Local embarrassment, in my books. I work downtown and walk either 15th, 16th, or 17th every day. Its sad when the most disgusting street in Denver is no longer Colfax, but an arterial line of commerce right through downtown. Thanks to 16th and the hordes of smelly riff raff that have made it their home, it doesnt feel like a fun place to shop in the heart of the Mile High City - its a place to hold your breath as you navigate the swarms of panhandlers of all types - amateur, professional, and guilt tripping charitable. Nevermind the constant construction or the lethally slick-when-wet stones theyve chosen to pave the mall with. Forget about the kitschy shops selling Best Dad in the World t-shirts and the incredible reek that always surrounds the Aveda salon and its filthy alley (all the alleys are now mandatorily closed due to our inability to deal with our homeless, spurred on by random acts of violence. I believe it was the pipe swinging maniac at the McDonalds / Narcotic Nexus that finally triggered the closure). The shops are nice. They were nicer when we had Barnes instead of Uniqlo or whatever that lookalike clothing store is, but thats just preference. Shoot, maybe not smelling multiple brands of human urine on the walk to work is also personal preference. Still doesnt mean 16th St gets 2 stars.

Its a sometimes crowded street littered with street art, food places, clothing stores, beggars, bums, vagrants, and everyone who works downtown. There are lots of folks who stand on the street asking for money. Recently the Denver PD went after the "scourge of crime" along the mall which seems to have helped. There are less people who look desperate, dirty, or downtrodden, holding what they believe to be creative signs/gimmicks to collect change. I dont know how much money is collected by folks who hold signs saying "NEED MONEY FOR WEED" but I can imagine Im not the only one who thinks its pretty stupid. I dont really mind any of that as much as I despise the person standing clipboard in hand, eyeballing me awkwardly from forty feet away until finally waving like someone whos never waved before and shouting, "HEY! HOW ARE YOU TODAY? DO YOU HAVE A MINUTE FOR [whatever]?" Those people suck. And theyre all over 16th St Mall. Otherwise Im on the mall pretty much daily for coffee, food, or just to take a short stroll during the workday.

Yesterday I was with a group of seniors from Wheat Ridge who planned to have lunch on the 16th Street Mall and tour the Money Museum after touring the State Capitol. Unfortunately, one of the vans broke down before we reached the Capitol and after the tour we had to walk to the mall. The group of about 20 people were separated. I was with two other ladies.and one had difficulty walking. After lunch we walked a few blocks on the mall and sat down to rest at an outdoor table at a coffee shop., There were empty tables, but a security guard was called by the coffee shop. We did not look like homeless people, but I am assuming there are no benches for that reason. It was a hot day in the high 80s. We could not find a bathroom, but finally went into the Sheraton Hotel where we were given a key to the restroom. We took the bus the rest of the way to the Money Museum. I will not be going back any time soon or taking any out of town guests to the mall as it was not friendly to senior citizens.

TL,DR: cool stuff found here, enjoy the culture of the Mile High City via 16th Street Mall. Lots of poke stops too. This is a travel mall stretching many city blocks. Put on your walking shoes and check out the heart of Denver from street level! There are lots of independent little shops like The Tattered Cover Bookstore and Marx Boutique; where you can find unique clothing and accessories. Also places like H&M and The Cheesecake Factory are along same street. Check out The Juice Kitchen on Curtis ST. for the BEST smoothies. There are also tons of street side vendors selling great food all along the mall. Standard big city transient population, plenty of cops and security around on every block. Not a big deal if you ask me & I work in a skyscraper right on the mall. Also.. Lots of Poke Stops can be found along and around the mall. More than 30 for sure! Aerodactlys spawn at the clock tower from time to time.

The 16th Street Mall is eclectic. During the day its a busy hub of business persons, homeless, and vendors. At night its homeless people and... Some young people. Homeless people are a problem as there is too much loitering. Police presence has been increased but it is still a place I avoid after dark if I am alone. There are a few good stores but many more run down stores including several tourist-traps. The free shuttle is a good way to get between Union Station (which is beautiful), to Civic Center (which at the time of this review is under construction). There has been talk about some sort of revitalization but IMO thats going to require some significant changes. Id recommend visiting Larimer Street, Union Station and seeing the mall during the daylight hours.

Quite a diverse crowd... Very sad that all the vagabonds, drifters, drug addicts, pan handlers, and vagrants have flocked to the mall. I am a Colorado native and remember the good old days of 16th street! Most the larger and well known anchor stores and restaurants have left, while unfortunately the smell of Pot has not! Still some great venders/shops to be found, but they are few and far between. Most of the real attractions have shifted further down to Lodo and around Union Station. After dark does not feel like a safe environment despite the police presence; I do not recommend if you have children. DISAPPOINTED that the city has allowed the eastern end of the mall to go downhill to its current state.

I had good time with a friend watching the Hawks and Ducks game 4 of the NHL Playoffs at Jimmys a Chicago sports place on Blake Street. Also, earlier went to the Mexican Restaurant next door. The Mall on 16th has some great places to shop and the Regal theater is great too. But after the street lights come on, more of the rift raft come out from the shadows. Yes the homeless come out, but also the gang members and thugs make their presence known. Unfortunately the Police night presence disappears, there is security during the day, but night time is the dangerous time. Its a fun area too bad the city does not use it more for festivals other than holidays. Lacking too is more hotels on the strip.

As a downtown resident, we often find ourselves on the 16th Street Mall to get from Point A to Point B. Our favorite area is the Pavilions as the move theater is convenient and has some nice restaurants. Visitors are sent to the "mall" as a "must see" for Denver. I do hope that those who visit make use of the convenient free mall bus and extend the visit to go just off of 16th Street to enjoy beautiful Larimer Square, Writers Square, Union Station, and Civic Center Park. Yes, Denver is a city and you will see people who are down on their luck; aka "homeless". I actually get more frustrated with the people wanting you to sign a petition at every corner!
