I have to be honest, I found David & Sons Fine Jewelers totally by accident. I was in the UTC mall for lunch and walked by one of their advertisements and I noticed it said they would beat any competitors prices, including the internet! Now if a local jewelry store can talk openly about matching the internet competition they have been facing in the past 10 years, they had my attention. But let me give you some background information before I tell about my experience at the store. I had been looking for a ring for around 3 months. I did my due diligence and learned as much as I could about diamond ratings, the different ratings agencies and the pricing of various settings from online sources. If I was going to spend a couple thousand dollars on a piece of jewelry, I needed to learn a few things first. After looking at a variety of online diamond retailers I singled in on BlueNile from recommendations from two fellow co-workers. From there I found out what my girlfriend liked from the settings available on BlueNile. That was the route I was going to go and was ready to make the purchase any day. I had consulted another local Jewelry store over near Whole Foods and they were nice but could not compete with BlueNile on the price for the diamond or setting. In addition, I gave the guy at that store an idea of what diamond I wanted and they said they would call me back after they checked some of their stores in orange county. Needless to say, there was no call so I wrote off local jewelers for the time being. Back to the real story, I decided to drop in on David and Sons that day in late October to check it out. I was immediately greeted by Fay and told her I had been looking for an engagement ring. She started showing me a variety of rings they had in the display cases and I gradually let on about the type of setting I had been looking at online. But before we started getting deeper I told her that it would be great to get a variety of stones out and compare them under magnification. I had done my research beforehand but handling individual stones is another matter. Stones that are rated the same can differ dramatically, especially based on the location and type of inclusions. From there I gave her my price range and started to get more serious about potentially making a purchase at this local store. Based on the previous settings Fay showed me, she decided to bring out a wax mold for a custom order they were currently working on. It turned out to be the exact type of pave setting I was looking for. I was dumbfounded. Here they already had a mold of the custom ring that fit exactly into my specifications, what luck! Then, we started looking at diamonds. Fay pulled out a beautiful one carat stone that I thought would be out of my price range, but of course it was not. The diamond price was incredibly reasonable and setting price they finally gave me was a real deal. Looks like I had just solved my dilemma of buying something online without seeing it first. I needed the ring in about 3 1/2 weeks and they finished it in exactly 3. Fay even called me in to take a look at the wax mold of the ring I ordered before it was cast since it was slightly different than the other custom order I had looked at. Now I have the finished ring in my possession and all I can say is wow; great people, great local shop, all in all a wonderful experience. You know they take great pride in what they do over there when they give you their personal cell phone number on their business card. I will be heading back there with my girlfriend after I propose to look at wedding bands. I highly recommend David & Sons Fine Jewelers to anybody in the market for fine jewelry!

I feel compelled to let anybody who is shopping for fine jewelry in the San Diego area know about the great experience I had at David and Sons. The bottom line up front is that you are not going to find a more dedicated, experienced and PROFESSIONAL group of jewelers in the area, period. Allow me to go into detail: I started my search for an engagement ring for my current fiance about 8 months ago. While I had decided that I wanted to keep the fact that I was seriously searching a surprise from her, I still wanted to get her direct input on what made a ring really sparkle for her; hence, we started dropping in to some local jewelry stores here and there whenever we it happened to be convenient. We hit up some of the large corporate stores - and, while there were some decent products on display in some of these stores, nothing really stood out to either of us. I really wanted to zero in on something truly unique as opposed to a more standard ring. With this in mind, we hit up some of the custom stores. Believe me guys out there, if you are thinking of popping the question and are willing to put the time, effort and perhaps a little bit more money into the ring, you will be happy should you take this route. Eventually, my personal focus turned to either David and Sons, or another custom jewelry store in the area. I have to honestly say that this competitor (no need to name the company), while showcasing some excellent jewelry, had an owner that really tried to play hardball with me in terms of pushing a sale. That was the end of that quandary as I - like many of you -dislike being pushed about an important decision, and I never encountered anything like this attitude from the salespeople at David and Sons! I worked with Sebastian from the conception of how the ring was going to work even beyond the delivery of the finished ring, to getting the fitting of it fine-tuned to my fiances ring finger. Sebastian made it fun and easy to get involved in the schematics of "building" the ring. Not being an experienced jeweler myself, some of the ideas I brought to the table were less than feasible; Sebastian had no problem outlining why some ideas would not work, but he never pushed me into a specific direction with regards to the overall design. In fact, when we finally drew up the details that would encompass the ring, I got a genuine sense that he and the others at David and Sons were really excited to work on this ring! The process for creating my fiances ring was not an overnight one, but it was worth it as my fiance is floored with how the ring looks and so am I. I am sold in terms of bringing all of my future personal jewelry business to David and Sons as I am positive that no where else in the region will I get a better experience and quality-level than at their facilities. We just got engaged about two weeks ago but already we are sure that well be hitting Sebastian up for the wedding band in the future as our plans advance towards the big day. Hats off to him and all the hard working folks over at David and Sons for knocking this one out of the park for us! - Mike

David & Sons was the last in a long string of jewelry stores that my fiancee and I visited in a lengthy quest for the perfect engagement ring. We did extensive research including substantial Internet searches and countless in-person visits to jewelry stores in both LA and San Diego. We settled on David & Sons for our extremely unique custom ring due to their excellent service, knowledgeable staff, and willingness to think outside of the box regarding custom work--even when it came to mixing in black diamonds in addition to white for our very unique design. Sebastian took phenomenal care of us and has been extremely helpful in every step of the process. We had both my fiancees wedding band and engagement ring custom made by David & Sons. We also ordered my wedding band from them. The service, as well as all three rings, ended up better than we could have imagined. I am an engineer, and I do my research regarding major purchases. I researched everything from the metal mixtures and different purities of white gold, yellow gold, rose gold, platinum, etc. to differences in care and maintenance of jewelry made from all of those different metals. I even thoroughly researched diamond prices, sizes, cuts, color, clarity, and other factors that go into the purchase of diamonds. Essentially every salesperson I encountered elsewhere had seemingly magical numbers for their jewelry costs that made no sense based upon the research I had conducted. Most jewelry stores even charge a hefty premium for Platinum as opposed to white or yellow gold far beyond the difference in the actual metal price. David & Sons was very different, however. Nowhere other than David & Sons could I find a salesperson who knew their material, and could explain the details of the costs involved in a way that actually made sense. They also did not charge a premium on the for platinum (which we ended up going with) as opposed to gold beyond the actual compartmentalized difference in the metal prices and purity. When I ran the calculation for the price I expected for their platinum custom ring job based upon their white gold quote, my calculated price matched their eventual quote almost exactly. Sebastian also found me an excellent center stone that was perfect for the ring we designed and sold it to me below the price of similar stones that I found online. Throughout the custom design and fabrication process, and on into the process of selecting my wedding band, David & Sons always treated us like valued customers and friends, even though we are probably younger than most patrons of the store. This respect was very much appreciated, and we will likely choose David & Sons whenever possible for future jewelry purchases. Once more, we were exceptionally pleased with the custom engagement ring and wedding band, the ordered wedding band, and the service we received throughout. All of our jewelry appraised well above what we paid for it. We would recommend David & Sons to anyone, especially those who like fantastic service and flexibility/independent thinking in their jewelry selection and design process.
