Good Earth gets 2 stars from me just for not being Whole Foods. Most Bay Area small towns lost their old health foods stores with the advent of the Whole Foods monopoly and its great to see this store hanging in there and so widely supported by locals. Good Earth gets additional stars from me for their organics and healthy basic groceries. Their produce section with its emphasis on the exact number of miles it takes to bring the produce to you should serve as a model for other stores (are you listening, Whole Foods?). The bulk section gets a big thumbs up, too. If you eat organically, are vegan/vegetarian or just natural-minded, you will find something to eat here, for sure. On the downside, the scene here isnt very appetizing. Fairfax is known for its alternative lifestyle component and thats great, but the truth is, some of the employees and many of the customers look dirty and ragged. If this is a lifestyle choice (rather than a condition of poverty), I have to say, its not appealing when associated with food. People have a right to live any way they want, but I feel that serving the public also carries a duty of respect and snarls and nose rings dont look like good hygiene. When youre dealing with food, cleanliness truly is important and I feel that some Good Earth employees arent taking that seriously and are more concerned about their style, whatever that may be. Nevertheless, you wont find a grocery store in the Bay Area that is doing more things right than Good Earth and we feel extremely fortunate to shop there.

I am from Vermont, thus a major foodie, so my review really counts. This is where I want to eat again and again when in the Bay Area (my daughter and granddaughter live in SF.) Food is exceptional, it is really fun to eat outside in the fresh air, and all the people who shop here look like we do in VT! We went crazy last visit and bought a slice of lemon cake from the deli on our way home, to share 4 ways. You can guess how that turned out. We actually doubled back to grab some more, and became deeply depressed because in the 2 hours we were gone, they sold out! So we got a chocolate variety. OMG. Heaven. Whether you believe in it or not. Worth the trip from Vermont. May go for the weekend. Kidding. But I almost would...

I was so disappointed to see that you had plastic bags for customers in your produce department. When I called you about this you said people were complaining about the BioBags that you use to have in your produce department. They were not keeping produce fresh. Really! I would have expected more of you given your reputation for all things "green" etc. Please return to the green BioBags with a notice telling customers that they dont keep produce fresh and that they should find appropriate refrigerator containers. As you know, the plastic in the oceans is killing our oceans, in more ways than one!!!!! Shame on you!

Good Earth feels like a community gathering place. Who wouldnt love that? The prepared food is very good, so is the variety, the fish is fresh, the house-made sausage superb. BUT, I keep writing notes to the management asking them to take the sugar out of the food they prepare and package (across from the hot foot vegetarian counter). Why would good earth use sugar in foods that are not intended to be sweet? I got a couple of email saying they were looking in to it. I looked in to it too, by once again reading the ingredient list, and what did I find? Sugar… Why? Anyone else care to comment on this?

one of my favorite places in the world... THE best salad / food bar i have found, bar none it is well thought out and well cared for. GE is a great community hangout as well as offering some of the best LOCAL organic produce, groceries, herbs, vitamins and supplements. i get a little nervous telling people how wonderful it is, its already so busy... im afraid i wont be able to find a place on the bench to sit down and enjoy my delicious lunch.

I swear this must secretly be a Whole Foods! The product selection (and higher prices) is very similar to WF, as is the food bar. Whenever Im in West Marin or passing through Fairfax, I always plan to stop in and raid the vegetarian food bar. They have the best kabocha squash stew ever. Seating in the patio is dog friendly and relaxing. Parkings not great but its downtown Fairfax!

These Goodearthlings are so helpful. I was searching all over town for pink beans and these people had it ordered in five minutes flat. Thats impressive by my measure. Thank you all so much for sharing your great experiences and dedication with us as patrons.

The large parking lot west of the store is easy to negotiate. The staff is friendly and helpful. High quality foods. You pay a premium ... its difficult to get out under $80 per bag. They also dont add new items to their shelves.

Great spot, wonderful selection and great bulk foods. Everything from fresh miso and Japanese seaweed to a great hot food area. Some selections are limited by their very very VERY strict policies for carrying products.

Great service, friendly staff, amazing produce, fair prices, and the place in West Marin to see all your friends -- if you dont like this store, youve either never been there or you work for Whole Foods (corporate).

Amazing selection of organic foods, including a wonderful vegan selection (all labeled). Great deli with a hot foods bar, sandwiches, pizza, salad, bowls, a taqueira, soups and more. Not crazy expensive either.

While obviously expensive due to its natural/organic bent this is still a great spot to pick up a quick bite or necessary groceries. Definitely check out their hot breakfast bar for delicious morning options!

There was a gluttonous pizza in the non gluttonous pizza zone. When I asked for help I was disregarded by a visibly stoned smelly hippy. 1/10 this whole foods store is horrible! Needs more diversity.

Fantastic selection of organic produce and other products. This is our go-to place for healthy food. The parking lot is a nightmare so do yourself a favor and park on the street.

Pricey, yet fair for the quality of hot/cold bar foods and organic groceries. Outdoor space is nice for eating and socializing alike.

Great independent natural foods store. Glad to know that a few still survive. This one does even better - it thrives!

Perfect stopping point for a cyclist that doesnt drink coffee, but will always do a popsicle in a 90° day.
