WARNING: RACIST STAFF - GUILTY BY RACIAL ASSOCIATION DISABILITIES: They will not accommodate you! Cursed out by staff for what others did!!! THIS BAR [illegally] SERVES DRUNKS I went in, waited 10 minutes at the bar, and ordered a $5 appetizer. The bartender split, didnt hear the 2nd half of my order because he was already at the other side of the bar hitting on a hot blond chick; where he had been the whole time he ignored me. It was, in fact, the only place his mind was at. My appetizer came at 25 minutes via kitchen staff. I was "able" to order a beer at 30 minutes. It took about 10 minutes for the bartender to pour the beer; he didnt start for about 5 minutes. At 45 minutes, I had my beer and a nice cold appetizer that was presented to me hot 20 minutes before. Two drunks came in. They were each provided [illegal] service. They bought $9 of alcohol. I should mention [now] that they were Native American. As am I, though it only comes up in instances of racism such as this. So they get their bill and Im trying to order another side and beer... and my beer is on their bill. My beer was on THEIR bill. My appetizer??? Wasnt on THEIR bill. So what happened to it? I couldve walked out on my bill then. ...but Ive got more integrity than your entire staff that night... As of this moment - GUILT BY ASSOCIATION was in full swing. It was not easy convincing them we were not together. They did not want to divide the bill up for us. The bartender split, and only after the drunk woman got in an argument with kitchen staff did someone get him. We finally got the bills separate, but they wouldnt believe that we werent a family. US NATIVES ALL LOOK ALIKE it seems. So they pay, try to order two more drinks. Turns out the bartender cut us all off together. Lumped us together by Race - and denied service because of it. They ordered two drinks, he said hed get them - he did not. They tried ordering one shortly after, he said hed get it - he did not. They got pissed and I had to de-escalate what was priming to be a physical altercation with two drunks this place shouldnt have served to begin with. Some guy sits next to us. Asks how Im doing. I said, "Not bad but you might want to move down the bar. Service right here, feel like Im being ignored." The guy CURSED ME OUT... well, "us" out. Said, "LEAVE! F-ing leave, you dont have to be here. Cant get a clue that youre cut off after an hour of No-Service? Pack your s--t and leave! GO!" Turns out he works for them... wasnt conversation he was after. I figured out then what situation this was. Racism. Discrimination. I asked to see my accuser, the two drunks left of their own accord. My accuser, the bartender, said the following: "You didnt insult me. You let two homeless vagrants come in off the street and sit next to you, and YOU dont move - you can expect guilt by association, to be cut-off, and kicked out." As word-for-word as I can get it. The member of the kitchen staff who got him for me chimed in: HOMELESS TRASH. Im a disabled Veteran. I have a beard. So if I dont move - Im homeless trash. They even said the lady was MY mom. ...wouldnt take no for an answer... I have never before been so mistreated for being a Native American, though I have been for not being "Native Enough" - so this was backward and heartbreaking for me all at the same time. Based on my long hair (growing for charity, Im a cancer survivor - my grandma died of it) and my Veteran "Operator" beard I was called Homeless Trash. Ive never before been accused of being family with someone just because of race, and kicked out for it. I am probably going to contact the ACLU about this. You may see me across the street with a sign to protest the racism there. I live nearby... and for 3 years, this was my go-to pub. What they did to me and two others tonight was inexcusable.

Today I was hoping to get a hearty comfort meal. Instead, I had to walk back to my office empty-handed and empty-bellied. I had walked past the restaurant on Mill about a week ago. Since Id tried the food in Scottsdale before, I thought it would make a great meal for lunch -- especially since extenuating circumstances prevented me from getting breakfast or making a packed lunch this morning. So, I looked up their menu on the website, looked up the only location in Tempe, and called in the order. They said itd be ready in 15 minutes. So I put on my hat, walk the long distance from my office, and step inside. I catch the eye of the worker and pull my credit card out of my wallet, expecting this to be easy. But that couldnt have been farther from the reality. The order wasnt there. The worker said they never got any phone call. They asked which number I called, and I read it off to them from the "Recent Calls" on my cell phone. I was then informed that the order mustve gone to their "other" Tempe location. There is only one Tempe location online. So I asked how long it would take to make me the one that I had been waiting on, and was informed that it would take up the only time remaining on my lunch break. I had enough time to eat (Im usually capable of finishing a meal in about 10 minutes) but no hope of having enough time to wait for the preparation. To make matters worse, they informed me there that they dont have everything that their online menu says they do. There is no indicator anywhere on their website or their online menu that a separate menu exists for any of their locations. So I walked back to my office in the heat, tearing up and trying very hard not to publicly cry, trying to figure out how to get through the rest of my workday on a completely empty stomach. I was not prepared to fast, and my job demands a sharp mind. Luckily, I was rescued from Cornish Pastys ineptitude by a box of Lunchables from the Sun Devil Marketplace. If an establishment screws me over when it hurts me the most, they dont deserve my time or money at those times when I have more time and money. I take back anything good I ever said about the chain, and will be telling my friends and family about my experience. It doesnt matter how tasty the food is if youre never able to eat it.

The decor in this place is dark, warm and comfortable, which suits the food and drink excellently; the place has expanded since it first opened, buying the space next door and knocking out the walls. The original tiny location is still the main entrance point, with the kitchen and bar now located right in the middle of the establishment. The layouts a little confusing until youve been here a few times, but theres nothing confusing about the food— its excellent. Ill just read off the stuff on the menu that Ive tried and liked: Under "Signature Pasties", theres the Oggie (steak/potato/onion/rutabaga), the Bangers and Mash, the Meat and Cheese (sausage, Cheddar, and Swiss), the Shepherds Pie, and the Chicken Alfredo (with potatoes instead of pasta). Under "Premium Pasties", theres the Chicken Tikka Masala and the Pesto Chicken. As for the soups, I recommend the cream of leek, potato and Stilton -- it goes remarkably well with most of the entrees, and served with fresh bread and butter its almost good enough to make a meal on its own. The sides include authentic English-style chips— with optional garlic or jalapeño— and theres a wide selection of desserts, all of which are worth saving room for. Theres a similarly wide selection of beers and other beverages, including Guinness AND Strongbow Cider on draft. And all of this is available at a price that wont drain the life out of your bank account. Just to sum up my opinion of the place, I can safely say that I have NEVER had a bad dining experience at the Cornish Pasty Co. The service is always great, the food and drink are always great, and the prices are pretty damned good as well.
