I made a major purchase of a bike this year. It was ordered online and assembled within a couple of weeks. Everything was going perfect until I came in for the 100 miles warranty tune up after the initial break in period. The tune up was free, so it was desirable for me to come in. First off, I had to leave my bike there for a week due to the waiting line was long and there is only 1 or 2 service techs on staff during the day. Second, on my first ride after the tune up, the front derailer twisted sideways and the chain dropped off! I had to ride home the final 4 miles in first gear because if I changed into any other gear the chain would rub. When I brought it back in they made the adjustment on the spot free of cost and everything was hunky dory. However, on my next ride out of the shop, the middle gears on the rear derailer started changing by themselves every time I went over a bump or pushed hard on the pedals. Granted I paid nothing for the service, but I will be unlikely to pay them for the next tune up. That being said the member benefits are great, even though many of the clothes are severely over priced.

My first REI experience was in San Diego, my second was here. Had a 50/50 employee experience in Brookfield. One was so helpful I felt bad about bugging him. But I did for multiple products. Another *was* very helpful but ended up ordering the wrong color pants. Out of dozens of REI purchases over the years, that was small potatoes. Especially given their returns policy. Bar none, its the best Ive ever seen and used in my half-century as a shopper. Their selection is incredible and prices are great. Especially given the very high quality of house goods and mainstream products. Google and compare for yourself. Dont know about the bike-boys negative experiences below but in other areas these people are worth talking to. BTW, I neither work for nor know any employees of REI.

REI stopped selling scratch and dent items so they could have a Garage Sale a couple times a year. I went to the garage sale and everyone who made it into the store before me (and i showed up 20 minutes early and waited outside) grabbed everything they could and hoarded it in corners to then sort through it themselves. By the time i got to the three areas there was hardly anything left, yet people in front of me had five jackets, ten pairs of gloves and three pairs of shoes... Just open up the scratch and dent area again for normal shoppers & members, not black friday crazed hoarders.

I am a mature female that has had my self and two ( now Adult ) children as members for the last 20 years. I am now purchasing items for two very young grand children I am also well educated and a frequent traveler to many Asian countries. Today i received a survey from REI about travel. I started to fill it out but when I had to put my age in; the survey abruptly disconnected and rudely said thanks but we dont need your input. WOW! I feel this is very wrong!! I buy Patagonia so will use the patagonia web site! Thanks REI

I love this store! Contrary to other reviews, I have found employees to be helpful, and if they dont know something they will find someone that does. They arent a specialty shop, they are an all around outdoors shop. If you have an involved technical question, go to your local bike shop instead. They also do a lot for the community like trail building and river cleanup and offer clinics on all types of sports. This is a great store and I love shopping here!

We backpack in the Himalaya every year for a month, and I have gotten much of my needed equipment at REI. They have knowledgeable staff and good products. I am most impressed with a return policy and service. Twice this week I have had to return things, one defective (no problem at all), and one an ill-fitting gift without receipt. I still got an exchange Large for Medium with no cost or hassle. Wow. Who does that?

Stopped in today to look at Kayaks. There were 5 employees in the busy store - 3 cashiers tending to a long line of people checking out, one guy in the back fixing bikes, and one lonely sales person on the floor, deep in discussions with another customer about backpacks. I was in the store 20 minutes without any possibility of help. Went down the street and got great attention at another outfitter.

I am a big REI fan. The gear selection is pretty good, but the return policy is what makes the difference for me. Of course you will pay a premium for things that you can return for whatever reason at any time, but the assurance is worth it in most cases. I cant speak to the staff because I do my own research and do not really solicit their opinions when I am shopping. Overall, great company.

Ive probably spent a couple thousand dollars at this REI, and tonight when I had asked for help to purchase a new diamondback mountain bike before I moved out West, I asked for help 3 different times and I either got blown off or told someone would be over in a few minutes. Waited over a half hour for help and decided to go else where for a bike. Usually theyve been good but oh well.

Well, this was my first time to REI so I didnt know where anything was. No one asked if I needed help even tho I passed 3 associates. I found what I was looking for then tried to find the fitting rooms. They should be labeled better. Also, the door is broke on one of them. Nice. So I ended up going to the REI in Madison and had a MUCH better experience and larger selection.

Good product but customer service is lacking. We all have our bad days but everybodys bad day shouldnt be on the same day. Asked if there are any fleece vests - was told We havent sold fleece vests in years. (Youre currently wearing a vest...) Checkout clerk refused to honor a coupon that stated it could be used in store and online.

I buy a great deal of REI branded clothing and equipment and I always get a lot for my money. Getting help from the employees is hit or miss: a few of them are experts and others know less about the merchandise than I do. Still, I have not found a better place in metro Milwaukee to buy high-quality outdoor gear at fair prices.

Bike service is terrible. Brought bike in for tune up and it was returned with a rubbing chain and brake pad. When I returned to complain this was blamed on worn components. hmmm, but I wasnt having any issues before bringing the bike in. Thanks REI for taking my money making my bike worse than before I brought it in.

I didnt come here expecting much. But the bike service was fantastic. Basically he told me not to buy a bike here. They have a few good ones... but Id look elsewhere unless youre looking for a good touring bike. REI makes one. They have some good sales but by and large they sell overpriced mediocre bikes.
