I recently discovered Cargo Hold, and in the process, a pipesman of noteworthy character. Doug, the owner there, has an extensive knowledge of pipes and tobaccos, and after only three visits, has become my favorite tobacconist. His store is well-stocked with most anything a pipe smoker might need, and I would never hesitate to order anything he didnt have in stock, knowing full well that if he recommended it, it would be worth the wait. He is knowledgeable, helpful, and a wonderful man with whom to have a few minutes of conversation. Unlike so many tobacco store owners these days, he has genuine knowledge of pipe smoking from the ground up. If youve never smoked a pipe before, but are considering it, I highly recommend a visit to Cargo Hold, and a chat with Doug. He will happily provide you with such details, information and techniques to make your first pipe a truly memorable experience. I only wish I had purchased my first pipe from someone so invested in keeping the tradition of pipe smoking enjoyable! I look forward to many more visits to Cargo Hold in the future.

I was, at first, excited to go in with my husband and see the selection of pipes, as my husband has been searching for the right one for a couple of years now. But when I said to my husband, "Look! Lunting paraphernalia!" (which is kind of an inside joke for my husband and I), the man behind the counter overheard me and said in an incredibly nasty tone, "Well thats a sign of the times! Theyre called PIPES!!" I guess he did not know that "lunting" means to smoke a pipe, or that he could not see "paraphernalia" as a perfectly valid word for its equipment/accessories, but he was so horrible I was completely taken aback and just quietly left the store, which was clearly what he wanted me to do.

Saw the negative comment below from 2 years ago and thought that I should also give a review more current. I traveled up to the NW to visit a friend in January 2016 and he brought me to this little town and we stumbled across this place. The store was great, the people were very nice and very knowledgable. I am new to pipes and he explained what to look for and what to try, he didnt try selling me the most expensive pipe and let me have some sample tobacco. The nautical supplies in the store were great and he had a good selection of things to browse.

Cool shop and nice owner. He helped me out with a loose safety blade after tsa took mine. We ended up finding souvenirs for the kids and enjoyed browsing the interesting nautical items. Will need to visit again.

Both guys that run this place are great, the younger one has more patience (of course) than the older guy, but both are very knowledgeable/helpful and ultimately pleasant to deal with.

Exceptional, welcoming service, and the variety of explorer-themed man gadgets is impressive. Also boasts the best selection of fine cigars and pipe tobaccos on the island.

Very cool nautical pieces. Found an awesome brass sign that says "welcome aboard" that is now on my front door!

This is the best place to buy a pipe and pipe tobacco.
