I recently purchased an awesome, swanky, "fancy-donkey" (I would say "fancy-ASS," but thats vulgar...which is why I choose to use the suffix "-donkey" in lieu of "ass") 300 dollar folding knife of very premium steel. I felt that -out of the box- the knife was merely adequately-sharp but not razor-sharp -which is how I expect new knives to be, especially expensive knives. About a week ago I brought my knife in to Hawthorne Cutlery to see if they would sharpen my new knife. They indicated to me they would sharpen it and told me to come back later that day to pick the knife up. When I returned later that day, however, they told me that the knife was ALREADY razor sharp...hence they had no ability or desire to try and make the knife any sharper than it already was. I was a little disappointed and irked because I felt like the knife...somehow wasnt as sharp as it could and should be. A couple days ago I attempted to get a second opinion by bringing my knife into the Portland Knife House. The sharpener from this store took a look at it and immediately felt that the knife could be somewhat sharper. Mind you, the knife has a premium steel and is recurved which means sharpening my knife is UBER-difficult anyways -it would take an expert to do so. I very recently returned to Portland Knife House and picked up the knife. They did sharpen it and did an absolutely professional AWESOME job. Obviously they have a keener eye and are more legit than Hawthorne Cutlery -given that they felt the knife could be sharper and did an impeccable and immaculate job on it.

Due to short supply of knife stores in the area as of late, we stumbled across this place. Drove across town to view their selection of Spydercos. Not a huge selection, but we found something absolutely perfect in their stock. Spent more than we would have liked, but I cannot tell you how happy I am with this Spyderco "Dice" model. Perfect size, 3 efficient ways to deploy the blade. On top of that, we got an excellent deal on it, despite it being more than we had planned to spend. The gentleman helping us didnt pressure us, nor was he otherwise pushy or eager for a sale. He knew I wanted this knife, and he negotiated the price for me so that it was feasible for us. After getting home, we researched this particular model and found that it retails for over $300 on the Spyderco site! We paid a good $50 less. Thank you Hawthorne Cutlery. If you ever get some "Domino" models in, my husband would love one of those! :) Will definitely return. Apparently they have excellent knife sharpening services at $5, regardless of size. Cant beat that.

David has the inside scoop and knowledge to bring me back here every time I am in town. When I show up and list my likes and dislikes for a tactical folder (reversible clip, assisted/non-assisted, handle type, blade length, concealment, and USA made) I dont need to see some 15 year old, acne fighting kid from the burbs staring blankly back at me without a clue and launching into a poorly rehearsed, stammering narrative about his vast experience with edged weapons. I give a laundry list of requirements to Dave and in thirty seconds Im looking at the precise knife that I walked out with. Thank you, Sir. See you next trip!

I came to this shop 2 X-mas ago and picked out some awesome Lamson Sharp (sp?) knives for my husband and I to gift each other. It was a great experience and I have hardly had to sharpen my knives, which I use a lot. I LOVE the owners review of the yayhoo that gave him a crappy review for not being open when they thought they would be. My husband and I will be heading down tomorrow with his 14 year-old grandson in tow who is visiting from Texarkana, TX and he has a total knife fettish!! Ill call to make sure that you all will be open at 11 like the site says!

Well Im on my way there now for the first time. Gave your shop 5 Stars because of your responses to the reviews. Im really impressed that you wont do something for an extra buck. Like sharpening a all ready sharp knife. That and love your responses to the low starred reviews lol. Come on a one star for not being open when you should have called to find out if the store is open. Your a shop that I all ready know I will be doing business with before making my first purchase.

One shouldnt expect friendly customer service or non-opinionated staff from a knife shop, and Hawthorne Cutlery is no exception. What they do have is a great selection of new and used blades from safety razors to swords, and a very skilled knife sharpener who will charge $5 per blade for a good edge. I bought a big survival knife from these guys and have had my kitchen equipment sharpened by them several times.

This place is awesome. The owner is a super cool cat and very knowledgeable and helpful. Easy place to spend a lot of money on a lot of cool things. Prices are very fair too, I bought a great set of Wusthof steak knives. This is the only local store that carried them and for the same discounted price as Amazon, Macys, and Sears. I will unquestionably be back!

Dont let the different items in stock deter you from purchasing knives from this business. Not only did I purchase a kitchen knife to replace one that had fallen apart, I received a 10 minute lesson on how to properly sharpen knives. Something you wont get at the big box stores. Im going back before Thanksgiving to obtain another larger carving knife.

David is an exceptionally knowledgeable business owner knows the answers to your questions and takes the time to give them to you. Hes also an awesome guy to talk with on a variety of subjects. A true individual. I never worry about scraping bits off my cutting board with my kitchen knife, cuz I know I can get it SHARP down on Hawthorne anytime.
