Bad, then good. I wrote the below post 3 months ago. Decided to give them one more shot recently when a cable snapped and it was stuck in my 105 shifter. Ken hooked me up and fixed it all. I am happy now with these guys. It seems that they have tightened things up in the shop and Id go back. My before post, not as applicable now: I purchased a CAADX cyclo bike here and with the buy, I got a free tune up. No problems with the bike, but the bike shop did a horrible "tune up" when I took it in about four months after having it. The bike had no problems when I took it in. Not the story when I picked it up. The shop tightened the brakes so much that they were dragging (front and back), and they improperly adjusted the front derailleur so that it was rubbing. I had to fix everything they did myself. They wouldnt even fix the tape on the handlebars that was sliding off, and wanted me to buy new tape (even though it was likely due to the way they first installed the tape that it was sliding). I took the bike home and re-rolled the tape myself. Not impressed...do not get your bike serviced at this REI.

Im not even going to give a rating to this store due to its unbelievably poor management of its scratch and dent sale. Despite spending 30 dollars on cab-fare and the metro, spending the night at a friends house, and borrowing a car to wait in line at 6:50 AM, other customers thought it was fine to show up at 9:00 and cut close to 75 people in line. The fact that you dont use a ticket system to manage the event, yet alone check if these people are even members, infuriates 12 year members like me. I have spent thousands of dollars at REI and referred a ridiculous amount of customers to get memberships only to have the jerks ahead of me run into the sale and grab EVERY SINGLE BACKPACK (9) and sit outside the doors of the sale and rifle through their hoarding pile. I am beyond disappointed, especially when the "supervisor" I talked to simply told me sorry and to fill out a customer service card. Shame on you REI, shame on you.

Kudos to the bike shop (technician JKS) for their recent pack-and-ship of our bikes after we completed the GAP+C&O canal ride. The bikes were packed extremely well - better than I would have done myself - in well-engineered, heavy cardboard containers. The containers arrived undamaged (rare in my experience - we saved them for future use), and the bikes seem to be no worse for the trip. The only negative was that the bike shop had about a week backlog of work, so it took about 2 weeks for our bikes to make it home to Austin after dropping them off. Those with more flexibility may want to call other area stores to check on their backlogs. Overall this was a very positive experience: The total cost (pack + ship) is roughly what airlines currently charge, but the bike carrier and shipping quality are much superior, albeit with non-immediate delivery.

During one of our frequent visits to this location, my husband and I, who are REI members as well, were ready to shop for a mountain bike. In short, we were basically brushed off by one of the bike department staff and sent out to look for a bike on our own. He said he would follow up on us but he never did. We felt we were ready to spend at least 400 dollars that day and actually found a bike on our own which was on the display floor. Unfortunately, due to the type of service we received, we were negatively affected to the point that we decided to take our business elsewhere. We bought a nice FUJI mountain bike from Hudson Trail for a reasonable price and to top it off we received the attention and advice we were in need of from the very beginning. We will be shopping at a different REI location from now on.

We received 2 folding chairs as a House Warming Gift when we re-located to Arlington Va. Several weeks later when we attempted to use them, they proved much too heavy for us to handle I lugged them back to the store and the Manager flatly refused to exchange them. I had no sales check simply because I did not purchase then. Certainly I was not about to call our friends to ascertain who gave them to us. He as much as accused us as stealing them and kept reciting the company line. We owned 400 hundred restaurants and I dare say I could easily afford to purchase them. I am 86 years old and they are quite heavy.

REI is a great store to begin with, and this location is the DC location to get all your outdoor gear. The staff is friendly and helpful but unfortunately you can still run into those who may not know enough about a product and will need to refer you to their boss to assist. Regardless the store was decently sized and offered a great selection of items to get you rolling for you local great falls adventures

Decent selection of a wide-range of outdoor activity gear. Im only knocking it down a few stars because during my entire ~1hr in the store, no one ever asked if I needed help (I did). When I finally found an employee to help me find a pair of pants in a different size, he never appeared again. Still a great store, but these kind of experiences make me want to do more online shopping.

Matt spent about an hour with us getting our proper sized 70 L backpacks. Thanks for all the help. Incidentally we ended up spending $550 because of the help finding what we needed. Sometimes we walk in stores, dont find something, and walk right out. Thanks for the good service. We wanted to spend the money today! We needed the stuff I now feel confident that we got the right thing

One of the employees spent over an hour with me as I asked him questions about hammocks, ultralight tents, packs, and more. He was a wealth of information, and talked to me about upcoming classes to learn more. Great to get awesome, professional insight on big purchases from someone in person rather than having to pour over online reviews.

So, I walked in here all the way confused. I had to get my teenage son hiking gear for a trip he is taking to Ecuador this month. I have never been hiking and neither had he. Austin found and rescued me! He was knowledgeable and patient. I still think that shopping for mens clothing is way more complicated but, I digress.

This particular REI always seems to be stocked really well. Anytime I do a check on what stores have an item in stock, Falls Church pops up, probably 8/10 times. The only drawback about this place is the terrible parking lot thats hard to get in and out of and sometimes has you parking on a really extreme grade.

This is usually my go-to store instead of Tysons or College Park. I was looking for snowshoes but the store did not have any. I asked the person on the phone if he could check availability in another stores and he told me that he couldnt but I could. That to me IS NOT customer service.
