PORNOGRAPHY BEING SOLD AT BARNES AND NOBLE! Having written Barnes & Noble two months ago and never hearing back, I sent a note via Twitter on July 13th. The only reply I have ever received was one correcting where I posted and someone to whom I should write. I did so, To date? No reply. To: Carolyn Brown, Director of Communications, William Lynch, President, Barnes and Noble From: A concerned long time customer Date: May 13, 2012 Good afternoon, As a long time customer, I am writing to express deep concern and frankly outrage over a recent visit to your Sugar House, Utah, location. Buying mothers cards for my wife, I was shocked and appalled to look up and see adult magazines being sold behind the checkout! I have never seen smut in a B&N store before. I cannot adequately convey my reaction and waited three days to write as I needed time to temper my remarks. Seeing these magazines cheapened and tarnished what has been a positive brand. One expects to see this in any place but B&N: a convenience store, adult book store or lingerie/movie/gift store, etc. -- but not at Barnes and Noble!! Not not in a venue that has children coming into the reading area upstairs, not with a store that contains "Noble" in its name. Sadly, this was ignoble. Will these magazines be just in your Sugar House area due to its more cosmopolitan non-conservative demographic? Or will this be chain wide? What else can buyers expect in the future to see and buy at B&N? Not just as a professional who taught marketing in another highly-visible arena but more as a citizen, father and grandfather, I urge you to re-think this affiliate marketing not for another revenue line but rather as tawdry and dirty way to make another sale at the checkout. This cheapens and weakens what took years to build as a respectable brand. Consider what would happen if a really angry consumer put this out as a PSA via SMM? Consider also the positive power of SMM. Can B&N really afford to consider this course of action?! Does B&N want to add its name to the multiple billion dollar pornography/obscenity industry? Like driving the getaway car, B&N becomes an accomplice by offering what others sell. Is that the image you want for your noble firm? What percentage of your clientele will buy smut? Are you willing to lose the other percent? For what this is worth, I am not of the prevailing religion here in Utah, yet I know many of many faiths and frankly many un-churched consumers who would also be offended and no longer be a consumer. I sincerely hope you will take my tempered remarks to heart and reconsider your policy. Respectfully submitted, JF PS -- I apologize for any typos and trust my tone results not just in a reply but also leads to change.

While this is a large location the pushy nooky as you walk in the door should be a clear sign to you that you have entered the realm of “We want your money honey.” The book selection is middle of the road to poor and the service is atrocious. When I asked where accounting was I was sent to “economics?” by a dazed befuddled worker bee. Back at the café you can expect sour behavior, coffee that is barely palatable and food that just might possibly send you to the bathroom all night followed by “Would you like a cookie with that?” Oh BTW your Starbuck’s card won’t work either despite the green signs plastered everywhere. If you ever did think of plugging in your computer you can forget that too- plugs are absolutely not to be found. Want to look through the magazines? Well there is a very hard bench. You can use the restroom but only if you can stomach the female napkin odor. Upstairs at one time in the distant past there were chairs- well chairs don’t sell anything so those were moved out and now you can stand thank you very much. The icing on the cake is that you won’t find local authors signing books here or promoted in any way. B&N seems to have completely forgotten the fact that people aren’t just mindless cattle that can be sold and herded- especially book people. The Public Library just steps away is far more appealing, the staff is pleasant and the materials are free.

The Starbucks here didnt pay attention to my order, and didnt even write it on the cup. I asked for a Venti White Choc Mocha at 140°F (just a bit warmer than kids temp)... Something I order very frequently just at locations in California. They decided to make the milk piping hot; which burned my tongue. I took it back up, actually apologized and asked if they could please remake it because its extremely hot and I waited 5 minutes with the lid off hoping it would cool, but I really just need to drink it and get going... The associate goes "Then you want it lower than 140, cause I steamed it and it was at 140." ...Im sorry but 140° is not going to be hot enough to feel outside of the cardboard sleeve. So I call bullshit. Also why would she look at the side of the cup and go "It isnt written on the cup" if she knew she made it correctly?

This location is huge (the only one Ive been to with two floors)! Its also very pretty. I had a lot of fun exploring the aisles and looking at books the old fashioned way. The employees were also nice. Unfortunately Barnes & Noble is overpriced when you compare most in store prices to ones on Amazon. Theyre pushing this subscription service to save a lot more money when shopping with them but overall I still think youd lose money. However, this is a great place to get a book immediately if you dont want to wait for shipping. I gave 5 stars because being overpriced is a thing at every Barnes & Noble and most people already know that anyways so my rating is for this location itself. If I were to rate Barnes & Noble as a whole, Id give them 3 stars.

I grew up going to Barnes and Nobles to hang out. There was one right by the mall of the town I grew up in and it seemed like what everyone would do on the weekends was either hang out at the mall, or hang out at Barnes and Nobles cafe and the bookstore. I didnt mind this as I have always been a huge book worn so even if I am only hanging around books and not reading them, I am still happy because they are close by. This location is huge! Two stories with the cafe on the first floor and lots and lots of books. It is somewhat a part of Sugarhouse Shopping Center and then is also seen if you are going up or down 2100th or 1100th.

Online it says their hours are till 9pm on Sunday I walked in at 8 on the dot for a nook tablet on mothers day and was told they were closed and to get out. When I told th e guy I just wanted the nook tablet, the most expensive item in the store, and I drove 150 miles for it he said I could just buy that. When they were getting it out for me I was looking at the cases and he handed it to me told me go check out that he was setting the alarms. I felt very put out spending so much money on something and being treated so awful. Ive never had a problem at any other b&n but I will never be returning to that location.
