I got food poisoning at Barbur on Tues, Aug 15 2017. Didnt eat any breakfast or anything afterwards. I ordered baba ganoush, kale salad, and greek salad. Took the order back to my office to eat it. Felt sick around 2pm and had to go home at 3pm. Around six pm, I tried to call to tell the deli to pull those items. I had to call three times, letting the phone ring forever, to get anyone to pick up. The first girl hung up on me, possibly by accident. It sounded to me like the place was way understaffed by her frantic tone. I had to let my phone ring for two more times, for about 3-4 minutes each time. Finally, a second clerk answered on the third attempt. He was a deep voiced middle eastern sounding man. I told him my story. He said, "Wait," and put me on hold for a few more minutes. Finally, an effeminately emotionless male clerk came on the line. He was passive-aggressively rude, read me some government policy for food-borne illness, and then gave me the brush off, in a spiteful way. At the time, I was lying on my back, in bed, cradling my aching stomach. I had just vomited for the second time on my knees in my bathroom. Let me tell you, I will NEVER eat at Barbur Foods again. ---- Update: Diarrhea all day today (third day after). Kidney pain. Went to the doctor at Kaiser. She said it is definitely food poisoning. Did a bunch of blood and urine tests. It is a very bad case of food poisoning. I am so upset that Barbur did this to me. Extremely unfair and unprofessional. I trusted the business with my life. Obviously, I was wrong. I am still very sick. I have no history of any problems with my kidneys and no prior illnesses or health conditions that would cause such a thing. It is very bad food poisoning from the deli.

I love this market! Its conveniently located right next to the pharmacy and my awesome veterinarian (and the liquor store too, if you really want to make a day of it ;) so I go there often. The deli has been deservedly praised -- they have the best takeout deli of anywhere Ive been in PDX and they have truly addictive mjedra and mashed potatoes like magical butter fluffery. Butt favorite thing is wandering the aisles when Ive got half an hour to spare and discovering things that I dont recognize -- rose petal jam, endless packs stuffed with dry cured olives of various flavor intensities, sodas both locally made and exotic, brand new and anachronisms I recognize from my fathers childhood, not mine. This so going to sound cheesy, but I feel like BWF isnt just a grocery store -- its more like a fantasy vacation in the World Tour Wayback machine! And Im at the vet with half an hour to wait -- I think Ill just dial up a random place and time and teleport over there -- Beam me up, Attar-y!

This isnt just a grocery store, it has wonderful home made gourmet prepared foods that put the big chains to shame with the quality and reasonable prices for restaurant grade yummies available at the deli counter to take out or eat at a cafe table. Add to that great service, staff that are actually trained and knowledgeable, and well chosen generous selection of fresh (organic and not) fruits, veggies, meats, imported spices, wine, beer, and other staples plus interesting fun foodie items in a modest space and youve got the kind of place I drive across town to when I have a craving for fresh made pita, pizza, salads, entrees, pastries...

This international market, with a specialty in Middle Eastern foods, is one of my favorite places to shop in Portland. The falafel sandwich is rolled in the fresh baked pita with lettuce, tomato, and tahini sauce. Middle Eastern comfort food at its best. The only reason I gave this market 4 stars is the prices, some of the products are overpriced!! I came from Middle East, and I know almost every products they have, and seriously, they are overpriced. But nothing stops me from buying their food, especially the shawarma and the pita bread!!

This review is for the one in the Pearl District! It looks so much better now that it is a regular grocery store in this location. The food smells fantastic inside and the lunch time choices gives me a much better variety than the Whole Foods nearby. Probably my only comment is that the aisles seem a little cramped when there are so many people around, but that isnt necessarily a bad thing. I highly recommend taking the time to stop in during lunch and visiting their deli and coffee area.

Im conflicted about this store. The prepared food is so beyond great, and the selection of hidden wonders you can find is amazing. However, while most of the staff is helpful and sweet, some of the staffs behavior is ABSOLUTELY unacceptable. In one instance I was asked if I needed any help and in the middle of my sentence the employee just walk away from me and go talk to another associate. Its not the end of the world, but Im not exactly itching to go back and deal with sub par attitudes.

Something has happened to the prepared foods at this location. Im always telling people about this hidden gem. However today I went in to grab lunch and was flabbergasted. I ordered the shawarma bowl and the meat was cold and dry, my "bowl" had about a pound of rice, about 2 pickled vegetables, and the tahini tasted like flavorless glue! The only good thing in this bowl was the feta, which I doubt the kitchen made. What happened?!

Great produce; great meats and seafood; great selection of mid east and east Asian spices and foods; great beer and wine selection; hookahs and accessories; great hot/cold food counter. They have a little bit of a lot of different things from around the world--more than I could easily list here. Theyre the only place I can reliably find many items. Its best of you just go see for yourself!

This place is amazing. It has a lot of food people are used too and it has a good selection of food from around the world. Their cheese area is insane. Pretty much has any cheese you could want. The deli is also amazing food. Although I did get a lentil rice dish there and it didnt have much flavor. The meat dolmas were on point though as was their roast.

This grocery store, albeit with a great location, is in high need of a total remodel. The floors look dirty, and the layout is not ideal. I really only come here if im in a hurry. Where they excel is in their local feel and abundance of specialty items. Looking for something unique? No doubt simply asking for it will bring it on the store shelves.

Use a basket for shopping, or youll end up buying more than you intended to! Nice selection of frozen meats, including goat and rabbit. Wonderful deli, lamb stew is flavorful and tender. Fresh bread baked there, so good youve got to reserve a loaf in advance. Plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables. Lots of middle eastern favorites on each isle.

Love this local grocery store. Has a lot of stuff you cant get anywhere else. Just made a special trip there for pomegranate molasses after unsuccessful trips to other grocery stores, and, sure enough, they had it! They always give good cheese recommendations and are quite friendly if you have any questions. 10/10 would recommend
