My husband and I just began mentoring a refugee family from the Congo through a local non profit in the North Hill area of Akron OH. North Hill is home to a large refugee community which recently as of last year has seen an influx of refugee families from the Congo. To be considered a refugee one must have fled their country of origin due to war and persecution. The things these families have faced is something most Americans will never understand. They land in the United States after fleeing their country, living years in a refugee camp, waiting 2 years after their application for relocation to another country with only the clothing on their backs. And they are the lucky ones as less than 1% of refugees ever make it out of refugee camps. They know no one, they do not speak the language, most of them have never had electricity, running water, paid a bill, rented an apartment, received mail, opened a bank account or in this case purchased furniture. So you can imagine what a big deal and how exciting and down right scary all of this must be for a refugee. Last night my husband and I met with our new family; father, mother, and 2 small children (5 and 7). The first issue they brought up was that of a sectional sofa they purchased from the Chapel Hill Value City Furniture store. They paid in cash, I cant imagine how long they must have saved, mind you the father makes under $10 an hour and the mother works part time because she must stay home with their 2 children. Nothing was wrong with the sofa or their initial experience, but once they received it they realized it will simply not fit in their home, the doorways are too narrow no matter which way they try to fit it. They only purchased this sofa this month, but it is a few days out of the return policy for VCF. My husband went after he got off work tonight to meet with the manager at VCF as an advocate to this family. They speak very little English and would have absolutely no idea how to return a sofa. They dont even own a car. He explained we arent asking for you to fully refund all of the money, they still would like to get a place to set in their home and would like to find something that will fit in their home. He was told by 3 people there is just simply nothing that can be done. I understand rules are rules, I manage 2 branches for a billion dollar wholesale company myself, but I also know that there is something called humanity and customer service. There is always something that can be done and especially in such an extreme situation as the one I am speaking of. The community you serve in Chapel Hill is extremely close to the North Hill community. Understanding the demographic of the area you serve can go a very long way to improving your business and GP. No one is trying to take advantage, we only met this family last night and this was the very first thing they asked us to assist them with. They have the receipt and the furniture is still in the plastic. There has to be some place in your heart that will allow for a one time exception for a family who truly knows no better. I can provide any kind of paperwork needed to prove this is their situation, but once you meet the family you will be able to see for yourself this is not a farce in any sense. My husband left your store completely deflated, he was literally pushed to tears. I simply can not imagine if we as Americans cant find a way to work through a situation like this how a Congolese refugee can even begin to know how to navigate such a situation. I am ashamed to be an American and an Ohioan at this point when this is the kind of hospitality we extend to the least of these. I hope you can find it in your heart to reconsider and help this family.

This place is a joke. Aside from Wendy who is courteous, patient, helpful and not overbearing, the employees here are pushy, judgemental, and one man made me feel extremely uncomfortable with his body language and lack of understanding personal space. The individuals who work at Acceptance at this location are incompetent to say the least! I visited to explore payment options. The third time we stopped in, Zakk explained that his boss, who was not present during our previous visits, was in a bad mood. I suppose this was the cause for a tremendous amount of completely elusive and cryptic rules and policies which cause me a great deal of frustration and several hours of wasted time. I worked with a different Acceptance in the Cleveland area, not long ago, and the service was OUTSTANDING!-complete polar opposite of my experience that the Chapel Hill location, which was completely annoying and wasteful of my time! At the Brookpark location, there were no unclear discrepancies, and none of the employees, either in the floor or at Acceptance made me feel like they were doing absolutely everything in their power to discourage me or tell me they could not do a, b, or c. They were notably helpful, accommodating and willing to work with me! Besides the quality of the furniture I BOUGHT, I had no complaints. I was willing to give VCF another chance DESPITE the fact that my $2000 sectional took a $h*t after only a few months-sunken in/flattened cushions and a broken chaise frame... The POSITIVES: * I was forced to shop elsewhere and found an awesone piece of furniture which was bigger, better and more reasonably priced than the item I was interested in here. I experienced no run-around or, most importantly weirdness. In the end my search for our new furniture turned out to be a smooth, quality and even enjoyable experience-which it totally should be! *Additionally, I know to never step foot into another one of these stores to waste another penny or more importantly my time and energy! Thanks Chapel Hill VCF.

My boyfriend and I went to buy furniture from VCF for our living room. We found a sofa, ottoman, and recliner. A sales associate by the name of Tawanna (may be incorrect spelling) was helping us she explain 3 payment plans. The first one is a credit check which operates like a credit card, second one is more lenient but operates like a loan and the third plan requires a down payment and paid delivery (thats how Tawanna stated it). I pick the first plan because I have good credit and there is not a delivery charge well thats how she portrayed it. So she runs to get us a quote for our stuff and she comes back explaining the 5 year warranty & how great it is. My boyfriend asked is the warranty an extra fee? She says no. I received the quote that lists "pure promise $189.99" I ask what that is and she says its the warranty. Additionally there is a $99.99 delivery fee which she made it seem like that was only charged with the third plan. So my boyfriend questions her and she denies saying any of that. So he simply asked for a manager we explain to Pete (the kind manager) the situation who ends up waiving the delivery fee helping the situation but he brings Tawanna to the front where she brings the assistant manager (an overweight lady whose name does not matter) who claims she heard Tawanna tell us the what she was suppose to or she would have corrected her and calls us liars. The funny thing about that is she was not around in fact no one else was when tawanna told us the warranty was not an extra cost. As we continue to discuss the situation with Pete. Tawanna walks away arguing and harassing my boyfriend by calling him "an irate customer very typical someone who wants something for nothing" VERY RUDE, OFFENSIVE & JUDGMENTAL. I am a chemist & a financial crimes investigator we earn everything we have. I highly suggest u dont buy furniture from this store and please review our BBB complaint for further details. :)
