Ive been wanting to go to the Scrap Exchange for several years, but didnt take the time until recently. What a fabulous idea to create a place for people and businesses to donate items that would otherwise end up in the dump. And even more fabulous that the concept is to make art with these items. As a general contractor, I was able to make some donations of sample materials that would have otherwise been thrown away. Before you toss something in the trash, check the website to see if they accept donations for that item. You might be surprised. They have all kinds of stuff. I also took the opportunity to use the Make and Take Room for a random art project. Its nice to get the creative juices flowing using random materials. This is a great place for kids and adults also.

While I like the place itself, driving to the new location requires spending a lot of time in some unfriendly neighborhoods. The place itself also isnt in the best of areas. The old location was in a little better area, I didnt spend 20-30 minutes driving through unfriendly neighborhoods to get to it at least. Wouldnt recommend going in the dark. I went twice when it was dark, the first time there was a drug deal on the further side of the parking lot. Second time, a group of people just walking around the parking lot in the dark with seemingly no legitimate reason to be there. Again, the place itself is great, just the area is not.

What a unique place! If you are looking for some craft, art, or other DIY supplies this should be your first stop. The things they have range from practical (fabric, stamps, scrapbook paper, frames, hardware, etc) to bizarre and funny (old medical containers, vintage board games, giant pieces of foam, recycled political yard signs, left over 5k race medals, etc). They have everything, including the occasional kitchen sink. If you are looking for inspiration for some DIY fun, stop by and spend a few bucks here. Youll spend quite a while wandering around the very large square footage - this is not a quick stop.

The Scrap Exchange is a great place to find materials for projects and also things you didnt know you wanted! A great example of upcycling, where materials are saved from the landfill and are sorted and organized so that you can buy them. The store is organized so that it is easy to find the areas that include fabric, paper goods, empty boxes, and also the other strange things that come in (including a mounted swordfish, a large suitcase, and a huge bin of small plastic balls.) I love to come here when I have a project in mind, or just to get some materials to get creative.

Im just sorry I didnt come here until I was already living in Durham for 2 years. Every fix-it project, craft project, sewing project, kids project, it all starts here now. Oddball parts, cell phone chargers, pieces of leather, upholstery scraps, curtain rods, ribbon, greeting cards, boxes, tubs, you name it, for pennies on the dollar, well organized, with super-nice helpful staff who do know where everything is. If youre a DIY kind of person, before you head to a hardware/fabric/craft store, check here first!

The Scrap Exchange embodies the old adage, "one mans trash is another mans treasure." If your an artist, DIYer, creative person or just thrifty then theres something here for you. Like to sew? They have vintage and contemporary fabrics on sale. Believe it sounds better on vinyl? Got it. Building a tiny house? There are fixtures, windows and wood and other materials. Youll have to sort and work your way through some of these goodies, but if your patient and creative there are some solid finds.

Antique store prices at a JUNK store?!?!? I was pretty turned off when finding some really nice vintage items at DOUBLE their current selling prices on eBay and other sites....This makes no sense to me, as even dickering down to half the cost would leave no meat on the bone for a reseller.....The other stuff is good for crafty people who live in the city, with no other access to scrap materials...Not in the best neighborhood.. Probably wont go back for a while.

This is a great place for those of us who hoard craft supplies! Its also a great place for those of us who like funky garden structures. Or perhaps you like to collect test tubes and Bunsen burners. Collages made out of old photographs other people have thrown away? There is something here for everyone, I assure you. A great place to spend a morning or an afternoon. Spend a little money! Create something interesting!

Just discovered this place. It is amazing for picking. They had awesome science equipment like test tubes and beakers of all shapes and sizes, bolts of cloth and leather for projects, books, wrapping paper, random bits and pieces, etc. We had a blast in here and found all kinds of fun things. If you need some off the wall stuff for a project thats super cheap, this place is a good one to start your search in.

Wow. The iconic scrap exchange is a combination of expertly sorted collage art supply and categorized vintage thrift mega store. They also offer workshops on how to use the ephemera they provide. Classes like homemade Christmas cards using recycled items. This place deserves a Grammy, Oscar and Nobel peace prize. What an incredible contribution they provide to the local community.

Durhams premier place for recycled stuff to power the imagination. They also offer classes in sewing, knitting and many other skills. I rarely escape without something unexpected. Recent purchases: a slightly used bicycle seat for $2, an ancient National Geographic magazine for $1, a neat basket for gathering mushrooms or storing paper for $3.

We usually find good deals. However, the pricing continues to be inconsistent. With everything being donated, something used should not cost more that purchasing new. I will say that when we went Tuesday, the sweet lady that checked us out was one of the nicest employees that we have met and the shelves were full!

I have to drive almost an hour to get to Durham now that Ive moved away, but still make the drive about once a month for the sole purpose of coming to the Scrap Exchange. You can find so many great items if you go in with a creative mind. I have never left without an armful of goodies to come home and create with.

The Scrap Exchange has an amazing place to go browse for craft projects, have a birthday party (and not just kids either) or take your kids to. They are also fabulous members of our community. They recently sent a team out to Forest View Elementary Schools annual Fall Festival and our kids had a blast! Thanks!

This place is a dream come true for crafty and creative types. Its like I found the stashbuster/yard sale of a thousand creators all at once. Its overwhelming in the best way, I want everything but have to pace myself. I already have plans to go back and do a more thorough search when I have more time. Love it!

An eclectic mix of crafting supplies from donations. Cheap fabric, old lab glassware, various sheets and pieces of wood and plastic. Especially if you costume or make items from found objects, this is a wonderful place to spend a few hours looking through the various things they have!

This is a great place to pick up crafting materials, and shop for all sorts of odds and ends. I tend to go there for the music and movies, but they have books, building materials, antiques, fabric, electronics, everything. Im not too fond of the location. The staff are friendly.
