Been a longtime customer of Melindas since they were in the Flat Iron building I stop into OE about once a week or so when out paying bills and running errands, usually enjoy the encounters with staff or Melinda Went in today, there were two employees behind the counter, one counting money in the till, one waiting for some seniors to look through the case and ask questions I saw that the register girl was counting the till so I politely waited { I worked in foodservice as a chef, for 20+ years, 3rd generation in my family, and if there is one thing I know it is the service industry } I waited a few minutes and still either girl failed to at least acknowledge me, so I asked the girl counting if I could have a bottle of Perrier Her response was to stick her finger in my face, waving in my face like I was a toddler, and exclaimed to me: " Im not here right now " ................... Well, I realize that not everybody is on point or able to multitask, so despite the rude response, I laid a 5$ on the counter and told her that she could ask the other girl to turn around, grab a Perrier { takes 5 seconds } and told her I would use the bathroom and get my drink when I came out, and told her she could keep the change for a tip A bottle of Perrier costs about 2.75$ and I pay with a 5$ and leave the change as a tip, which is almost a 100% tip I figured she didnt have to use the register since I was leaving them the remainder as a tip, she didnt have to stop counting the money in the till, she didnt have to to anything but simply turn to the left and ask the girl she was working with to grab a damn bottle of Perrier out of the cooler I made it stress free, and offered a large tip because Im a nice guy and progressive thinker So I went and used the restroom, and came out to find the money sitting on the counter and the girls both unresponsive I replied, " never mind " and took my 5$ back off the counter, was in a bit of a hurry to make an appointment and didnt want to wait 10 minutes for a bottle of Perrier I went outside, sat down for a minute { was carrying a whole case of bottles of wine from the Weinhaus for somebody } The girl actually followed me out of the store, demanded my name, and told me she was " calling Melinda because I was so rude " Having fired plenty of bad attitude-having servers in Asheville over the years, I can only say that was one of the rudest things I have ever seen a counter person / server do to a customer in my 20+ years in the business Basically telling a customer to " talk to the hand " because you cannot multitask is a poor excuse, ..but... ...following the customer out of the store and demanding their name so they can call the owner and complain about them is a whole different level of ridiculousness Well, thats going to be the end of my purchases at OE for a while until Melinda properly trains her new staff, and teaches them basic customer service skills Killer pastries though, no lie

A small variety as far as pastry shops go... ...but the largest variety in Asheville. The $2 chocolate chip cookie was one of the best Ive ever had, the tiramisu was excellent, the cheesecake was good, the croissant, though not traditional, was very yeasty and tasty and the quiche had perfect flaky crust. Some of their items here have a unique non traditional twist. I was hoping for more traditional Italian and French pastries like a Napoleon...my favorite pastry and IMO perfect...but they have some kind of variation I was not interested in trying...you cant improve on perfect. All in all, my visit here was satisfactory and everything I tried was good.

Walked into this place to get a coffee as we were visiting asheville for the first time and I got a mocha coffee with caramel to go. OMG this coffee was the best Ive ever had!!! I had to come back for another one a few hours later as we were still walking around the city because I was so impressed with the coffee the first time. Sure enough second time around I wasnt disappointed either. The girls who work there are really nice and the place is so cool looking, takes me back in time to the place I used to go eat my Sunday desert at with my grandparents when I was a kid. I grew up in Eastern Europe ;) Im having desert next time I go there for sure!

The location is great, the food is great, but impossible to get caring service. Our own server never filled our waters or cleared a single dish off of our table, nor did any other server bother to help ours. I ordered a mid-rare steak, which came out well done, and when I told our server, he did not offer in any way to correct the problem, but looked at me like he had no idea what my problem was. I brought my mother there and felt as though our business obviously meant nothing to the staff.

I really like coming to this cafe and frequent it more than any other cafe in Asheville. The pastries are mostly good and the drinks are amazing. Its a little pricey but its worth it. The reason I have to give a three is because of the smoking. There are two tables outside and when people smoke (which they can) it all comes inside. And then you dont smell your coffee, but cigarette smoke instead. I hope they will change this soon.

I have traveled widely and have years of experience. From all of that, I have a mental list of my most favorite places, people, experiences. This place is on my short list. Even just looking at the display case, is comparable to a visiting a fine art gallery. To have coffee and a pastry there, is a complete sensual indulgence one should not miss. When friends visit me from out of town, I always take them here.

This is the best coffee & dessert location in Asheville. (I also like the chocolate lounge however their products are much too rich, so if you like a lot of sweet, go there too!) Someone posted a bad review about steaks.... They dont serve steaks so I think the review is of the wrong place... I love the staff, it is quaint, open late, great selection and genuine espresso drinks... Not like Starbucks :D

I like the place a lot, a bit small and has kind of a cold depressing feel, but I like the coffee and pastries. The door is always open though and the new cute male barista smokes like a chimney,as do other patrons outside. Trying to enjoy your coffee and pastries in the shop with smoke from outside being blown into the place is not an enjoyable - it causes headaches and is bad for people with asthma.

My friends planned a lovely surprise visit to Old Europe for one of the stops on my bachelorette weekend. OE provided some thoughtful personalized touches to our visit and while I already had a special place in my heart for them they blew me away with the effort they put forward making sure this stop was a wonderful visit. Bobby the manager was a wonderful point of contact and we loved him as well!

Old Europe Pastries was the perfect addition to our trip to Asheville!! The desserts were SO AMAZING. The Rigo and Black Diamond are fantastic if you like rich or dark chocolate, and their coffee was some of the best Ive ever had. We included this as one of our stops for a Bachelorette Party and the staff made this an unforgettable experience for our bride! This is a MUST STOP if youre in town!!
