My wife and I make it a point to stop at French Broad every time we come to Asheville(which is usually once a year) from Virginia Beach. This Christmas I thought I would surprise her with a large box of chocolates as a gift, seeing as how we were unable to make our annual trip out there this summer. I called and placed an order over the phone(the section of their website in which to order was down, in addition to the fact that my wife has a severe gluten allergy and I had some additional questions as to which chocolates she could have) the second week of December, and was assured that there was still plenty of time to have the order placed and still have it arrive before Christmas. I was told that before the order would be shipped out, that I would be receiving a call as they were charging my card. Its now afternoon on Christmas Eve, Ive yet to receive a call, and my card has yet to be charged. I called the day before yesterday(12/22/14) to make sure that it would still be delivered on time. I was put on hold for a number of minutes as the lady on the other end searched for the order. She finally came back and said that she had a hard time finding it, but said that it was printed and packaged to be sent out that evening. After not having my card charged, nor receiving a call since, Ive called numerous times, left messages, and have not received any word back... Thank you French Broad for making me look like a fool. I understand that you probably get busy with orders from Christmas patrons, but if you plan on taking advantage of Christmas time business, you should plan and prepare accordingly, so as not to ruin anyones Christmas experience. If I do not receive a call or any contact from French Broad before tomorrow, I fully plan on contacting the Better Business Bureau in your area, as well as the complaints section of Ashevilles city website.

This place provided one of the very best chocolate experiences Ive ever had in my entire life. Chocolate is my number one. Im pretty happy to eat it in any form, but cream based desserts are my favorites - ice cream, cheesecake, mousse, pudding. My husband and I went to French Broad last night and shared four items. Only one of them was a disappointment and I want to cover it first to get it out of the way. Their ice cream is just not for me - it has more of an icy texture than a creamy one and it also lacks the punch of flavor that I have come to expect. So the Salted Caramel and Chocolate milkshake simply didnt do it for me. However, everything else was fantastic! The Chocolate Creme Brulee was smooth and creamy with the perfect sugar crust. I was absolutely smitten with the layered pudding/mousse of chocolate and caramel. But the Liquid Truffle was my favorite - mostly because its so unique! Where else can you get this?!? These Liquid Truffles are served in a tiny espresso-sized cup. They have the flavor and thick of consistency of melted chocolate, which is basically all I want out of life. We tried the Salted Caramel and fell in love. I would absolutely buy one for every visit. On my way out, I stopped next door at Chocolate and Milk to gawk at their Chocolate Library and to pick up some treats for the road. I also treated myself to one of their fantastic truffles - some deliciously rich peanut butter and chocolate thing. This place had many other treats that look very tempting. Next time I would consider the Chocolate Mousse, the Coconut Macaroon Brownie or the Chocolate Tart. So many choices!

The bakery that was originally going to do my wedding cake never returned my phone calls (after having a meeting with them) and when there was only one month left before the wedding I panicked. My cater recommended French Broad so I decided to give them a try. I had never been to their lounge and Jael Rattigan (the owner) was very helpful and offered us a free tasting. Since both my husband and I love chocolate and craft beers, she suggested the Highland Black Mocha Stout and we loved it! The cake looked exactly what I requested! She even made the white buttercream frosting that we requested and it was delicious! Everybody at the wedding agreed that it was one of the best cakes they have ever had :) The best part is that this cake is part of their regular desserts so you can enjoy it any time!

Bad service....ordered two oaxaca chocolate drinks. Only got one chocolate drink delivered to our table and asked the waitress where was the second. Waitress was clueless. She went back to find out what happened. Ten minutes later she came back with another type of chocolate drink that had chili in it. Not what I ordered. I took the wrong drink to the cashier and asked for my correct chocolate drink. They where willing to make it right and said it should be ready soon. Waited another 15 minutes and went back to the cashier and asked if my drink was ready. Turns out that nobody made the drink. Total elapsed time was about 40 minutes by now. So, I cancelled my drink order and left a very frustrated customer. Probably will never return nor will I recommend this place.

Very tasty choices, fine service, but way, way too noisy for me. We sat upstairs on hard chairs. Nice view and lots of space, but little kids were running around, screaming, while their parents and grandparents had very loud conversations. The hardwood floors make the sounds carry around the entire large area. Adding cushions to all chairs, and perhaps a quiet play area for kids, with a thick rug and soft toys (no noisy ones!) would help for noise reduction and to pacify unwatched, bored youngsters. (I volunteer at the Asheville Visitor Center and Ill recommend this place to tourists who want a lively atmosphere, but warn them about the noise problems.......)

Probably the coolest place in Asheville if you have a sweet tooth. If you go at night or the weekend youll probably have a long wait, but its worth every minute. Ive never had anything that wasnt amazing, but my favorites are the chocolate creme brulee, trifles (these change seasonaly), and macaroon brownie. If you like coffee you have to try the jitterbug. I vacation to Asheville 1-2 times a year and come here just about every night of the trip. The atmosphere is great too - since they moved locations there is always enough seating. Free wifi and if youre lucky you can snag the couch.

We heard about this place and were super excited about our visit this morning...since it was our first time. We had carrot cake and a hot chocolate which was very good. However, Im giving a two star rating because the service was laughable. At the counter, we mentioned this was our first time, and the young girl just looked at us with a blank stare as if we were lost or something. I was hoping to hear a short overview of the menu or something, but she just stood there with a smug look on her face. I guess they dont appreciate first timers. Dont think well be back anytime soon.

Decided after dinner we wanted dessert. Since it was a busy Saturday night we had to wait in line for at least 15 minutes . Grab some dessert with a group of 8 people and walked over to get a chocolate fix. Got Cider float with hoppin john local made hard cider with Peruvian chocolate ice cream. Mud wrestler local stout beer, nice cup of vanilla ice cream, Expresso and Chocolate drizzle. Nibby brownie with crunchy cacao nibs. Chocolate sip which is home made chocolate steamed with just enough water to be sippable. We all shared and agreed that those were the highlights.
