Looking for a bicycle to get around in Syracuse? Whether your budget is $250 or $2500, you dont have to look any further: this is THE place! The staff at Mello Velo, including superstars Steve and Neil, is extremely competent, friendly and helpful. They always have a wide selection and will let you test drive the bike youre interested in. When I first moved to Syracuse two years ago, I bought a used Raleigh for a couple of hundred dollars, and this bike made it through two Syracuse winters!! Simply a fantastic buy/investment. Spare parts were super cheap and the guys at Mello Velo were even able to turn it into a single speed upon my request! In other words, if you want a one-of-a-kind customized bike, theyll hook you up for a very good price! In the spring of last year I bought a Specialized Roubaix from them ($2500 bike), and I this is the best bike Ive ever owned. They made sure it was set up perfectly for me, and when it came to maintenance, they were incredibly fair price-wise. Their help and guidance along the way (I had never owned a road-bike that nice before) made my riding experience so much better. Last summer, two of my friends came and visited me, and the guys at Mello Velo gave them a fantastic deal on bike rentals. They rented great-quality road bikes and helmets, locks and spare tires were included in the already very low price! We ended up driving from Syracuse and around Skaneateles lake that day, and had an awesome time! Im from Denmark (arguably the bicycle capital of the world), so Ive been riding bicycles all my life, but I have to tell you folks: This is by far the best bike shop Ive ever been to! Go there for the warm atmosphere, the accommodating people and the best bikes in upstate New York, as well as for the great beverages and tasty food in the café thats right next to the bike shop. Whether youre a student and need wheels to get around the campus area, or whether you need a bike to get to and from work, you wont find better bang for your buck (value for money) in Syracuse. In short, I simply cannot recommend Mello Velo Bicycle Shop & Cafe highly enough!

SCAM CITY! Dont buy all these 5 star posts....its just freinds and employees. I Purchased a Deluxe Bike Tune up through Groupon from these guys. Through a hectic travel and personal schedule, I missed my window for getting the work done. I attempted to redeem the voucher a week after it expired....Thinking a few business days would not be a big deal, i was dead wrong. They laughed in my face when i tried to redeem my voucher a week late. (this is not a coupon for free service, I PAID $65 for this voucher!) They said they were too busy to deal with me and that I should have redeemed the voucher before it expired!!! I get the premise, and agree if i was trying to redeem a coupon (free service) or was a year late, i get it.....but i PAID $65 dollars for service that is now being declined! I was stunned. - A few business days late and "hit the trail buddy"? "Thanks for the easy $65.00!" Id avoid this place at all costs. If they will nail me on a technicality on a voucher, it is probably not an isolated incident, but a way of doing business. At minimum if you see a voucher or coupon deal for this outfit, dont do it. theyll find the fine print and rip you off. AVOID THESE SCAMMERS !!!!!

Bought a lock and helmet - first guy was super helpful re: which one to buy, etc. very smooth process. While I was installing the lock, second sales associate asked me if I could do it not here. After dropping $180 I was asked to leave to set it up elsewhere because they had no room in the bike shop. Significantly, there are two bike lifts for work behind the counter. One was free. Maybe he could have offered me one to set up the lock, which would have taken 5 minutes and not an ounce of otherwise used space. Turned out that the lock didnt fit my bike super well, and it would have been best to loosen a water bottle holding screw with an Allen wrench that I didnt have - had I been in the shop, they could have facilitated that process easily. But I was outside, and not keen to go back in. Had the store been super busy I would have understood, but there was literally one other customer in the shop. What an ass. To summarize, your chances are 50/50 of working with a total moron or very helpful salesperson. You might even get both! Good luck.

Why a 5-star place? Where to start? First (and far from most important) , the location is in a cool area of Syracuse. Lots of young upscale college kids from all around the country either live near here or visit this area (Westcott St.). Then the place is up some crappy stairs (in a good way) and when you reach the top of the stairs a bonus: you usually have to climb over a native dog that is usually fast asleep, make the careful step to the right, balancing your bike in one hand, dont step on the dog and make it to the counter. Then theres the staff: young, bright, too damn good looking (male and female) always eager to help and ridicoulsly knowledgeable about bikes. The prices are right. Its always buzzing with people (customers). Then there is a café an coffee shop next door, staffed with an eclectic assortment of folks that are a joy to be around. If you are in the Syracuse area and need your bicycle fixed or need a new (and a Holy Crap expensive) bike, you have to give this place a look. Hard to see any negatives...really.

I went in to buy a road bike - upgrading from a cheapo hybrid. The staff was incredibly knowledgeable and friendly. Had several choices between new and used bikes in a variety of price points. Invited me outside to test drive the bikes and I had his full attention. He pointed out the pros and cons of each bike and was geniuinely interested in my feedback to sell me the best bike for me. Absolutely no pressure sales. He allowed me plenty of time to decide which bike was right for me. All my questions were answered without making me feel silly or like i was wasting his time. I am incredibly happy with the level of service as well as the bike itself. I am completely confident that they will stand by their product should I have any issue. I cannot recommend more strongly - if you are looking for a quality bike and want to be treated like a valued customer, Mello Velo is THE place to go!

As usual Mello Velo impresses me with great bikes, parts, and especially people and atmosphere. While Mello Velo isnt quite a LBS to me they are worth the drive from Watertown to Syracuse. In a world of untrustworthy businesses who are only out for themselves the guys at Mello Velo always seem like someone you can take at their word. As an intermediate bicyclist who knows what I want but still needs a trustworthy opinion from someone more experienced I always find Mello Velo to be just what Im looking for. On one of the coldest days of the Winter with some iffy road conditions we set out to Syracuse to visit Mello Velo, my intention being to just check out what was available. And I went away happy with a brand new bike. Thanks guys.
