Hopson Review
Though the term general store may be a little bit of a stretch (its more of a lifestyle boutique + upscale micro-grocer), CSGS has a beautifully curated selection of a variety of items, perfectly packed into a very small space, and is by far the best store weve seen of its kind. The staff are friendly, knowledgable, and helpful, while mostly keeping to themselves behind the counter. Their charming all-wood interior, old-school refrigerator-turned beer tap, and American flag are some of our favourite details. Assuming things here change fairly frequently, when we visited, the food room in back consisted mostly of snack-type items (crisps, granola, candies) with very few real food items to be found. The cooler seems to be where they keep the good stuff: in there they also had vegetable ferments, raw cheese, pasture-raised eggs, and a limited supply of other heartier stock. At the time, we hadnt yet heard of The Barn at the General Store, which is seasonal and only on weekends, but that appears to be where one could find more of what the brick-and-mortar is lacking – namely produce. We appreciate that while CSGS aims to maintain a local, even hyper-locally-focused selection, they also clearly understand that sometimes better quality items can only come from farther away, like London-based Bellocqs teas grown in China or Juniper Ridges perfumes wildcrafted on the West Coast. It is also appreciated that CSGS has kept the kitschy, novelty gift items to a bare minimum. This seems to be a common pit other stores in the genre too often fall into that theyve pleasantly avoided. Most everything here is actually fairly practical. That being said, the overt handsomeness of basically every object in the store makes it feel as if its almost a pre-requisite for items that CSGS carries to be aesthetically appealing in a slightly less pulled together Kinfolk-y sort of way. This is not to say that things cant be both attractive and well-made, but were skeptical that everything is/tastes/works/feels as good as it looks. Of course, we ourselves are fans of good design (Who isnt?), but never at the expense of a quality product. An unfortunate criteria if kept too strict. And while we do realize we may be particularly sensitive, the term general store implies not only that they stock a wide range of practical items, but also that the general public can afford to shop there. Perhaps because Cold Springs general public is relatively well-to-do and otherwise made up of similarly well-off tourists weekending away from the city, this still applies. Regardless of whether or not they can afford it though, its hard for us to imagine that CSGS serves as many locals go-to for daily or even weekly wares. Our nitpicking aside, were very glad that Cold Spring General Store exists. It might not be the most practical place, but its fun, very well done, and clearly has good intentions.

Walking into the Cold Spring General Store is like being transported back in time...a time where local store owners knew your name and stocked the store with everything you could ever want and desire! Owners Craig and Deanna are so friendly and welcoming...you almost feel like you are in their home. The curated collections of gift, home and pantry are locally sourced and have HEART! I cannot say enough great things about this store...I have purchased everything from luxury throws to gourmet cooking books to my favorite late night snack (bjorn popcorn). This store is a must visit if you are stopping by to charming downtown Cold Spring, NY.

One of the nicest, friendliest shops to open in Cold Spring, the general store has it all- from its delightful interior to the high quality produce and other viands youll find on their well stocked shelves. The owners have done a wonderful job of setting up the space and filling it with all sorts of delicious food and beverages. Be sure to check out their selection of craft beers, local cheese and many other unusual items. A great addition to the Village of Cold Spring for sure.

Very nice and neat store, but u unnecessary expensive. Everything is artisanal, organic or something of the sort, so prices are just unreasonable. The only thing thats really worth the money is the draft beer. Try it there and fill your own growler

Very cool store. Lots of Hudson Valley products. We make a trip from New City a couple times a year just to visit this store. Great gift ideas, too.
