I went to this Barns and Noble specifically to get a latte in the cafe and get some work done. I was very dismayed to see, after I got my latte, that there were no power outlets in the cafe area. I asked the barista and she said that there were some available upstairs and there were tables and such around up there as well. Unfortunately, I wasnt able to find any. I asked the staff if there were any outlets available and every member of the staff rudely told me that they are not an internet cafe, I cant just come and plug in and hang out, they dont want people loitering around the store with their computers, etc. One person on the staff even had the gall to say "we dont want hobos just hanging out on their computers all day". I spoke with the manager (actually, I believe two were present) to tell them of my frustration both with the lack of outlet accessibility and the attitudes of the staff. One manager maintained the same attitude of her staff stating that they are not an internet cafe, and the other actually tried to determine which staff members had been so rude and told me of some outlets available. I am extremely frustrated that not only was I unable to get the work done that I had set out to do, but that I was treated like a leach on society by all of the staff for simply asking for a power outlet. I am now at a starbucks up the road where there are tons of power outlets, friendly staff and wifi. Dear Barns and Noble-- if you give a customer a latte, they will want some wifi to go with it... and power outlets. The joke is really on them, because I would have done some shopping while I was there.

I worked here as a cashier when this location first opened its doors. And I havent set foot in this store again until today. Wow. The Nook display took over most of the first floor, shifting everything around. I remember when they used to give readings on the mezzanine where the Mystery section was. But what I remember most is that on a sunny Saturday afternoon like today, all the registers would be manned. All of them. Today, there wasnt even a line. The store looks busy... but its deceptive. People have always come here to read books and magazines for free. Hell, B&N used to provide note paper for people to copy recipes. Now theyre selling yoga mats to make ends meet. With the advent of Wi-Fi (they didnt have it when I worked here... God Im old) the Cafe is packed almost beyond capacity. It wasnt designed in the late 80s with the kind of loitering Wi-Fi demands. And though they do sell Frappuccinos, they are a "B&N Cafe" and carry very different pastries and tarts than your run of the mill Starbucks. This was the first Megabookstore in the chain, opening up a whole new concept of bookselling. With any luck the UWS store will be the last. Barnes and Noble Booksellers is a bastion to the printed word, besieged on all sides by digital media and Amazon Prime© 2 Day Free Shipping. Maybe its karma... Lots of independent booksellers died at the end of the Barnes & Noble sword. The King is dead. Long Live the King.

Bought a book and, halfway through, found that 30 pages were missing. Returned to store to be told there were no more copies and I would have to go to the eastside of NYC to get another copy. The book, if sent by UPS, would not reach me before I left on vacation the following day. My choices: leave the book and get my money back; keep the book; or take a bus across town to get a new copy. Requested that the book be delivered by someone to store where I would return to pick it up. Was told there was not sufficient staff and I "had a decision to make". The "manager" also said it was a "publishing" problem. I reminded him that the book was the stores product and the store should rectify the problem. Whatever happened to pleasing the customer? When I went to the eastside store, I was told by "Customer Service" to "get on the phone" next time. How does that help? I guess Ill have to get a kindle, although it wont be a Barnes and Noble.

Went in during holidays last year @ 9:45pm to use a member coupon. What i wanted was downstairs and they said they close that department early. So disappointed I was leaving when the security guard who recognized me from being a regular shopper in another Barnes Nobles asked me what I got? I spend a lot in all their stores, Im a writer. I told him what happened and he took me to see the manager on duty that night, explaining what a good customer I was and that it wasnt 10pm yet, I had called before I headed over as well to check on closing time. The manager could have cared less. Thats fine, I was OK w going and buying it somewhere else anyway. But to close a section of the store early all the time, which he told me they do, but tell and put on ur website that ur store is open until a certain time is dumb and bad customer service. Ive never been back cause now I feel awkward there, like they dont want my business.

My favorite Barnes & Noble stores. One of the few left that have some unique character. Helpful staff. Now if the Barnes & Noble Board of Directors could just bring in a whole new management team, maybe they can still save this company. But simply expanding the café is only a part of the solution. The company needs to address its core issues. (1) What else can we sell besides books? The puzzles and other educational products are a good step. Needs to get broader. (2) Find a publishing partner for the Nook. Its dead man walking right now. (3) The absolute silliness of their pricing strategy, which obviously does not work. Personally, I think their membership program needs to be more like Amazon Prime, but in addition to the free shipping includes pricing parity with their online store.

I love Barnes & Noble normally. When I have work to do I go there work and typically buy a drink and book after completing my coursework for the day. Unfortunately this B&N falls far short of my normal expectations. I have been here 3 times, this is three strikes, I will not be returning. 1) I have never been asked if I need any help. 2) I have been rudely spoken too on a number of occasions when I have asked questions. 3) My battery life is approximately 3 hours on my lap top, this means I typically have to charge once during a visit. The number of available outlets is atrociously low or placed in extremely poor areas for use. I have never had this much problems working at a B&N anywhere in the country. I strongly do not recommend this B&N for any circumstances.

While its hard to miss the wide selection of books and magazines packed into every corner, I came to this B&N chasing rumors that it had some exclusive plastic model kits in stock. Though it was missing the computer kiosks of the last B&N Ive been to, and having missed the information desk by THIS much, I found exactly what I came for. The modest selection was bunched up in a little display, and all but one of the completed models in the display window were unavailable. But I still found that one kit I wanted and snagged a few trinkets on the side, all at the lowest price youd find offline.
