Tropical World is awesome! I have kept African Cichlids off and on for more than 20 years. When I talked my boyfriend into changing his big community tank into a Cichlid world, we found Tropical world. The store is well organized, with a huge selection. I can spend great lengths of time in the african cichlid aisles. They have glorious show tanks and an excellent selection of fish for sale at great prices. The staff is courteous and knowledgeable. They are also honest. If a staff member is not sure about something, they will admit it and go find someone who does know. Yes, like all people in business, they want to make the sale, but they do so responsibly. They have warned my boyfriend on more than one occasion about pretty little cichlids who might not be tough enough to hang in our aggressive Mbuna tank, saving us money and fish lives. I keep freshwater fish, but love to stroll through the gorgeous saltwater section. The trip is like a day at the aquarium, minus the otters. Tropical World also has a nice, huge selection of tanks, accessories, food and more. When I moved to the St. Louis area from Atlanta, I wasnt sure i could find a source of cat cable as good as the ones in a much larger city, but Tropical World has it all! It is also a much better place to start or continue the hobby than the big corporate pet stores. They have the products, and more importantly the knowledge, to make the hobby of keeping fish a truly enjoyable art.

Let me start by commenting about why I like TWP. They have a GREAT selection, a ton of fish, and theyre generally very helpful. Its such a great store that my girlfriend and I (we both keep fish) drive 45 minutes over the river to get there. Weve bought some Bichirs and Loaches and Catfish from there, because they have the guts to carry oddballs. Albeit theyre usually a bit more expensive, its generally not by much. BUT, today I went in and asked about getting some monster fish for my newly set up 125 gallon tank. The guy laughed about it and called it "just a little tank." Im a college student, and Ive been saving up for MONTHS to get that tank. It was a pretty big accomplishment for me. I live in a small house, and thats the biggest tank my house can have. So then I asked him why they were charging $80.00 for a juvenile Silver Arowana, and if he could give me a price break. He informed me that theyre worth 80.00, and if I can find a better price somewhere else, they still wont drop the price, and to go there. All in all, great place, great fish. I would still recommend this place to anyone looking for some neat fish. I, however, will not be returning. Your dopey-goatee employee just lost you two loyal customers today. PS - my local chain store ordered me a 5 inch Silver Arowana for $40.00

So, I was in this store for the first time last week and I have to say I was really impressed. They had an impressive selection of fish. They had fish there that you dont typically see in most fish stores. They had a good selection of freshwater shrimp. They had lots of equipment that wasnt too high priced. Huge driftwood selection as well. There were only two things that gave me pause and caused me to lower my rating a star. Deformed fish: I noticed in three or four tanks they had one or two deformed fish which made me question the overall quality of their supplier. Most tanks were perfectly fine but when I see deformed fish in multiple tanks it makes me hesitate. Algae Covered Plants: Im a planted tank guy and so I went to look at the plants. They had a section in the back with multiple tanks stuffed with plants. I did notice that most of the swords in one of the tanks all had some Black Beard Algae (which is the worst algae to try and get rid of in a planted tank). I will never buy plants from a tank where I see BBA. Its terrible once it gets in your tank its next to impossible to get rid of and can take over very quickly. I just think, if youre going to sell plants you have to keep them in better condition than that.

Having been a "wet thumb" for over 30 years, I love nothing better than a good fish store. This store has a good selection of Tanganyikans, and decent selection of Central and South American cichlids- if your into the different "oddball" stuff the Peacock Gudgeons and the Fahaka Puffers are very cool! I disagree with the selling of Red Tail Cats and other monster fish- but money is money right? Having worked at the Old Beldts Aquarium 20 years ago, I was very spoiled with obtaining the fish I dreamed about- this place has one of the better selections but the customer servicer is HORRIBLE. I have asked questions about fish and it was if I was bothering them! It usually sounds as if a RAVE party is going on in the place as the music is at some concert level of decibels! The place has a odorous aroma that should be fixed as well. If you know your fish and know what to look for you can find decent deals- but be prepared for rude assistance- Good Luck

The theme continues... I work a couple miles down the road and stopped by after work. I wasnt sure they were open but went inside. Two people who were outside smoking followed me in. I walked around for 10 minutes looking at the variety of aquatic life...the plant section in particular was very good, but at no point could I see an employee. When I checked out, I learned they were discussing where to get dinner from...they decided on Subway, rather then seeing what help folks may need. The variety here was decent with mostly cichlids, brackish and saltwater fish but the prices were high. For price + variety and a clean store, Id go to Pet Marketplace in Yorkshire Plaza before I go back to this store. HOWEVER, if you can stand a bit of grime, GO TO BELDTS. Yes, its dirty in dripping in places, but you went there for fish and their price + selection is the BEST! Plus you can check their website for coupons and on sale fish!

I liked the store itself but Im not sure we will be going back. The guy that talked to us made us feel judged. We had recently set up a tank (my dad has had many aquariums in his lifetime, had a whole room full at one point) and were looking for some simple inexpensive fish to add to the handful we already had. The guy told us that our tank hadnt been set up long enough, that our thinking was old school and strongly advised us against getting fish. Now I respect the info he was sharing with us but it was the condesending, judgemental tone which put me off. Not to mention we had driven 40 minutes to check out the store and were basically being told to go home. We ended up getting a few fish anyway which he wasnt happy about and which, by the way, are doing really well about a month later. To the guys credit he cares about the fish but he could be less overbearing.
