I bought my first road bike here about 12 years ago and have had reason to go in and get things I needed over the years but have usually maintained the bike myself. This year I was having some problems with the shifters and knowing it had never been professionally gone over I brought it in. The staff there are pretty inattentive at times especially if there are several working (strange), but generally it is OK. When I brought my bike in, one of the staff had a quick look and said the chain was problem and it had to be replaced and because the chain needed replacing I needed a new cassette. This is after he initially told me that I needed a whole new set of shifters! The bike did not need any shifters. Money is not really a big issue, so although I felt I was being bamboozled I agreed. I was told it would take about 7-10 days. I left the bike there. I was phoned the day before the bike was due to be picked up and told that they did not have the correct cassette and had to order this ( I wish they had done this day 1, the the staff member had taken a cassette off the wall and said it was correct on day 1) A week later I went in to check where my bike was, another staff member told me that the part had still not come, when I asked when this might happen I was very rudely told that it would come when it came. He then turned around and starting to chat to one of the other staff. Today I went in 4 weeks after I initially had brought the bike in (after missing a month of cycling) and said I just wanted the bike. The same staff member looked it up and said it was done, when I asked why I had not been phoned he told me my number did not work (although they had phoned me on the same number 3 weeks before). I climb on the bike when I get out of the store and try to ride it, but whoever test rode it had not adjusted the seat back to where I had it. Unbelievable! I am a big supporter of local and I live in downtown Salem, I do not mind paying extra to support local business but I doubt if I will go to Salem Cycle again.

After I decided to buy a pair of cycling shoes for $100, the owner, Dan Shuman, refused to do me a favor and disconnect my bike chain for free (I had trouble doing it, even after watching some YouTube videos). Its normally a 2 minute job. He made up some BS and said he might have to keep the bike overnight because he didnt know what was wrong with it. I pushed and he said he would take a look at it, so I got the bike from my car, and the college kid disconnected the chain in 2 minutes. Dan charged me $8, compared to the $5 that the Marblehead bike store offered. Instead of praising Dan Shuman for doing me a favor, and helping me understand how to fix my bike, Ill never go there again because he tried to turn a 2 minute job into a 2 day fix. He also tried to scare me into getting a $75 tune up by telling me that the bike place that put most of my bike together in another state did it wrong.

I was in Salem this week and happened to stop in at Salem Cycle. It is like the pied piper calling when a bike shop is in town. The guys in the shop, Joe and Tim were just fabulous to watch. The care that they took with each person, the obvious passion and knowledge they showed was impressive. I would have not guessed that a small town like Salem would have such depth in a bike shop. Then it happened, a customer comes in, clearly with limited financial means with a broken skewer. For those not in the know, that is the part that holds the wheel on. One of the guys disappears for a moment in the back and comes back with one. He hands it to the customer who then asks how much, the response- thats ok, it is on us!! A shop with heart, something you just do not see these days. The selection is also quite good too.

Took my 2011 Garyfisher Mamba there for a simple front derailleur adjustment. 2 hrs later I got a call back saying my rear hub is loose. Okay, go ahead and tighten it. I ended up picking my bike up there at the end of the day from some 17 year old kid who claimed to have taken apart the whole rear hub and cleaned it. He had also mentioned the hub was some what warn and the extra free play in the wheel was fine. I wasnt able to figure out that was BS after riding my bike home. The shifting was a clicky and the bike just felt wrong. DO NOT TAKE YOUR BIKE TO SALEM CYCLE. I would have be better off flushing the 35 bucks I spent on. some 17 year old punk who had no idea what he was talking about and Brain is a moron.

I called Salem Cycle to see if they could repair and tune up my old bike. They said yes, and the guy on the phone was nice and polite, so I thought Id give them a try. When I got there, there was a salesman on the floor assisting a customer (the only customer in the store) and two people behind the counter working on bikes. I couldnt get anyone to help me or even acknowledge I was there. At one point, the woman behind the counter looked up, caught my eye and then turned back to what she was doing! Seriously, how about a "Ill be with you in just a minute" or "Could you come back in 10 minutes" or even "Sorry, we dont work here" if that was the case? After a few minutes of being COMPLETELY ignored, we just left.

Extremely versatile shop considering the relatively small space. They carry all kinds of bicycles (road, fixies, mountain, hybrids, bmx, etc) and are very knowledgeable about them all. I bought my first fixie here (Globe Roll 01), and the staff has been very helpful with all my mechanical and accessory questions Ive had since then. I brought my bike in after I stripped the thread on my fixed cog, and they came up with an excellent temporary fix so I can still ride while they wait for Specialized to handle the warranty.

We visited to pick up a water bottle and bell and the man filled my water bottle for me with some water. We then left to go to the Gulu Gulu. Once we were settled in there, the same man from the shop comes rushing in with a bag we had left in the store! What an awesome nice guy, really made our Salem trip better.

Great experience! I needed some parts to try and fix the rear hub on cheap, junker, yard sale bike and they were very helpful and took the time to rummage through to come up with the stuff I needed even though it was only a few $$$. Was so nice to not go to some chain or big box place. Shop local!!!

I walked in trying to buy a bike tire. The man behind the counter was very rude. After we got someone to help us the man sold us a six dollar tube for 12 bucks. After we drove away we looked at the bottom of the box and it said six bucks. He refuse to work on it because a liability issue.
