Big Y . My home away from home. ..if you count the average days per week I am present there. I admit I presently have genuine affection for this supermarket. When they refurbished (renovated? ..remodeled? I dont know, choose your term) the interior about a year ago, (and updated the façade sign) they made it even better. The redesign is in keeping with the modern trend towards the small, local grocery stand esthetic. Rustic looks and finishes show up in the produce section with fruits & vegetables displayed in baskets and stands augmented by wooden slat & crate effects. Colors correspond to departments (blue in seafood, green in produce, red in meats). New floors of varying warm tones were put down. They moved the flower shop across the way to make space for an all-natural/ organic foods area (which I really appreciate). This new area has lots of interesting, new options. In what was once part of the bakery now exists a seating area for dining or just resting. Free wifi is available throughout the store. The simple, illuminated register numbers were redesigned and now resemble streets gas lamp posts. Nice touch! The prepared foods section was expanded and a popular sushi counter was added right up front. I love the bread options for the excellent, made-to-order grinders! The rearrangement of the aisles left many (including myself) a tad befuddled for a while. I dont know that it makes better sense to me, the shopper, but Im sure that somewhere in the depths of consumer behavior studies lies justification for it. On rare occasion you might encounter some stone-face person, but overwhelmingly, the staff here is awesome, friendly and helpful. As friends, I definitely say hello and greet by name many of the employees when I visit. The feeling of the store is warm and social. Each time I go I wonder what familiar faces Im going to see. Complaints? Eh. A couple. Small ones, too. The area where one gets self-serve coffee seems cramped, sort of afterthought-ish. Necessities there arent terribly easy to reach. The trash barrel always seems to be somewhat in the way, and the coffee cup lids? Well...they suck. I count on a little spilt coffee, both on my hand and in my car, during my one mile trip to work from this location. And the deli? While otherwise excellent, is too frequently achingly slow. (is this a deli tradition? Its like this everywhere!). The register lines, in terms of speed, Id grade a 4 out of 5. They usually open a line when things are crawling, but not always. And that bell.... Do you know about the bell? Yeah ..theres a small dinner bell with a rope that people are encouraged to ring if they experienced good customer service. Why? I dont see this anywhere else. Its loud. I sympathize with the staff who work the registers near it. Some people ring it. Me? I hate it. Especially when Im walking by it and some frenzied kid is hysterically banging away at it. As much as I hate vandals, Id be inclined to look the other way if I spotted them snipping that rope. Small gripes aside, it must be said that Big Y has it down when it comes to service, professionalism, product offerings, environment (store comfort level, i.e., noise/quiet, climate control, cleanliness, fresh air, roominess), layout and store design. When a few powerful storms passed through this area a few years ago, knocking power out for many, I actually felt a little sadness when I saw the lights out during normal business hours (gratefully, they incorporated huge generators to open again as soon as was possible). Likewise, it was warming to see them back in after those storms. Big Y is not just a grocery retailer, they are an asset.

Im not sure if its the company in general but no matter what Big Y I go to the employees are extremely rude and unfriendly especially at the East Longmeadow store. I never get a greeting or any type of customer service other than I seem to be bothering them when I go to check out. The prices are ridiculously high and their so called buy 1 get 2 sales are a joke since they raise the cost of that one item buy a few bucks for just that sale. Ive always shopped at Big Y but I got sick of the attitudes and overpriced food so I checked out Stop and Shop and I am really glad I did. The prices are incredibly low always, the employees are personable and friendly, the employees at the deli know what it means when I say PAPER THIN and the store is never ever packed with Springfield people like Big Y. I can shop there with out having to wait in line for people to leave the isles just so I can grab an item. Big y needs a major makeover, reduced items and a cleaner parking lot. I also like that Stop and Shop gives free fruit to children. Big Y never gives anything caringly except a massive hole in your wallet.

Worst supermarket Ive ever been to. After wandering up and down the main aisle three times, I was unable to locate the bread since there wasnt a label for it on any of the hanging signs. On top of that, I didnt see it in any of the aisles while passing, so I then proceeded to ask an employee, who told me it was in aisle 4, only for me to get there to discover juice and diapers. Dont waste your time here. Went across the street to Stop N Shop and found the bread without any hiccups. In fact, they even had a sign for it! I absolutely refuse to wander around aimlessly looking for an everyday product that everyone uses. Prior to the remodel, such things were easy to locate. If I were to make a suggestion, Id hire a new planogramer who actually knows how to arrange the store in an effective manner.

After 25 years of shopping at BIG Y in East Longmeadow the store manager [Justin] sent me back to Stop&Shop across the street from Big Y in East Longmeadow to purchase Healthy Choice dinners due to the fact BIG Y DOES NOT PRICE MATCH. So I bought all my food there and will from now on. I spoke with the manger there and he told me they will PRICE MATCH BIG Y all day long. I had explained to Justin my 25 yrs of loyalty to Big Y and that I buy from Fresh Acres in Wilbraham also. He told me there was nothing he could due than to send me across the street to Stop&Shop and purchase them there. GOOD BYE BIG Y SUPER MARKETS. Business must be good.

I have been a customer here since Amys was next door. Every time I go I can always find what I need and even if I have to ask an associate for help! I am amazed at the renovation and how much more they now offer. From fresh house made sushi, to fresh baked goods from the bakery and Ive fallen in love with their fresh seafood and butcher shop options I cant get enough! Local produce is a big plus in supporting the community as well as a wide variety of diet options for those that need it. I prefer going here over any other market in the area (except local farmers markets of course). Cannot say anything bad about them at all!

What can I say you can go in there and get a fresh sandwich made or a hot slice of pizza, or do shopping and have everything for your home that you need. I especially like the meat department as Im a steak guy and the butchers always turn you on to the right cut of meat if you ask them and the seafood is pretty Killer 2
