In hopes of having the blade on my reel mower sharpened, I called the store to ask if they provided the service. I explained to the woman on the phone that it was a reel mower (non-gas powered). She said that they did offer to sharp these blades but that they would have to send it out of the store and that it would be $12. When I brought my blades in to be sharpened, Jerry, the manager/owner, sighed and explained that they didnt in fact offer that service any more. When I explained that the woman the phone said that they did, he sighed some more and made me feel as if I were imposing on his time rather than trying to conduct a reasonable business transaction. I asked him if he would sharpen the blades or not, and he said that he would, but it would take two weeks (it felt like something out of "Oh, brother, where art thou?"). I agreed and when the blades came in we were notified that the cost was $55--not $12. When I went to the store to explain that we had been told it would be $12, he explained to me that he had done me a favor in agreeing to have the blades sharpened at all and that I should have known that the $12 price quote I had been given on the phone applied to regular mower blades (even though I had specified that I was bringing in a reel mower). After a few more moments of Jerrys righteousness, I explained that I would pay his $55 and never shop in the store again. Still righteous, he gave me the blades for free and refused to take my money even though I insisted on paying. The entire experience was frustrating and embarrassing. Im amazed at the level of immaturity and unprofessionalism at the top of the store, when I had had so many positive experiences with the rest of the staff over the years. My wife and I easily spent thousands of dollars in that store over the years, and preferred it to the other big home improvement stores, both for convenience and on principle. No more. We will not patronize Strosniders of Silver Spring again.

Came in today to return a citronella torch which wouldnt light and was told by the manager that I must not have purchased the item at Strosniders because he didnt recognize it. I had purchased the last 4 of these items about 3 weeks ago and, apparently, they havent restocked them...hence, he claimed they didnt sell them (but, believe me, I bought the item at Strostniders). When I asked if they could at least give me a new wick for the torch, they said I had to pay for it. Nice to stand by the merchandise you sell. Now, keep in mind that I have been a loyal Strosniders customer since they opened more than 5 years ago...I have probably spent a few thousand dollars there (including a new Weber gas grill and several other pricier items). When I explained this to the manager, he couldnt have possibly cared less...choosing to focus on his need to charge me for a $6 tiki torch wick and accuse me of trying to put one over on them rather than standing by the merchandise they sold me and treating me as a valued customer who has dropped un-Godly sums of money in their store. In the end, I told them I wouldnt be coming back and would take every opportunity to tell people I know not to shop there either. Dont let the small town feel of this place fool you--these guys are out to make a buck and take advantage of you, just like the big box places. If you shop there, keep your receipt.

I stopped in with my two young children to purchase some birdseed to make holiday ornaments. Three sales associates passed me and without saying hello or offering help, as we were unfamiliar where the item might be located. When we finally did, the price tags seemed jumbled and upon checking out I realized that was not the bag I needed. I said to the older woman who was ringing up our purchase "I though I grabbed the $8.99 bag, the pricing is a bit confusing," and she snidely responded "Well its 13.99." I said, in a kinder tone, "The items on that aisle are mislabeled, and I couldnt find anyone to help me but I would prefer the cheaper bag," and her response again was "Well, its 13.99." I stood there for a second looking at her and then said "Okay, well then Ill go ahead and go back and try to figure out which one it is." At this point our young son was getting tired and started to cry. Three more associates passed me as I explained to our four year old daughter that I was having trouble finding the right product. Still, no help. We took our business elsewhere but I would highly suggest to people in the customer service industry to seek another field if they do not, in fact, want to help their customers.

This was my first visit to the Silver Spring branch and I believe that I will not return. When I entered the store I asked where a particular item was located and the employee directed me to the aisle. As I was walking to the aisle I heard an announcement asking for customer assistance in the aisle I was headed to. I thought someone was coming to give me some assistance, but I soon found out that that was not the case. The employee who came simply stood at the end of the aisle and watched what I was doing. My guess is he was making sure I didnt steal anything because if he was actually there to help me why wouldnt he come up to me and ask me if I needed some help? This entire experience was very uncomfortable and humiliating for me. I was annoyed that both employees decided that I looked like I was a thief. My look isnt going to change anytime soon, so I can only assume that this treatment will be repeated. Even though they appear to be well stocked with decent prices I cannot return there to be treated the same way.

Ive been to this store numerous times and every time someone asks, within a minute, if I need assistance. Big contrast to having to hunt someone down in Home Depot. The clerks know where everything is and know their stuff. If Im looking for screws, nails etc. I just hand a clerk a sample and get what I need handed to me immediately. I also got a great briefing on humidifiers and ended up with one of the best models Ive ever owned. Id much rather pay a little more than the warehouse store for the premium service. The only con, if you can call it that, is the parking. Strosniders shares a parking lot with Whole Foods and parking can be a challenge during WFs peak hours. Highly recommend.

Youd think a hardware store would be open shortly after a big snowstorm, but Strosniders was not open, and did not even post a sign as to when theyd reopen. This is the only place in downtown SS that sells shovels, salt, etc. The CVS next door was open, so why not Stros? On a normal visit, they have a decent selection, though most (but not all) staff there are unfriendly and unhelpful. If I need help, I often have trouble finding an available staff member, and when I do, most of the time they just tell me approximately where to find something instead of actually showing me. Their prices are always higher (sometimes substantially) than Home Depot or Lowes. Disappointing.
