After trying to sell my vehicle at carmax I was insulted by the offer they gave me. They couldve bought my vehicle at trade in value and still made a $2500 profit. But instead they wanted to make a $6500 profit. Now the consumers rate the carmax buying experience pretty good and they boast on being the best dealership 20 years running. But that is only because the no hassle pricing. However it is clear that most consumers arent educated enough on car buying experience. The only reason that they seem to be decently priced is because they rip you off on your trade or if they buy your vehicle. So they are making a tremendous profit. Probably more of a profit than most dealerships. Dont let them fool you with there tricky sales lingo. "We would like to buy your car today". Or "we will handle all the paper work". And many other phrases used to make you feel comfortable with the big mistake your about to make. Trust me Ive been in sales and customer service for all my life. And used to work at a dealership as well. Do your homework. It might take a little more time but trust me when I tell you sell the vehicle yourself. This is what Im talking about. My cargo van in good condition is worth $17000 and excellent condition $18000. Fair condition $16000. It would retail for $18500 at carmax or more. My vehicle is in good condition and a highly sought after vehicle for its condition and low miles. It is a 2010 ford e250 flex fuel v8. It only has 36500 miles on it. Selling it my self took a little time not much but sold for $16000. Carmax wanted to give me $12000. I would have lost $4000 dollars. Whether it be from impatience, impulse, or just excited to buy a new car a lot of customers make the mistake of just signing it over. Can you imagine if I was buying a new car or used what $4000 more of a deposit would significantly change your payment. Or if your buying for cash an extra 4 grand in my pocket. I am not big on writing reviews or complaining. Ive actually only done it twice in my life. But when I see something like this I have to. So many people are taken advantage of and are so excited for their new car, they give away theirs for pennys on the dollar. Please folks do your homework. I cant stress it enough. I understand is easier to let them handle the paperwork but not for $4000 of my money. Dont be apart of the band wagon. Good luck folks.

Rant Title: Crapity Crap ....So I purchased my car in 2011. To date I have had to have major, and I mean major work done on this lemon of a car. Theres so much I cant even get into it on here. Not to mention the awful customer services from this putrid excuse for a business. Now on to the current hot mess I had to endure. The engine went (10/28/13). Well apparently it went when in Carmax hands, who decided to replace it with a junk yard engine. Total cost: $2,259.41. Thank God I purchased that max car warranty. Still I was out of a car for 16 days. Yes. thats right 16 days. If I could shout it from the mountain tops I would, "I HATE CARMAX!!!!!" hate is such a strong word. I shouldnt stoop to their level. Im sure the...technician... that put that crap engine in my car probably had pressure from upper level management to cut costs or whatever, and that upper level management, had even more pressure...blah blah blah. So okay, perhaps I dont hate Carmax, but definitelyextremely dislike. Also, I would never EVER EVER recommend them to anyone. EVER. Ive seriously mulled over handing out fliers in front of this place warning of the crap that lurks behind that big blue and yellow. Whoever reads this, listen, please. Do not DO not buy a car from here. Im a real person, this a real experience. Run do not walk to your nearest exit. Further, might I add, some might say, "meh, you bought a bad car," (as stated by the manager at this location to me, yes to my face). Its not like Im a bad person, or a rich person. Im a social worker. I work so hard with kids who have disabilities. I need my car for work. More over, i dont have a whole lot of money or time to deal with this. Carmax, I dont hate you. I pity you. I forgive you, for falling into what so many have: GREED. I have one word Carmax: Karma. I wish that I could build a time machine and magically never have this horrible experience. But experience is the best teacher, so thanks Carmax for the only thing I could possibly say thank you about when it comes to this crapy company; a valuable lesson: that there are greedy crap businesses who dont give two craps about the crap they make and will let you spend your good hard earned money and not think twice. Also, sometimes people are just plain ole mean for no freakin reason at all. Well now, I feel better :)

UPDATE: After this experience, the manager reached out to me personally to make it right. They sent me a voucher for a free oil change, which we agreed on over the phone would be sufficient. I have increased the rating. Car Buying As It SHOULDNT Be. We booked a 12pm test drive. It was 1pm before we were taken to the lot to find the car. The drive was short and strictly dictated turn by turn by the service agent. I had to tell her at one point that I wasnt done testing it and I needed to pull over to try the 4x4 options. She even seemed surprised that I wanted to pop the hood. Sad thing is, everything started off well. I received a call from a rep confirming our appointment and car type. I was excited. When we got to the store we were acknowledged but waited five minutes or so to talk to the person who called me. He then told me I should go to the auto service waiting area as it might take 10-15 minutes to find someone to help me. And here I thought he was the one scheduled to help me. After 20+ minutes of waiting we were greeted by a replacement rep who thought I was there for a car appraisal. We told her we had a reservation to test drive a very specific car. It took another 10 minutes to find our reservation in the system and for her to get the information from me they wanted. Then she went to scan my license, but its an out of state license (Active Duty Military) so it required a managers approval, add another 7 minutes. At this point we were ready to walk away. We had timed our visit to allow us to test drive the vehicle and keep our 6 month old happy. She wasnt enjoying the wait either. Once we found the car, it was dirty. Cigarette holes in the upholstery and French fries in the door panel. Just not a great impression. Whats most frustrating is Im not sure I didnt love the car. I think it was probably a fair price and maybe was even the right car for our family but it took so long to even see the vehicle by the time the test drive was over we were ready to go and get the frustration behind us. Not going back. First and last experience at CarMax.
