Since beginning to shop here years ago as we slowly weened off Hannafords and learned to shop effectively at Whole Foods (it can be a bit scary at first), we have seen a significant increase in our overall health. I feel this is mostly due to the high quality meat (grass fed, local when possible, no hormones, organic high quality feed and feeding pastures, humane treatment, etc.) and dairy they sell, but also the large variety of organically grown fruits and vegetables. We have also been able to find Whole Food based supplements (non-synthetic). There is a core group of long term Whole Foods staff that are truly wonderful personalities and incredibly helpful and knowledgeable. We feel they are like extended family to us and always look forward to chatting with them when possible. The store has been fairly consistent in what it carries, however weve been discouraged by a few favorites disappearing without notice. This is the only frustration we tend to face at this store. Ill give them the benefit of doubt in that they are a very progressive store and always attempting to stay cutting edge with providing food, so this could be part of the reason for discontinuation of items on a fairly regular basis. Checkout lines can get backed up (WF needs to work on quick reactions to flow better and open registers) often and parking lot is a bit tight. Prices on some items can be a bit stretched (same items at Hannafords), so be aware. But ....with that said, we are always pleasantly surprised to find new and exciting things to try .. the cheese selection is crazy good .. beer selection is outstanding .... best Chicken (Bell & Evans) on the planet .. love that we can get 100% grass fed beef and on occasion locally raised pork ...we always look forward to the amazing Icelandic Lamb (seasonal) .... and if you want a great treat, there prepared food is super tasty and generally healthy. Last, but not least .... there Pizza is the closest I can find to a New Jersey pie, so this helps us out not being homesick. No offense to Maine, but this State needs to learn how to make Pizza and bagels. I still have not found a decent bagel. WF Pizza however, dare I say it, is better than NJ pie. There .. I said it. Thanks the Gods for Whole Foods Portland Maine. Wed be lost without you.

My husband and I are vegan (and I am gluten-free). We purchase ONLY organic, animal-cruelty free food and household products. We also live on a tight budget which only allows us $50 - $100 per week for groceries (thats including our vitamins, bathroom and cleaning products and pet products). Since Whole Foods opened, we have been loyal shoppers. They have everything we need for our dietary restrictions. The myth of "Whole Paycheck" is asinine! Shop the specials (I get them on the website before I shop) and clip the coupons out of the Whole Deal flier. I have walked out of there with 7 days of groceries for $37. Customers that label the store expensive are getting prepared foods, gelato, pastries, snacks, alcohol. Basically, theyre impulse shoppers. I have recently done a shop at Hannafords and I paid the same, if not more, for my usual products (and they have a very limited selection). As far as Dars comments on customer service... go to Shaws where they have two lanes open, they ignore you, throw your groceries down the belt and make you bag yourself. Better yet, go to Walmart and tell me how your experience was. The customer service at Whole Foods cannot be beat. You can tell they are a tight-knit group, which makes them work well together. And Querelle... accidents happen. Who hasnt been overcharged at a grocery store? The store is clean, the food is fresh and the employees are willing to try to accommodate ANY request. Thank you, Whole Foods.

The cafe has a scene to it, but it always busy sometimes even crowded. Free Wifi, but the male bathroom is small, only 2 stalls and most always full thus. There is only 2 outlets so there is fierce competition to use them and almost always taken. And recently they have posted a sign saying that there is a maximum of 1 hour sit at the outlet table. The food is delicious, it is prepared outright if you want it, or you can buy from the shelves and heat it in the microwave provided. There comes only a richer crowd, so that is a Big Plus, BUT.... you pay there a price for, with this comes the drawback of their prices are SKY HIGH, if you want to live in America and soar like an eagle, you must be prepared to pay High. Lol.... The service is not bad, the girls at the counters are almost always smiling, but for the prices you pay you can expect that 5 star service, and besides, they get most likely big paycheck. But all in all its not bad... If you are rich OR you bring your own food from home to eat. * I only sit in the cafe.

The Whole Foods in Portland is a large store with many fine products. They have a fine meat counter with meats, smoked in store. They have all the expected healthy alternatives to meat, dairy and even baked goods as well as a full service bakery with some real indulgences. Fancy cakes and cookies, suitable for entertaining. They have hot and cold food bars as well as counter served foods; sushi, pizza, sandwiches and a coffee bar. They have a place to sit and eat, though its a bit crowded up against the front of the store. They have mobility carts. The store can get quite crowded, despite its size. In addition to the food items they have a nice section for wine and beer, a good produce section and a health and beauty section that my wife likes to shop. The store is located near Trader Joes, the traffic is a bit heavy, but the stores are accessible and parking is more than adequate. This is another store I wouldnt mind coming to Bangor.

It shocked me that the smell of this store is identical to the smell of its California counter parts lol uncanny. Anyways, I went in the other day and wish I had hours to spend researching their shelves and talking recipes with the employees. Their food is prices fairly but their bathroom products, oils and such a very pricey. Were not on a budget and I was still taken aback by the prices. Im sure its perfectly normal for it to be around 11$ for essence of eucalyptus, It was just my first experience. Another thing I REALLY dont like about this store is its location, Its horrible getting in and out of here. I live in the woods and loath the city so I have to practically meditate before I go so I wont turn into that horribly cranky stranger no one wants to get near. Other then those two complaints I love it =]
