I brought in a damaged ring and received an estimate of $85-100 for the repair. About a week later, I received a call that the ring was ready for me to pickup, but that the repair actually cost them $310 or so. They asked if I would be willing to meet in the middle at $175 or so. Of course I wouldnt be willing to pay 85-105% above the estimate! Especially since they followed through with a repair of that magnitude without consulting me. I went to the shop and pointed out these two facts (hugely irresponsible estimate AND failure to contact me with the news). Eventually they admitted to the extent of the error, but its as though they hadnt even thought that through all the way. We settled on $125, since I had to have the ring and I felt that was a fair price, but still, what a half-assed job. Oh....and they didnt even put the ring in a ring box! I got it in a manilla envelope! I felt no sense of their interest in me as a customer, or sense that theyre responsibly running their business.
