My wife and I were leaving the mall one Sunday afternoon when we spotted Petland Chicago Ridge. We heard rumors about Petland and their affiliation with puppy mills but decided to check it out anyway. As soon as we walked in, we were greeted by a kind sales associate who, without asking, brought out an adorable puppy. She then insisted we play with the pup inside a cubicle. Needless to say, we were thrilled! So far, so good! After a lengthy and scripted sales pitch, we were told the price was $1700 - $1800. I cant remember exactly because I blacked out when I heard "thousand". Forgive my sarcasm, but really!? Sensing our dissatisfaction, the sales girl recommended I apply for their high interest financing. Theres no way in hell I would pay that much for a dog even with a payment plan! Ok, so I had to ask the sales associate.... "Where exactly are your puppies from again?" She replied, "Our puppies come from USDA breeders." I assume she forgot to say "inspected". I then asked for more info and to my surprise she handed me a booklet containing the breeders name and address. It seemed legit at first. On a hunch, I did a quick google search on my phone to see if I could locate more details on this breeder. Now heres the shocking part.................................. The dog WAS from a puppy mill! The name of the puppy mill is Heritage Puppies. Heritage Puppies is a notorious puppy mill located in the Midwest. Heritage Puppies manufactures dogs on a massive scale and houses them in filthy, disgusting cages. These dogs are essentially slaves whose sole purpose is to reproduce for greedy pet shop owners. I couldnt believe it! THE RUMORS WERE TRUE! Petland doesnt necessarily hide that their puppies are born in puppy mills. Instead, they depend on uninformed customers who fall for their deceptive sale pitch. Petland confuses customers by advertising that their breeders are "USDA Inspected". This is misleading because it implies the dogs are bred humanely. If you ask they will provide the name and address of the breeder. However, a simple google search will unveil the dirty details they obviously dont want you to know. Theres an organization targeting Petland Chicago Ridge because of its strong ties to well known puppy mills. Please Google "The Puppy Mill Project".The Puppy Mill Project has uploaded official documents on their website that reveal Petland Chicago Ridge does in fact source their pups from unethical breeders. Theres no denying it. The paper trail speaks for itself. This is public information so please do your research. Unfortunately some states (especially in the Midwest) currently lack the proper laws needed to protect these animals. As of April 2015, puppy mills can legally operate in the United States with the USDAs blessing. Petland can legally obtain their puppies from well known puppy mills and resell them to YOU.......the unsuspecting customer! Despite the overwhelming evidence, Petland still denies that their puppies are born in puppy mills. UNLESS YOU WANT BLOOD ON YOUR HANDS, STAY AWAY FROM PETLAND CHICAGO RIDGE!!!!!!!!!!!!

I worked here for several months. The last straw for me was actually witnessing a puppy die from a respiratory infection/heart failure. Thats right, a poor puppy actually sat in the back kennel for three days suffering- we had to hand feed it and finally after the puppy couldnt even choke down the water we were giving it via syringe the owner took it to the vet and it was dead within I think 2 days. Some of the puppies that are brought to the store by the "USDA approved breeders" are so sick we were asked to reject them. Almost every single puppy that was at the store was being treated for some kind of ailment...respiratory infections, kennel cough, and giardia were very common. I was absolutely disgusted once I learned that we would send these puppies home with customers and not tell them anything about the puppy being sick. You had to take the puppy in to see a vet within 5 days or else you would void the warranty so it was assumed that the vet would see what was wrong and then provide the puppy with treatment. On top of that, the owner of this location is crazy. He is verbally abusive to the employees. If we dont bring out a puppy for a customer then we get "disciplined". A customer can say "NO, I dont want to buy a puppy" or even flat out say they dont want to SEE a puppy but we are supposed to still bring one out for them and if we dont theres hell to pay. He figures that if we get a customer in the booth with a puppy they will fall in love and end up buying one anyway. Also, you can ask to see the paperwork on the puppies but a lot of the information is falsified anyways. Most of the registries that these puppies have are B.S.

I purchased 2 dogs from this store in the past 3 months. I am absolutely in love with both of my Pomeranian puppies! This store makes it easy to purchase a puppy and leave with all of the supplies needed to take care of them. The staff is somewhat knowledgeable when it comes to breed personality and taking care of your new puppy. However, it is important to know going in that their prices are high and their dogs always have kennel cough. Save yourself some money and order your cage and necessities on amazon. They will cover the vet bills for the kennel cough as long as you make it to the vet in the first 5 days. Plan on keeping any pets you already have separated from the new pet for at least a week while clearing the kennel cough. Last time I was there I saw a heeler with diarrhea while the shitzu above him was puking bile. Their pet food is not high quality. Use the bag they give you to get your dog comfortable and then slowly switch them over to something with less filler. In my experience, the staff did not understand/explain the contract well enough for a first time pet owner to grasp. My 6 month old puppy is thriving and loving life! My 11 week old puppy is happy to have a home, but not feeling 100% himself yet. They do need to make larger strides in health safety for their dogs. Each dog needs their own toy rather than sharing all of them. The dogs need to be treated with antibiotics upon showing signs of kennel cough rather than waiting for someone to purchase them and take care of it later.

My girlfriend and I were looking for the perfect puppy and had played with many at Petland. None was quite right for us, but we continued to visit with hope that the next trip would yield that perfect pup. Once we met the owner and he was friendly, telling us to come to him if we wanted to see a puppy. That all changed drastically tonight. Upon asking to play with a shih tzu, he told us, verbatim, that we were wasting his time and asked how many we would need to see before buying one. Clearly this man has never gone through the tough process of choosing a dog and is completely inconsiderate of those who are going through it. He cares only about selling dogs as products, not ensuring that they go to careful owners or that customers find a dog thats right for them. Hell be happy to accommodate you as long as he thinks hes going to get a sale, but look a little too long and hell tell you frankly that youre not welcome anymore. Buy or get out. Needless to say, we will never return and will ensure that everyone we know finds out how heartless this guy is. I had always looked past the outrageous prices and snaky selling practices (most dogs prices are not available unless requested, and only then after a protracted sales pitch), but tonight was the last straw. Its sad to see so many helpless animals in this mans care, but do not buy from this store and please dont recommend it to any of your friends.
