Shady business practices: Home-Tech, Totally took advantage of my 95 year old mother. I write this because I really believe that Home-Tech ripped off my 95 year old mother. Their unfair and shady business practices show their real character and what they think about their customers. My mom who has actually been a long term customer of Home-Tech and has done business with them for many years. She recently needed a new home air conditioner and purchased it from the people who she had been doing business with over many years, Home-Tech. After a year and a half the air conditioner broke down. Of course right after the warranty ran out. Well OK, parts are covered, we just have to pay the labor to replace the MAJOR COMPONENTS (Blower motor and Module) of her air handler, the part of the unit that is in the attic. Here is where the shady part comes into play. Their first trip was to diagnose the problem and they charged her by charging her a trip charge, $159.00 and then so much, $35 for every 15 minutes thereafter. Again OK it was after hours and it is the middle of July (2017) but it still wound up being $194.00 to tell her that they sold her something defective. They spent a total of 35 minutes at her house FOR $195.00. That includes arriving, set up, diagnosis, and paperwork and clean up, everything 35 minutes, $195.00. Now that they know what’s wrong they say it was going to be another $389.00 to replace the defective blower motor and the module. So that was kinda of a hard pill to swallow considering of the age of the unit, but it was the middle of July and my 95 year old mother needed air condition. So OK (again) go ahead. We talked and I picture the tech coming to her home and having to work in the furnace of the attic, struggling to replace the motor. With their service rates are $159.00 trip charge and $35.00 for every fifteen minutes thereafter. I figure the price is so high because he is going to have to spend a couple of hours up there. BOY WAS I WRONG!! He spent just 10 minutes repairing her unit and 20 minutes on everything else (set up, clean up and paperwork) so $389.00 for 30 minutes!!! So I called. I was not able talk to anybody but I was able to leave a message for the Service Manager, Ryan Thibaudeau and waited for a call back. Well no call back that day so I decided to go by the office to discuss my concerns. I was able to speak to Ryan and he apologized that he was too busy to call me back but we could talk about my concerns. I asked for his help in understanding the charges and maybe some assistance for my 95 year old mother who has been a long term customer of theirs. We spoke about what happened and all of a sudden it changed from hourly rates to a Flat Rate to change the parts. That was the first time anybody said anything about the change of rate from trip/hourly to flat rate. Really $389.00 for 30 minutes of work. Well not really, again we need to talk about set up, clean up and paperwork. My mother said he was in the attic for less than 10 minutes. If someone, anyone had said it was a flat rate charge of $389.00 for the work So I waited for Ryan to call back. The next day goes by and I guess Ryan is too busy to call me back again. At the end of the next day Ryan called me back and said he had talked to Tom Rohde the General Manager and they decided that there was nothing they would do about their charges and that the charges would stand. I told him I was unhappy and his response was to tell me that the President of Home-Tech thinks they did not charge her enough… What? Really? Didn’t charge her enough? What kind of business are they running here? I dare say if they would do that type of business practice to my 95 year old mother, they are doing it to others too. Buyer Beware!! Home-Tech is Shady and should not be trusted. Shame on you Home-Tech. Do not do business with this shady company, but if you do don’t let them rip you off like they did my 95 year old mother.

*****3/23/17 Another great Home-Tech experience, thanks to Michael B (#869), who was efficient, helpful, and personable when replacing a part in my old icemaker. I dont know how Home-Tech manages to hire such great people ALL the time, but keep up the good work. Just wish H-T would expand into Georgia and/or Illinois! I love giving my business to an employee-owned company. Plus, my family in those places deserve the great service and comfort of a Home-Tech contract for their homes too. Thanks Mike, for a great job!! *****9/26/16 Wow! Home Tech always delivers great service but Alfy (#859) is the best so far! Since I accidentally missed my yearly A/C check-up last year, he had his work cut out for him today. He was awesome - cleaned 2 years of gunk from my drain & the roof-top unit, and was smiling & cheerful the whole time. He did so much more than just take a look & routinely clean my unit. If anyone owns a home and doesnt avail themselves of Home Techs annual service contract, you are missing out on a great bargain. More importantly, you will have wonderful peace of mind. And when a technician DOES come - whether for a routine or a not-so-routine reason, you will bless the day you spent the $$ to do it. Great service, reasonable price, wonderful peeps, and - an employee-owned company! *****3/11/16 - Another day, another issues solved! This time, Cannon was the tech who came in and fixed my broken icemaker in just a few minutes. It is sooooo comforting to know that HomeTechs awesome service people spring into action - competently, politely, and quickly - whenever I need them. Get yourself a contract and put your mind at ease! ******2016 - I love Home-Tech, and their people are a big reason why! Omar (#844) did NOT have an easy task in my aging townhouse, with both a garbage disposal that had died, and a water heater that (unbeknownst to me!) was on its last legs. What probably appeared to be a fairly easy and quick job turned into a pair of long, and not easy, tasks. I know all too well how hard it sometimes is to fit modern conveniences into little old-fashioned spaces, but Omar was up to the job and "worked around" as needed. I now have a new garbage disposal and am soon to be the proud owner of a new water heater. I appreciate his patient answers to my questions, and the extra time he took to be certain he was on the right track with a somewhat unfamiliar situation. I am deeply appreciative, and if I needed a reminder of WHY I renew my contract each year, I certainly had it today. Thank you, Home-Tech, for providing a dependable service that we many times THINK we dont need - until we DO. :) *****PS - Water heater now replaced by another wonderful Home-Tech service person - sorry I didnt remember his name.

Have had Hometech for eight years and been happy with them for most of the time. Recently they seem to be nickel and dime. Two years ago the raised my contract over $300 due to the age of my appliances and HVAC (btw in the prior four years I had one service call for a bad capacitor on the a/c compressor. I understood game value determinations and since we were doing some upgrades replaced; total HVAC, refrigerator, range, dishwasher, microwave, washer and dryer. Every major covered appliance. They took $70 off the contract cost which had risen $300 in three years. Fuzzy math. In the last six months have been told three times " that is not covered under normal service contract." I understand limits, however; 1. A kitchen faucet broke. It was not covered. I said I would buy one and was told we only cover minor leaks and leaking toilets. Putting in a faucet that you buy is a minimum of $150 extra. If they supplied the faucet it was estimated at $450 to $600. A fifteen minute drive to Home Depot and a half hour and the cost was $89. The second time was denied was an electric outlet that was a dual outlet for a ceiling fan and light. That was a "specialty item and install", switch was $8.97 at Home Depot and ten minutes to install. Last was about another electric issue that I was not comfortable with so asked a neighbor who is more competent than me. Took him five minutes and he laughed that a student at a vocational school could have fixed after his first two weeks. It took a lot of tools and skill, a screwdriver to take a plate off, and two wire nuts. As I said I like Hometech but am getting increasingly frustrated that they ask for hundreds of dollars a year for their Gold Program, but seem to have a reason to deny services and try to charge extra. Not sure I am resigning. I expressed my concern to their contracts department and was told "sorry you are not happy, please feel free to contact us in the future if you reconsider." The odd thing was I had not canceled and was only asking questions about prices. Her attitude was I am busy and dont have a desire to work to keep business. Hopefully they will get back to their core values and the way they used to be. .
