To be frank, I have had a terrible (and ongoing) experience with Carmax. The first problem was their financing. I have an almost 800 credit score (my wife has well over 700 as well) and an excellent income to debt ratio. Nonetheless, they tried to give us a 9% APR auto-loan for 60 months. Terrible. I went with our credit union at 2.6%. Secondly, I paid $199 to have my car shipped from L.A. to Fairfield, CA (few hundred miles), which I was guaranteed would arrive within 10 days. The next day I received an email that it had been shipped and would arrive in 2-3 days. 3 days later I called and was told it would be there "any day." 3 days after that I called and was told the same thing, then again on the 9th day. On the 10th day I called and, after waiting on hold and asking for a manager, found out that they had SHIPPED THE WRONG CAR. They told me that I would get my $199 back, but that they didnt know when my car would arrive. I asked for a manager and insisted that the car be expedited (I was borrowing my sisters car and/or paying for rental cars in the meantime, as I was assured I would have my new car by this point). The manager guaranteed that the car would be expedited and let me know that there was nothing else they could do (lower cost of car, etc.). Long story short, the car WAS NOT EXPEDITED and did not arrive for another 7 days. At this point they threw in a $25 service voucher, which seemed less than adequate to say the least. Next, my wife and I waited a few more days for the car to be washed and prepped (11 days after the original guaranteed date at this point) and went to purchase the car. I thought I was finally done with the headache of an experience that this had been, but fortunately before we drove off I checked the trunk for the vehicle charger (hybrid plug-in vehicle). THERE WAS NO CHARGER to be seen. They apologized and said they would order one and have it sent to my house immediately. Thank goodness I checked before we left, because who knows if they would have given us one. (You would think they would check for the charger as part of their 125 point inspection???) That was 10 days ago and I still do not have the charger. I was assured that I would be called the following Monday with an exact delivery date and was not called. I called last Tuesday and spoke to Walter (service) who assured me that the charger was sent and would arrive to my house this past Friday 10/21/16. On Friday afternoon I received a call that the charger has arrived TO THE DEALERSHIP and they wanted to know where I wanted them to send it. I explained the experience I had had and received not so much as an apology. Again, I still have not received the charger. Hopefully this will all be over soon!! Having said all of that, I have felt throughout this process that Carmax is actually a good company and that I am just been having a horribly unlucky experience, but nonetheless, this is my experience and this is what reviews are for. Good luck,

Ive recommended CarMax to all my friends and family and anyone who will take the time to listen to me! In my lifetime, Ive bought 5 cars from dealerships, and my experience at CarMax was BY FAR the best experience Ive ever had. Even before you get to the lot, their website is clean and organized and the photos they put up make it easy for you to shop around their different lots without making the drive there. But when you get to the lot its even better. Their lobbies are clean and spacious with a beverage counter. The employees are welcoming and friendly and theyre not dressed in stuffy suits yet professional enough to know that you are in a place of business. I was impressed from the first step in the lobby. Getting to my favorite part of this experience: Nicole Peterson, my sales consultant. I came to her from a really bad experience at another dealership. Her welcoming manner immediately put me at ease. She was upfront, honest, and incredibly friendly. She really took care of me and difficult situation I was in at the time. She made sure that all my needs and expectations were met and she was very transparent and knowledgeable about the financial aspect of not only the loan I chose, but also about the VERY affordable extended warranty that CarMax offers. (Ive always opted out of purchasing extended warranties in the past because Ive always felt as though they were just trying to get more money out of me.) The prices were reasonable and the deductibles, which made it easy for me to purchase it for my peace of mind. The part I really liked is that CarMax doesnt have a "financial officer" that sits in a separate office and you sit and wait for that person to call around all over the place to find a loan for you with a good rate. At CarMax it is transparent as transparent can be! They dont even turn the computer monitor to face only them. Everything is done in front of you! CarMax works with 10 banks and you get the status back almost instantaneous, and you can choose the loan. I was really impressed with that. Nicole walked me through the whole process all the way to signing the paperwork with the finance dept. She even had my truck cleaned while everything was happening! Thank you CarMax and Nicole for making this whole experience stress free for me! Im a CarMax fan and will definitely be back for another purchase in the future!

I ended up with a great car and my buying experience went very smoothly... But wait... Then why 3 stars might you ask? Well my buying went smoothly mainly because I did my own research before getting there. Also, all of my financing went through my bank. I requested the car to be transferred from stockton to fairfield (about an 1-1.5 hours away). I received little updates during this process and had to call to get updates on my car. After I bought my car a few of my warning lights came on (oil, fluids, etc.). They had no problem taking a look at my fluids and told me if any other problems occurred to bring it back and theyd take a look. Well a few weeks later my oil light came on again after being just 1,000 miles from its last change. So I take my car back to carmax. The mechanic they had there working on site said that the settings just needed to be reset. Ok no problem. .. That was until I watched him click around on the settings that can be viewed and adjusted on my cars screen. He had no clue what he was doing. At all. I had previously read up on some trouble shooting for my car (needed to know what I was getting myself into before purchase). After it was quite clear he had no clue what he was doing, and after making adjustments to settings that didnt need to be touched. The mechanic proceeded to look up on YOUTUBE (yes youtube) how to adjust the settings. He didnt bother to check the manual inside the car, no instead he went to youtube.. I could have done that. But lucky my car was still under dealership warranty so after the mechanic at carmax "fixed" my settings (the light remained on even after I drove off), I called my local dealer. They told me right over the phone how to adjust the settings. Now I know carmax deals with MANY different brands on cars but come on, If you have bmws, range rovers, and benz on your lot then higher mechanics that are familiar with those types of cars. Otherwise dont offer service to the types of vehicles you cant suppose. So if your car has any form of a smart system do not take your car to carmax. Spend your money getting maintenance at the actual dealer.
