This is a complain we filed on unacceptable customer service at Food Lion store located at 20789 Great Falls Plaza, Sterling, VA 20165. On Nov. 16, 2012 at about 2PM my wife and I visited the Food Lion store to receive a Western Union transfer. At the customer service desk we saw an employee who was decorating a small Christmas tree. She saw us but kept on decorating the tree. I had to call her asking for assistance. It looked like she did not want to serve us saying that she did not have $200 we were to receive. We asked her to looked into the cashier register to see if the money were available. She did not look happy with my request and reluctantly looked into the register. The money was there. At this point she appeared like looking for ways to find a pretext not to serve us. With unfriendly look she took from us the WU receiving money form and started checking the computer system to verify information. She verified with us a transaction number, the receiving party name and address, and amount of transaction, and the country the money was sent from. All the information was correct. Then the employee told us that we had put down a wrong spelling of the sender’s name. She said that we had misspelled THREE letters of the sender’s last name and refused to release the money. We had to go across the plaza to Rite Aid and within two minutes we received the money transferred to us through WU. We spoke with the Western Union over the phone and they did not even ask the sender’s last name. The WU gave us a receipt showing that we had misspelled in Food Lion just ONE letter of the sender’s name, which was not a problem for releasing the money. We returned back to the Food Lion with the WU receipt, showed it to the employee and asked her to find THREE misspelled letters she had used as a pretext to refuse serving us. Instead of apologizing the employee started screaming saying that we called her “stupid.” My wife and I were in shock because she kept on lying looking right into our eyes. We asked her to provide us the name of her boss. In response she called the police saying that we are calling her stupid. Of course, police did not arrive. Despite our repeated requests the employee has not given us the name of her boss. As we could see on her budge, the employee’s name is Claudia Chavez. My wife and I have been faithful customers of the Food Lion store for about five years and we have always been very pleased with the service of polite and professional employees. We were shocked by the way we were treated by Claudia Chavez. She was unprofessional and very rude, almost hostile. The misspelled letters is not an issue. We believe the problem is that the employee was in the mood not to serve customers. She was looking for pretext to deny the service and made up the reason for that. When caught lying she lost self control and became almost hostile. We will never return shopping to the Food Lion as long as Claudia Chavez works there and we will contact our friends and neighbors suggesting them not to shop there ever again. Yelena and Yuri

Why this place is still in business is beyond me. Theyve been there for more than 20 years and have already been shut down for bleaching their chicken, then re-opening under the name Bloom for 10 years, then back to Food Lion. Everywhere else I look theyre opening Harris Teeter, Wegmans and even Walmart grocery, all of which trounce Food Lion in every sense of the word. Everyday I wake up, and on my way to work theres this hope that maybe, just maybe theres going to be a closing sign strapped in yellow tape across the front of the building, and next to it, a billboard that reads Wholefoods Opening Soon. (sigh) One can only hope.

This is a really good grocery store if you live immediately nearby as it is convenient. However if you dont live nearby, then you might as well go to another grocery store as this one is small with not too much interesting food to offer. The interior is nice, as they renovated it when it changed names, but its back to Food Lion now.

Not a huge selection of various foods like Giant has. Place feels very disheartening even though theres no actual bad vibes. Probably due to the staff never seeming happy there or willing to help with anything.
