Purchased a REI branded backpack, the seam has come un-stiched on the top of the pack. The pack is in great shape otherwise. Contacted REI about their product and brought it into the store as requested, simply to be denied any repair or prorating towards another pack; I was offered 20% off a new backpack. The "great products with an outstanding warranty" sales pitch with "100% satisfaction guarantee" is simply not accurate of REIs actual service. I explained that I wasnt looking for a new pack, simply some consideration about repairing/replacing their product. With one failed pack I will certainly not be paying them for a second mistake. After many purchases with REI for many years, the sales manager couldnt seem to find my account or where I even purchased the pack: REIs product return policy is very poor!!! After todays experience at the REI, I have chosen to spend my money with other retail companies that might value my business, Id suggest the same for other people as well.

Come here for great service and advice! I have to say, I cannot think of a store that treats their customers better. The first trip here, in 2011, I had excellent, above and beyond help getting x-country skis. I had ordered them at a CA REI store, and went to pick them up here. The clerk looked at the skis I was picking up, and recognized they were all wrong for the type of skiing I was planning to do here. He found the right kind- on clearance, and managed to get them shipped from Alaska, while customizing them to best fit my needs. Overall, I saved over 100 dollars, and have used them multiple times every year and absolutely love them. I continued to come back to this store, and have found that they will truly listen to customers and do their best to make it an excellent experience. I want to thank one of the managers, Daniel, especially for ensuring that there is not a single issue that goes unaddressed. Even today, I am awed by their care, concern, and followup.

I purchased a halfdome 2+ rei brand tent and upon the first time assembly one of the poles cracked which is surprising because I love these tents and have used them time and time again, and just purchased one for myself. It must have been a freak accident because they are normally super durable, but when I went to exchange it for a new set of poles they said that they wouldnt because it was under normal wear and tear. First time assembly is not normal wear and tear. Even after explaining the situation a couple of times no understanding was given or exchanged offered. Terrible service which is so surprising because I love REI and their products and normally they are so easy to work with. I love the tent and other REI products, but my experience with this REI store was awful! My representative I spoke with was Shantee or Shantel I couldnt really hear her name.

Great store, helpful staff. Its 100% worth getting a membership (lifetime!). Manager Kara Allen was very understanding when I had an issue with a mislabeled price. **EDIT: I dont like the way they do their gear sales: its a complete lottery (with a deck of playing cards) so theres no point to getting there early -- you might get in last and not get anything good. And then the guy next to you grabs a card for each of his kids and then they all surge in when one of their cards is called. Not cool. I MUCH prefer the Oregon (Tualatin) store method: Line up by when you get there. Imagine that! If you want better deals, get up earlier. It rewards people who care. The chance method alienates them.

This goes down as possibly one of the worst customer experiences Ive ever had in my more than 15 years dealing with REI! They clearly have a significant issue with in-store pickups special orders Etc and Not only was their point of sale system incorrect but the cashier was unable to help me in any way putting blame back on me for what was clearly a failed transaction on their part. Hoping that I dont end up with close to $1,000 in double charges on my card as I have absolutely no faith that they executed my transactions for an in-store pickup correctly. Teady to cut up my membership card and never shop there again. Literally one of the worst customer experiences Ive had in my life!!

The low score is winter sports and ski related, you may be fine if you are rock climbing or need bike equipment. The Sandy location does not cater to skiing as one would expect in Utah. Save yourself a trip and head to Millcreek REI. Contrary to Google search this location does not carry cross country skiing equipment. You will be directed to the Millcreek REI (which was very nice, knowledgeable). Sandy REI reasoning was if no one is coming in to buy why carry the equipment (cant buy if you dont carry the equipment.) There is limited downhill equipment as well.

REI has some of the best equipment available and some of the best deals around but the thing that makes REI the most amazing place to purchase outdoor goods is their staff. I have never been in a store where the staff knows their products as well as I have seen in REI. They provide education and have never steered me wrong. I opened a membership this year and it has been one of the best decisions I have ever made. I sometimes go to the store and look at stuff or get on the website and read reviews or educational articles in my free time just for fun.

This place has taken so much of my money in the last month. Black Diamond mitts, gators, Tubbs Flex Snowshoes and trekking poles. Then I went back and bought some Sorel snow boots. I love this store and products. Three of four employees that I have asked helped me more than necessary. One small tidbit about the store that is very helpful to me are the comparison brochures. Combine those with the helpful staff. Its hard to go wrong in my opinion. I have a ton of camping stores near me and this has been my favorite by far for this type of gear.

We drove 40 minutes in the heat and construction, and were planning to buy $600 worth of items. We walked the store 3 times trying to find our items, were frustrated by the scanner that didnt reflect the sales price, and finally found someone to ask where to look for our items. That person referred us to someone else, who didnt show up, then a female employee offered to help us, but as we asked questions she acted offended that she had to explain things to us. When I said, Im sorry I seem to be bothering you - she acknowledged it. We left.

The staff are very helpful and knowledgeable about their products! They are able to give great recommendations for gear and whatever else you may need. The prices are a bit high compared to other sporting goods stores. For me their service and and high quality products make it worth it. Plus if you join the CO-OP you will get a 10% cash dividend for purchases you have made at the end of the fiscal year every year. The other REI location to the north has bigger store and therefore larger selection of goods. I highly recommend REI!
