While this stores does offer a semi-unique selection of eye wear, the service is deplorable. I cannot speak about the doctor, but the optical staff is extremely snooty (to say the least) and not very knowledgeable of their products. I was given a gift certificate for this store and visited 3 or 4 times over a couple of months trying to find something I liked and each time my experience with their service was the same, with the exception of one salesman named, Wes. Two of those visits I told them I had a gift certificate I needed to redeem and the customer service plummeted to below its already ridiculously low level. (No commission on gift certificates, it would appear?) I did eventually get something just to redeem the certificate, but will not wear them with any pride as the whole experience resulted in a really bad aftertaste for this place and I will certainly never patronize them again. The entire staff needs an attitude make over. For better selection and a more positive experience, check out Eye Works in Midtown. PLUS I found they had the exact same frames I bought at Spectacles for $120 less...(minus the complimentary snobbery, of course.)

Dont believe anything they say! Cant speak about the optometrist, but the staff is without character and the prices are horrendous. I was offered a pair of frames for $375 which retails online for $178. Total with lenses was $1200, same exact frame and lenses could be had online for $408. I understand a brick-and-mortar store has more overhead, but three times the cost is just shameful. The salesman told me that I should act quick because this would be the only pair of these frames in Houston. He literally told me that no one else in Houston would have my glasses. I had him write down the model and brand and I went home and found them online for the above prices. I had the retail site sort the brand results by bestseller and that model came up #1 on the list! LOL... The only pair in Houston... Nothing sickens me more than to be told a boldface lie by a slick salesperson. Furthermore the salesman told me they dont take insurance because it "brings in a different class of people." Now thats class.

I have been going to Spectacles on Montrose for so long that I dont even remember the exact year. It was 1999 or 2000, when I first walked in to buy a pair of sunglasses and have been a faithful customer ever since. The boutique is elegant and the eyewear selection is excellently curated. The staff is helpful and friendly; I always receive a prompt and knowledgeable response to any query I have. Dr. Mapes is wonderful!!!! Dr. Mapes expertise is matched only by his approachability and genuine concern for his patients. I took my daughter to Spectacles for her first eye exam last year. She arrived terrified and left with a huge smile on her face. When I called to get an appointment for my eye allergies, I was given one right away. Dr. Mapes, as always, was thorough with the examination and offered multiple solutions to my problem in a kind and helpful manner. We are proud to be a Spectacles family!

Dont EVER go here! The employees are huge liars and SLEAZE BALLS and take advantage of clients by charging them more than necessary. They prey on the rich that come in the store and overcharge them for all sorts of things and try to squeeze every last dime out of you. Most of the glasses break easily and you will have to come in to repair them at least 1-2 times a month and it is a huge hassle because the workers will make it seem like your fault and the replacement process is a nightmare!!! You are better buying off them online.

Its such a relief to find Spectacles! I spent months going all over Houston to find unique eyeglasses. Finally my oncologist recommended Dr. Mapes and Spectacles on Montrose. OMG----I wanted one of everything. Such a great selection of European frames. I ended up buying wood frames (Dolpi) and my sunglasses are IC Berlin. I am so happy and they have a customer for life. Dr. Mapes is amazing. His staff was so helpful and they really know what they are doing. I "see" why everyone goes there!

Optometrist Evan Mapes is great - excellent care and service - but he should hire a new sales team. I have been a repeat customer, happy to pay a significant premium for the service, but have now been treated rudely on multiple occasions by one of his sales persons and wont be returning anytime soon

This place has the coolest shades. A little pricey, but can you really put a price tag on cool?
