S & S Exotic Animals in Houston/Aldine, TX. We bought our three suggies from this horrible place and today was hopefully the conclusion of any and all involvement with them. Our first girl, Skittles, died of sudden lethargy and ended up drowning in a water bowl (because, against my better judgement, I listened to them when they insisted that they needed a bowl to wash in). They told us she died of cold, so we should buy a heat lamp. So we do, and get a discount off of two "sister" cage mate gliders. One is two times bigger than the other. Their second night home, the older one tries to kill the baby, Miracle. My boyfriend separates them, the older one is suddenly extremely lethargic and almost ragdoll-like. He picks me up from work, we come home, shes dead. Thats 5 minutes, 10 Tops. Miracles leg is bit, but not broken. Shes aggressive, self-mutilating, barely eating and sleeping. A night or two after, her leg is snapped clean in half. After some debate, my boyfriend and I decide that we want nothing to do with these people, and sadly, we decide to give over Miracle (as, if we didnt, there would be no proof). I called up last night, the owner seemed to laugh off some topics, and tells me to come in that day or today. I went up today at 9, waited until 10 when they opened, waited an extra 25 minutes for her to talk to a couple of boys about buying their animals to sell in her store, and the fun began. Mister Robert explained that I had came and explained the situation with Miracle, and the owner then started talking, leaving no moment for me to respond. I ended up interrupting her and speaking long en I ugh for her to "listen". I wanted a refund for the gliders and all of the paraphernalia we had bought, but I explained that I understood that since I would not dig Skittles out of her grave as proof, I would take compensation for the two I had brought (Miracle in her pouch and her deceased attacker in a frozen cooler, as they had instructed.). My choices were 2 more gliders, a store credit, or to "get out". She laughed off my points about their unknowing of the situation, and even mocked me when I asked for her to tell me honestly that the two "cagemates" I had brought in were a week apart, as they had told us. A literal grin, shrug, and "theyre a week apart" was her only response. She offered 200 as compensation for the 460 we had spent on these poor sickly animals, and I suggested 270. She, again, offered me to get out. I told her I would take 270. She shook her head laughed and walked into the office after asking mister Robert if he knew how to give a refund. These animals are sick, definitely not USDA breeder certified, and the establishment itself should be avoided at all costs. They seem to be a money centered store set on selling as much as they can and make you feel at fault if anything does happen, and if you dare say anything, dont expect a mature response.

HORRIBLE PLACE!!!!! There should be an option to give 0 stars! We bought two "dumbo" (we soon realized they were not) rats from them 6 weeks ago. We were told they were 15 weeks old (they were closer to 6 weeks).Within a few days, both were sneezing. I called them and was told that it was normal and they were just adjusting to their new home. A few days later, I took them to my vet because they were still sneezing occasionally. They were both diagnosed with Mycoplasma infections and one had a brewing case of pneumonia. We left with a nebulizer and three different kinds of antibiotics. I was not initally upset with the pet store...I have done my homework and realize that mycoplasma exists in most pet rats and some rats wind up showing symptoms and getting sick and some dont. I figured it was bad luck. The more research I did, the more I realized how wrong I was. In the pet store, the rats were housed in a small glass cage, mixed sexes and in pine bedding. If you have rats or have learned the hard way like me, you know that pine or cedar bedding is BAD for rats. It can cause respiratory irritation and bring on flare ups of Myco. At any rate, we began treating both rats...nebulizing them for 20 minutes twice a day and giving oral antibiotics twice daily. After a few more days, I realized that they both had these tiny brown specs of dirt in their fur. NOT DIRT...LICE. We were back at the vet, picking up even more medication to treat the lice. Since lice are species-specific (rat lice only like rats, people lice only like people), the only place they could have come from was the pet store. So lets get to the point. Three weeks after my purchase, one rat had died, and I had spent over $600.00 in vet bills for her treatment. Last night, the second one died. She had begun to show signs of SDA (sialodacryoadentitis). Her eyes were bulging out, she had porphyrin drainage from her eyes and nose, a swollen neck, difficulty walking, etc. Unfortunately, this is a virus. No treatment is available and most healthy rats will kick it in about 7-10 days. My rats from S and S were not healthy. Combined with the current myco infection it was deadly. I hold this pet store 100% responsible for the expensive emotional roller coaster ride that my 9 year old daughter endured. They lied to us about the age of the rats and the breed and sold me product that was unhealthy for them. I received no help from them when I called, but was assured that all the other rats there were happy and healthy and that they had not had any other complaints from customers. DO NOT BUY ANYTHING FROM THIS STORE. IT SHOULD BE SHUT DOWN. P.S. Anyone who keeps a lion and tiger in a concrete, small enclosure has got a screw loose. Shame on me for missing that red flag.

If I could rate LESS than poor. I would. Filthy and disgusting place. Employees were awful. One began putting the chinchilla we were purchasing into a cardboard box and taping it sealed shut! wtf! He had NO clue. The employees were more interested in their lunch than business and caring for the animals. Animals were not at proper temperatures and for many animals this is CRITICAL. We have raised chinchillas, as pets, for many years and understand what it takes. S & S obviously does not work with reputable breeders because the baby chinchilla we purchased began having health issues immediately. We got her top of the line care at GCVS and spent A LOT of time and money trying to help nurse her back to health. We couldnt because it turned out she had a genetic flaw because she was not from experienced, quality breeders. VERY sadly she passed away only 3 weeks after we purchased her. We do not give a crap about the money we spent. We DO give a crap to stop this place from selling animals that are sick, inbred and mistreated. We have left S & S a message to contact the breeder of this little mosaic chinchilla and ask them to stop mating the parents to prevent more senseless deaths. OF COURSE we have not received a reply. Thankfully we were the ones to buy her and give her a wonderful 3 weeks with the best care money can buy, tons of attention and love so we can at least say she had quality of life even though she did not have a long life at all. I cant imagine the horror she would have experienced if she had stayed in S & S care through this entire ordeal. NEVER, never again will we shop there. People, do not worry if this place gets shut down. Those animals will be re homed to much better places. There are rescues all over town that would be happy to have every pet from S & S. DO NOT buy from them. You think you are saving a pet by buying it from S & S but you are only perpetuating the system. They will just refill that empty spot with another "puppy mill" quality animal. Support the rescues and/or reputable breeders. You will be glad you did.
