When in Austin, eat doughnuts! The last time I was in Austin, I wanted to try Voodoo Doughnuts but did not have the time to do so. This time, I serendipitously was staying a block away and stopped by Voodoo on the last day I was in Austin. Hailing from Portland, Voodoo Doughnuts is known for their eclectic doughnuts and pink boxes. Aside from Portland and Austin, there are shops in only four other cities in the world. You can find so many different kinds of doughnuts here. Everything from the traditional glazed and chocolate to cereal varieties like Fruit Loops and Captain Crunch to the following: + Voodoo Bubble (bubble gum dust and a piece of bubble gum) + The Homer (exactly what you think it is - strawberry flavored icing and sprinkles) + Bacon Maple Bar (maple frosting and bacon on top) + Voodoo Doll (shaped like a voodoo doll, raspberry jelly topped with chocolate frosting and a pretzel stake) + Marshall Mathers (vanilla frosting and mini M&M’s) + Mexican Hot Chocolate There are tons of other varieties. They serve both raised yeast, cake, and vegan doughnuts. I myself got a blueberry cake doughnut and the Homer. Doughnuts are really cheap - many start at just 95 cents and go up from there. They are all hand made and made round the clock, so they are extra fresh. Because I came here on a weekday around 8am, I didnt have to wait at all. The shop itself is also much larger than I thought itd be, so I camped at a table to devour my food. The decor is very appropriately Austin-centric. All Voodoo Doughnuts are cash only!

Having been to the PDX location prior to the one opening in ATX, I think my "ooooh and ahhh" factor was not as hyped as most people experiencing Voodoo for the first time. The thing to keep in mind w/this place if you are a newb to the "eccentric doughnut" scene is that you will be overwhelmed, straight up. If you can come to terms with that, it will make all the difference when trying to decipher what the hell you want to put in your mouth. The selection itself is fun to order and even funner to eat! One persons Cock N Balls is anothers Triple Chocolate Penetration and its hard to go wrong with the Butterfingering...just sayin. Oh, and be prepared for a line, like anything and everything in ATX, especially when it is new and shiny and all the "cool kids" want to say theyve already been. No joke, it will wrap around the block! The absolute insane wait times, however, can work in your favor because it allows you to research while you queue. Seriously, go in with a game plan of at least A thru D and always...ALWAYS...have a backup d-nut! The staff here are hit and miss just like the doughnuts. Some are exceptional and others underwhelming despite looking otherwise, but they are very reasonably priced (the doughnuts...I dont know how much they charge for staff) so if you do walk out disappointed the only thing you wasted was your time.

The Best doughnuts I have tried! I first went in Portland, and recently found them in Austin!!! They have these wierd combinations that make great toppings for these pastries such as: Capintan Crunch Cereal, Mapple & bacon, and the famous Voodoo Guy (with jelly feeling!)

Gave this place a two for creativity not for taste. My party of 7 had different donuts. The plain chocolate donut was huge and had at least half a lbs of frosting on it , super overload. The marshmallow matters donut- had mega marshmallow and mini m&m on it , good if you love those combos. The butterfingering donut- was bad the breading was dry and butterfinger was slimy. Maple bacon donut- bacon is good, the donut by itself is like any other donut you can get for 50 cents. The raspberry Romeo- was huge, had lots of filling at the end of the donut. Most of the breading for the donuts were fluffy, thats good. The establishment was hot, no AC whatsoever, that was horrible! No one wants to eat while they are sweating especially for those prices! Not organized at all. The staff is friendly so thats s plus. Is it worth the parking prices of 10 dollars plus the prices of their donuts, no , not by a long shot. I wouldnt travel out of my way again to eat there, not at all. If they come up with different flavors then maybe but until then, not going there again.

Me, my boyfriend and my friend visited Austin for Classic Game Fest. We arrived at 5:30 am, and wanted to try out a donut shop. We immediately found VooDoo doughnuts and judging by the pictures on several reviews, we were excited to try it. However, as soon as we pulled up in front of the donut shop, an old man, homeless, and in a wheelchair cursed out at a lady;who looked like she was on something, stating her dog had bit him, so he had whacked the dog with his cane. The lady was screaming out, "He is hitting me and my dog! Call the police!" We went inside to speak to the manager and she handled it very well. So much for an Austin greeting. Now, the donuts. Vegan options are available. I got a vegan cookies and creme donut and it was soooo mouthwatering. The dude on the register was very helpful and he was super polite. The donuts are all different and unique, some have froot loops on top, others are shaped into a silly voodoo doll and so much more you just want to try them all!

I was craving doughnuts so hard last night (which never happens), and was so excited to see that Voodoo was open at 1 AM. I walked into their beautiful, funky establishment with cheer. The cashier greeted me warmly and told me to pick out any doughnuts I wanted. My anticipation mounted as I picked 6 different beautiful doughnuts...and I waltzed out of there with a pep in my step.... In the car....is where I met complete and utter disappointment. I thought maybe the first doughnut choice was a bad fluke, so I started taking bites of the others. ..each more disappointing than the last. Im SO upset I wasted 8 dollars on these doughnuts. They are super thick & doughy with not a very good flavor. Too much icing...bad tasting icing..and the ones that have cereal on top, well the cereal was stale. They werent even a little warm. Sorry guys, I really was optimistic for my first time there, but this Austinite gives Voodoo Doughnuts 2 thumbs down :( . Nice people though!

I fully support the rise (pun intended) of the doughnut in Austin, and I love the fun and irreverent take on doughnuts from Voodoo. The best deal (and the quickest way to get your doughnuts) is to order the Voodoo Dozen and let the staff choose your selection. Theyll give you a variety of "fun" and "regular" donuts--its a great way to try something new, especially if youve never been before. But if youre absolutely set on trying a particular doughnut, you can order a la carte. Everything is good (it IS a doughnut, after all), so its hard to go wrong. The store has plenty of room to sit and enjoy your doughnuts, and its fun to explore some of the artwork and decorative touches throughout the room. If its not apparent yet, BRING CASH. Theres an ATM by the cash registers if you forget. You will likely have to wait in line, but it moves quickly (especially if everyone orders the Voodoo Dozen). There could be worse places to wait--its at least a fun atmosphere!
