I used to love this place until they gave my father & I a hard time as we were walking in. Ive come to this store for coffee & teas for the past year and half with my boyfriend and never had issues. As we (my dad and myself) were walking in a lady saw us and immediately stopped us. She jumped in front of us and said "no no no, you must put bag behind register". At first we thought she was kidding. There was an Asian woman who just walked in with a over sized purse bag (Thats pretty common now a days) and she was not asked. My bag is a black Candy design backpack purse from Kohls. Now, I understand how it may raise an issue but it being so small I did not see how I had to leave it behind the register with my wallet and phone. I had both straps on. The lady kept giving my dad such a prejudice look and followed us into the coffee lane while I shopped for the coffee. I introduced my dad to an instant coffee and was buying him the kind I drink. Let me back up, after saying Ive been there many times before and with the same bag with my boyfriend (whos white by the way) I didnt appreciate the hostility. She asked what we were going to buy not that it is her business or why it matters I told her just instant coffee. Again, I truly dont understand why I have to explain myself and why we were there. I know how this story must sound but guys truly they treated us horribly & I felt bad for taking my Dad there. My Dad was extremely pissed and asked to see the manager. At that point they said it was fine and we could get the coffee. I should not have but I love the coffee so much I still bought it. They followed us to the register and seriously treated us like criminals from the moment we entered to the moment we left... I am going to speak with the owner and would appreciate a proper apology. We did nothing wrong & I understand they are protecting their store with procedures but confronting people and accusing them of wanting to steal before anything has happened is prejudice and wrong. Other places do not treat people this way!

I guess its good if youre just going once for noveltys sake, but if you actually regularly cook food that uses ingredients from here it can be frustrating. They are frequently out of stock of absolutely basic Chinese staples - black vinegar, dark soy sauce, and doubanjiang, to name a few. Their stock of dried spices is old and disorganized. Produce is rarely fresh on the weekends. They once sold me spoiled ground pork. They really seem to struggle with inventory management - likely a consequence of trying to fill the space theyre in. They have absolutely no one providing assistance in the aisles. On the plus side, it is the best Chinese-Vietnamese market in town and is fine for less-perishable goods (canned/bottled/jarred/dried/frozen), assuming they have what you want in stock. The fresh fish (ask them to kill one for you) is also decent. If youre looking for Korean or Japanese goods, go to Han Yang or Asahi - theyre better-run than MT in practically every meaningful way. After H-Mart and 99 Ranch arrive in Austin, MT is going to have to re-think its business model.

BEWARE of charges - you may not get your refund! I was charged for a purchase that I did not make because their cashier neglected to clear out a return I have because they mislabeled the prices and I had to go get the correct item. Because they did not clear out the transaction, the next customers purchase was charged to my credit card. When I asked the manager to refund my money, she said she could not refund my money since they "lost their merchandise." (They can claim a loss as a company but as an individual consumer I cannot do that!) Then she told me to contest the charges with my credit card and she wont challenge it. I took it on good-faith and did just that. Only to find out she did challenge it and now I am responsible for the charges. So, be careful about your bill, your invoices, and your charges. If they make you any promises, get it in writing! Better off, shop at ASIA MARKET off 183/Spicewood Springs. Their owner is much nicer, their products very authentic, and they have a cafe!

I have spent many hours here poring over the expansive aisles crammed with goodies available nowhere else in Austin. The produce section is an exceptional bargain for some items - the mushrooms are amazing. Also, they have the best limes I have ever seen. Tons of dirt cheap fresh herbs. Of course all the exotic stuff is here in vast quantities also. The meat counter is a bit dicey at times, and sometimes theres a little bit of a language barrier for me with guys manning it. Seafood here can be very good. Theres also a fair amount of offal for the taking. A lot of stuff in the dry goods is not marked for price, which can be an issue. The good news is that prices are generally very good. Checkout is always extremely fast with knowledgeable and skilled employees manning the registers.

This is the ASIAN supermarket to go to in Austin. Its like the H-E-B of Asian Markets. It has multiple brands of every kind of Asian noodle, sauce, and seasoning. Whatever Asian ingredient I might need I usually find it here. There have been a few niche items Ive sampled abroad that Ive looked for here and not found, but its also possible I havent looked in the right spots. Their organizational structure can be a bit hard to navigate. There seems to be 2 possible sections for a lot of items and Im never quite sure how it works. If you cant find the noodles you want in the noodle aisle, try the maze of boxes at the front of the store. Also, schedule your visit to have a meal at any one of the restaurants located in the same complex.

A Private User

Very wide selection, pretty much any asian food product you need can be found here, usually at a reasonable price. They also have other stuff like housewares, but its grossly overpriced in comparison. Not a very well organized place though - I found the kind of rice noodles I was looking for not in the noodles section, but on a random rack in the produce section, for example. Service is simply bad. There dont seem to be "floor people" for helping customers, and their customer service desk is often unstaffed. When I did find someone, they seemed annoyed when I asked them to show me where a particular product was. Long story short: good selection, reasonable prices (for food only), somewhat disorganized, bad service.

Crystal Sands

It stinks, and its somewhat dirty, but I love it anyway. The fish smell will drive many people away, but once you get past that, it has a wonderful selection of everything. So many spices and a nice seafood department which can clean and chop it into pieces for you. If you just feel like trying something new but are scared to get in too deep, go to the junk food section and pick stuff at random. The drinks are also good for that, but be warned that if you pick an odd flavor youre not used to like pennywort, itll probably end up in the trash. So overall: if you know what youre doing, its a good selection. If you dont, itll be an odd eye-opening experience but still fun.
