I was in Do Trot In this afternoon shopping for my mom. We were looking for paddock boots, half chaps, breeches and gloves. She is taking her first lesson tomorrow after not riding for many years. I was casually looking for size 75" blankets for my lease pony in the consignment area. Deanna Yamasaki, the owner, asked if she could help. I have previously bought personal items of Deannas in the consignment section and I have items on consignment there as well, some of which have sold but most items havent sold after almost a year on consignment. Ive come to find out that they were in the very bottom of a large bin where people were unlikely to look. Anyways, there were no blankets in the correct size and weight for my lease pony so Deanna suggested we go look at the new blankets. For laughs and giggles, and just to see what is out there, I agreed and she showed me to the blanket room. She asked me sizing questions about my pony and after I answered, she began to look for the right blanket to fit. She pulled out a lot of blankets and eventually got a step ladder and looked even further for me. Helpful, right? Well, I thought so too. We found one that I thought would fit and she handed it to me. I liked to looks of it and to top it off, it was only around $90!! Probably not the best quality, but it would work until springtime. I took my phone out so I could take a picture of the label and compare prices. As I began to do so, Deanna asked what I was doing. I replied and thats when she started to get rude. In a very rude manner, Deanna said, " You shouldnt do that!". I figured she meant that I shouldnt buy used blankets off of Facebook because of the risk of disease. I asked her why. She responded, "It is very rude of you and not fair to me! You made me go through all this work to find you the right blanket and now youre going to buy from someone else? Not fair!". Actually, I wasnt planning on buying today at all. I wanted to see what else is out there of similar quality and possibly get something used for a better price. I explained this to her and she said to me, "Well, its very rude of you to do that to a small retailer!". Well, I do understand that her small business may be struggling, but I am a student with a small budget buying for a horse that isnt even mine and Im not made of money. I also understand that small retailers cannot price things as cheap as mass retailers, but that is not my problem. I told her that the pony isnt mine and I didnt plan on buying today anyways. She just huffed and turned away to start angrily putting blankets back away. I didnt ask to look at new blankets, all I wanted was to see if there were any cheap, used ones in consignment and she tried luring me into buying a new blanket. I told Deanna that I would like all of the items that I had on consignment to be gathered and brought to me before I leave so I could bring them home. I was NOT pleased with the way she treated me. She mumbled an "okay" and I left the room to go find my mom. On a happier note, there is a new girl, Liv, working there that was beyond helpful in finding my mom half chaps and paddock boots that fit comfortably. We wound up only buying breeches that we found on consignment and not buying anything new from Do Trot In because of the attitude and ill customer service that I received from Deanna. I made sure to take pictures of everything that we planned to buy so that I could get it for a better deal from someone who treated me nicely and was respectful to their customers. After this experience, Do Trot In will not be receiving much more of our business.
