Well! I had decided to visit my new neighborhood tattoo parlor (Cap City) after Evolved had dropped the ball and not contacted me back after I had dropped my sketch and info off to them. I had trouble the first few times trying to visit Cap City - because they werent open during the posted hours. This is somewhat understandable since its a very small business with two artists. I was greeted by the woman - I still dont know her name since she never introduced herself or gave me a personal card. She asked me what I wanted, I showed her my sketch, and I asked for an estimate. I made an appointment and made a down-payment for the tattoo (forfeit if I was a no-show). I come in for my appointment, bringing my friend to morale support, and we wait for awhile while the shop is set up. (The shop itself is very clean and looks very nice). The apprentice shows me the womans version of the tattoos Ive drawn, I ask him if she can change a few things, and he relays the information back to her. (Maybe its helping him train, but I felt kind of weird having a messenger relaying my thoughts instead of talking to the artist). Eventually everything looks good and the stencils are made. She puts the stencils on my back and I have to crane my neck to see the placement in the mirror (no hand mirror?). Its not the placement I had in mind, so I try to explain it to her using my picture as a reference. She does it again, but I guess I wasnt clear, and she was very frustrated when I dont like the second arrangement. She even tells me that she has somewhere to be soon! I felt like crying - I didnt feel like I was being that unreasonable, after all Ill have to deal with this tattoo forever - but she seemed very put-out that I was being this much trouble and taking up her time. The actual tattooing experience hurt a lot - well duh! But I think it went reasonably well. After she finished, she quickly listed off the after-care procedures, taped saran-wrap over my tattoo, and collected the rest of the payment. I left glad that I got the tattoo, but doubting my decision to visit this parlor in particular. The instructions she she gave me were a bit vague as to how long I continue the use of Aquaphor salve on the tattoo - so I looked up instructions online. I found a lot of sites bashing the use of Saran wrap and petroleum based products like Aquaphor, leaving me even more confused and in doubt. There was no build up of trust, comfort, or care between me and my tattoo artist. Overall I felt a bit lost and abandoned after getting my first tattoo at Cap City - and was glad I at least had a friend with me to lend a hand. This may be the place for the battle-hardened tattoo warriors, but maybe not so much for the naive and delicate first-timers. Two weeks later, my tattoo has healed but is much MUCH lighter and blotchy in the shading. I called Cap City to schedule a touch-up but learned that my artist was on vacation until next week. I explained to them that I was moving to NYC on Tuesday, but they were very adamant that only she could do it. Fed up with Cap City and their poor customer service, I called a friend of a friend and had her touch up the tattoo for me. She ended up making a few changes which better fit my concept and look great!

I love the folks at Cap City! Alli, Andy, Brian and Phil are some of the most welcoming people and wonderful artists I have ever met, certainly within the tattoo industry. Since the shop first opened, I have had nearly 15 hours of tattoo work done, and am thrilled with all of it. Unlike some previous experiences in other tattoo shops, I have always felt comfortable and respected at Cap City. The shop itself is immaculate, and the high-ceiling-walls double as an art gallery, with paintings or drawings from Ohio artists always on display. There is usually a busily-sketching apprentice to greet walk-ins, and the artists themselves take the time to listen to tattoo ideas and offer some insight and enthusiasm. At the end of my first session I got some detailed information about aftercare, and all my tattoos have healed beautifully and without any fallout or splotches. In addition, all of the work Ive had done at Cap City is highly detailed and visible in normal clothing, and I regularly receive compliments on not just the art itself, but on the incredible detail of the tattoos and the skill of the artist. My only regret is that I will be moving out of state next year, and cant take these guys with me!! As a final thought, I would like to point out that (as a woman myself) some tattoo shops and some tattoo artists can be uncomfortable or creepy when the client is a women. This is not the case at Cap City! All the folks there are honest, genuine people and I strongly feel that it is a safe and comfortable place for any woman to get tattooed, whether it is her first tattoo or her fiftieth.

I have 20+ hours of tattooing from Alli MacGregor, owner of Cap City. Alli is an incredibly talented artist. Her vision for fine details and cohesiveness really set her artwork apart from her peers. Alli did my first tattoo and killed it (my left-arm half sleeve) so I went back for my right arm half sleeve and couldnt be happier. HIGHLY recommend to anyone who wants some near-perfect work.
