When I moved to the Hyde Park area several years ago, I wasnt sure Id find a wine store I liked as much as the store I went to when I lived in another part of town. Turns out I had nothing to worry about. Everything about The Wine Merchant is great: terrific selection, knowledgeable staff (who are also really nice, down-to-earth people), and a daily tasting bar that always has a dozen or so wines, whites and reds, available for sampling. There are also Friday night tastings every other week where you can sample eight moderately-priced wines, plus selected cheeses and appetizers, for $20, and weekly Saturday tastings where, for $15 (usually), you can stop in anytime between noon and 5:00 and try four high-end wines of a certain kind or with a certain theme. Finally, theres the Ultimate Wine Station, which always has eight higher-end to very-high-end wines, and you can sample one, two, or four ounces of whichever ones you choose. Ive become a regular and have met a bunch of great people (who come there from all over town) around the wine bar, at the Wine Station, and at the tastings (hey, whos not happy when theyre drinking wine?).

I have been buying wine at this store since 1996 (maybe 1997). I have always been pleased with the selection and service. They offer a wide selection, have a low pressure staff, but are very helpful if you need assistance. They are great with gift baskets and shipping wine as gifts which I have used both personally and for my business.

Aloof staff on board. I suppose unless you are a regular customer, they are really not interested in your business. We were made to feel unwelcome by the inhospitable atmosphere. Needless to say we will not be returning. There are other wine stores in the area with more obscure offerings and variety.

Good selection, helpful staff. I kind of miss the old layout. There was something nice about the wine stacked on top of itself and hardly any room for anything else. The new layout is nice.
