Updated Aug 2016, Performance is back to their big box mentality of being condescending A-Holes. So If you need to go to a bike shop I would hit up Cycle Spoken Here first then REI, then All star bike shop, lastly performance bicycle if you need something and cant order it. Way better then trendy Local bike shop(s). So here is the deal with Performance bike shop they dont care if your short and fat. They will help you find the parts or bike you need/looking for at your budget, plain and simple with no thrills and no scensters yip yab. There main market is for entry level through mid level range and just touching high end level bikes. So dont expect to walk in and test ride a $15k carbon bike for times trials. As they wont have any and wont act like they can get it for you. But if you are over 6 feet tall, lanky and and are looking some some obscure hyper performance bicycle part for your adamantium Tour de France bike. Performance will not have it nor will any other bike shop locally, so get over it and order it online. Which Ironically you will probably find on one of Performance online stores. So why Performance vs. Local bikes shops? They do have adamantium parts online that you can order and have delivered to the store for you to pick up. If it is 1gram too heavy you can return and they dont give you grief for it. Conclusion if you are an Elite cyclist who owns a bicycle that is a equivalent to the down payment for a home, dont shop here go to All Star Bike shop. But they probably wont have the part either, but they probably have ridden an time trial bike and you can talk shop for a wee bit. I hope this helps why there are so many low stars for a good bike shop.

My husband and I were just talking about Performance Bike and how snotty and rude the Cary location employees are. We got online to see if anyone else said the same thing and can see there is a trend. If you ask a question its like you are a total freaking idiot because you dont live, eat and breathe cycling. We asked about getting our bikes tuned up (with our membership plan thing...forgive me for not knowing the "legit" term) and the guy was like "oh, you arent getting in here for weeks!" and was super condescending and ridiculous. Now, Im a bit high maintenance by my husband is cool as a cucumber 99.9% of the time and has a high tolerance for jerks. When my husband says he wont go back somewhere because of poor and ignorant customer service, you can bet its pretty bad. On the upside, we explored the Chapel Hill location of Performance and had the exact opposite experience. They were awesome! We bought 2 bikes the same day and gear and they have been nothing but nice and efficient. Our advice dont hate on Performance Bike, just the Cary location.

These negative reviews dont currently hold any merit and seem dated based on my recent experience. Maybe Performance Bicycle had some issues in the past but they are definitely resolved. These guys are great! I just purchased a new mountain bike from them on April 20th 2015. I researched a ton over the past month or so, and had a somewhat decent idea of what I thought I wanted, but I was a bit unsure. I went in with a few questions, and explained my research and what I thought I wanted and my budget. They answered my questions, helped me out, and took my research & budget into account. They didnt try to up sale me on a $3500 bike. Performance Bicycle gave me the gear I wanted and needed, at the price I needed. I was also in and out in under an hour with a test ride and eyeball fitting. They also have a great club program that I signed up for where you get a percentage back on your next purchase. I ended up going back for a bike rack for my truck and some other things. I will definitely continue to use this shop.

I had two experiences actually. I went here to buy a bike because they had a few lower-end bikes that fit my budget and features (and it was basically the only place that had them). The sales people were great, I think I talked to some poor guy for almost an hour about selecting the right bike. He was knowledgeable and only tried once to push me to a higher budget bike (and only after talking to him for awhile when he got the impression I might need a more professional model). I didnt have to wait to talk to someone, and was offered help on multiple times (based on other reviews your mileage here can vary). The second experience was the next day when I bent the back wheel coming off a curb. They were very helpful and apologetic. They fixed the back wheel for free, double checked the front wheel, promised to replace it for free if it continued to have problems, and explained to me why the wheel could have bent so easily (miss-tightened spokes on a machine assembled rim). Overall a great bike shop.

If I would have left after the first interaction this would have been 2 stars. Took my bike in for a free lifetime adjustment that comes with every bike purchased. My rear derailleur was acting iffy. I was happy that the service dept said they could do it on the spot. 4 min later I had my bike back and the guys said "good as new". Well it wasnt. Asked another guy John if he would help and he went above and beyond. Not only fixed the problem, but provided a new chain for the bike and made other additional adjustments. Went through each area (front suspension, rear suspension, derailleur, brakes, etc) and made tweaks to fit me personally. He was so detailed that he wanted to ride the bike to ensure it performed just as well under load. I could not be happier by the service received by John. A little disappointed in the service mechanic, but the follow up more than made up for it.

I walked in today with my daughters brand new bike and an older adult bike. Her bike was put together by Toys R Us... Come to find out the brakes needed a little help. They fixed her bike on the spot. The older adult bike had flat tires and had been in the garage a while. I asked for a tune up but after a once over, they said the bike was in good shape and it just needed air in the tires. How much was I charged? Nothing. The "repairs" they felt were minor and they didnt feel right charging me. I would not have blinked an eye if they charged me $50 or more. So grateful for honest and kind people. They could have definitely taken advantage of someone like me...so clearly clueless about bikes. Shout our to Eric and Michael. Your service made our day...took my daughter for a lovely and safe bike ride this afternoon.

Self-important and condescending staff, consistently for the past 4 years. It always feels like you are invading the space of a few close-knit guys who have formed their own elite biking club that they are funding by reluctantly operating this storefront. I recently ordered a bike on-line to be shipped to store and they put it together but lost all the accompanying paperwork. When asking about a kickstand they made me feel like I was some kind of newbie. Their Team Performance membership only earns points for future purchases, and they either auto-renew on your credit card or deduct points if you have opted out. There are so many better options where you can feel valued as a customer and actually get a better selection of parts, better store layout, and better prices.
