From the moment I entered both my girlfriend and I were treated by staff as if not only did we know nothing about biking but that we were in capable of learning. As I tried asking about what i should be looking for when buy a bike that would fit a daily use in the city in which I have had 3 years of city biking experience, the reply was something that your comfortable with. There was no suggestions, nothing advice about if it was a good decision to move from a 16 gear bike to a fixed or the pros and cons of either. While the staff attempted to help my girlfriend it was apparent that they did not have patience for beginners. When she told them she was new to biking there was very little question about the safety of any of the bikes or basic knowledge that experienced riders have. While I have heard great things about this place I did not experience a single one. To top if off when trying to install the Kryponite U lock that was suggested to my girlfriend by the staff, the mounting piece of the lock broke apart to reveal that the lock is only connected to the other piece of the lock (that is attached to the bike frame) by a flimsy plastic washer. Easily worst experience Ive had at any bike store in my life.

This store is my favorite. They have a pretty vast inventory of new/used bikes, new/used parts, bags, and pretty much anything you may need. Everything is at a reasonable price as well. The availability of merchandise and good price is an easy win for anyone however. The way this store really wins over others is their staffs friendly attitude and intuitive approach to helping you. I have been in this store 8-10 times and in each instance I have learned something new or gotten excellent service. Thats what its all about. They have a DIY room (as you can see from pretty much everyones testimonials) that they only charge $5 an hour to use. The room has a bike stand that makes repairs much easier. Additionally, they have nearly every specialized tool you could imagine. Dont buy that $100 bottom bracket puller. Bring your bike into the shop and do it yourself. Youll learn a bit and have the satisfaction of doing it on your own accord and saving yourself a fist full of cash as well. One on One is a great shop, but if you are trying to repair your bike by yourself on the spot and/or save a few bucks go with the Hub.

These folks are such a great asset to our city. Twice Ive gone to them with emergency situations and they hooked me up immediately. Once I was on a ride with a group and I blew a tube about 5 blocks from their shop. Even though they had a line of people, the took me in right away and had me out of that shop in 10 minutes. The second time I also blew a tube on a brand new pet carrier that I was assembling (obviously I have a problem with over-inflating!) Every review I read online about this carrier warned against blowing tubes because they were a special size and it took forever for the manufacturer to replace. I couldnt believe that the Hub actually had them in stock and within 30 minutes I was finishing up the assembly. Theyre super friendly and knowledgeable, and passionate about what they do. They also have an amazing selection of bikes in their Lake St store (the only one Ive ever visited). I keep hoping my bike gets stolen so I have a reason to buy a new one!

I just purchased my first new bike in over a decade from the Hub. After doing a lot of research, I had my selection narrowed down to a couple of options. They built up bikes for me to try out and one employee spent over an hour working with me to adjust and test-ride bikes as well as select all of my accessories. I never felt like they were trying to "upsell" me as some recommendations were for higher ticket items while some pointed out when a budget product was just as good of quality. They special ordered a pannier for me because I had a very specific bag in mind and it arrived quickly. You get 15% off on accessories when you buy a new bike and they will install everything you purchase for free. They also carrier adult female frames in 43 cm in some brands (Felt!) which is what I needed as a petite woman. They even gave me a quick run through on easier ways to mount/dismount my new frame which was a nice bonus. Highly recommended location.

Im done with Hub Bike Co-op as my bike shop. New chain and cassette installed 9 months ago are both completely worn out and skipping. I installed new chain this week and then noticed worn cassette, as gears were still skipping. The mechanic at the Hub suggested buying a new cassette and see how it wears. Cassette should last 3-5000 miles with good chain. I expected them to replace the cassette free of charge, since it wore so quickly, or give the "at cost" amount for the cassette they installed as a credit on a more durable cassette today. Recommendation for me to buy a new cassette and see how it wears is unacceptable. After bike commuting 17K miles, I know that new cassettes with new chains dont wear out after 9 months/1000 miles. This was not my first issue with their service department. Poor customer service = poor customer retention.

In the last month I have been to eight bike shops test riding and asking a lot of questions as I was looking for a new commuter bike to replace my 20 year old workhorse. Technology has changed a lot in that time and the internet only explains so much. A couple of places I was treated as a know nothing (locally owned chains), and a few other places were decent, but The Hub in four visits, the only place I went to more than once, were more than helpful giving very complete answers to all of my questions as I got more and more specific in terms of figuring out that I got exactly the bike I was needing (wanting). That they gave me the long version of an answer every time, without pushing on my part, and willing to tell me the negative truths on some of the more expensive bikes I was looking at, has earned them a customer for life.

I test rode about a half dozen bikes over three different visits across more than a month. David helped me each time I was in. He was super easy to work with and did not apply any sales pressure, which would have sent me running (and not biking) out the door. I had my sights on a couple bikes that werent in stock, and to their credit they got both of them in for me to try. Chris Huff deserves some special recognition for both procuring the hard-to-get Marin Lombard Elite that turned out to be the one I got, but also being superb with staying in contact with me by email during the process. Also kudos to Toast for building up the special order bikes in short order to get me on the road. And for having an awesome nickname.
