Ive lived in MA since 1978. In that time theres always been a DeMoulas or MarketBasket store nearby and though our relationship hasnt always been perfect Ive ended up generally preferring them primarily because the same basket of groceries seems inevitably to cost less. There have been a couple of occasions where I was unhappy enough about something to write a letter to headquarters but at this point I now feel such "loyalty" (if thats what youd call it) that proximity to a Market Basket would even figure in a housing decision. Im not sure why they can so consistently beat the other stores but Ive heard that one big factor may be that they typically own their locations and are thus in control of at least one big cost. Other stores in this locale that I can remember shopped at include Hannaford, StopNShop, ShopNSave, Purity Supreme, Shaws and Sun Foods - Im sure Ive left some out. Recently I had a look at the Target on Plain Street and was surprised at how well stocked it is, though they have a ways to come before theyre a threat. The Market Basket in question is sorta on the border between Lowell with its ethnic diversity and Chelmsford, which is, um, less so. I think the managers have a hard time stocking the variety of items that would please all constituents. Their problem is made none the easier by this store apparently being one of their older, smaller ones, so finding room for everything must be tough. But they certainly please me and the respectful, helpful attitude and prices keep me coming back.

Update: As of 12/22, pricing between this Market Basket and Stop & Shop isnt that much different. Market Basket has been increasing prices, while Stop & Shop has been reducing prices. Reasons to shop here have really dwindled down to taking advantage of sale prices of a few isolated items on sale but then pay attention to Stop & Shops sales (especially front page, instant savings, and bonus gas points) and what you can find there would easily offset the items cheaper here. Of course, I find that a lot of store brand processed foods here are cheaper than anywhere else (and of course, they do it to attract the crowd because store brand processed stuff traditionally carries higher margins). I find any natural foods and HBC is comparatively expensive to other stores, especially when compared to Trader Joes. Some of it is because there isnt that much store brand choices that focus on the natural/organic spectrum. But then again, the natural/organic foods they do have is poorly merchandised. For example, store brand nuts and trail mix is combined with cheaper trail mix with tons of artificial colors and preservatives but all of it is merchandised to give you the impression that even the cheaper stuff is marked as all natural. Service is very variable here and on average, other stores are better. Try to use an internet coupon, and they will be scrutinized closely. Ive had perfectly fine internet coupons get rejected here that I redeemed at Stop & Shop or CVS without any hesitation.

Smaller Market Basket than most. No salad bar, limited cooked foods. Staff at deli are super helpful. They have downgraded pet food offerings which is too bad. There are empty sites in the plaza, I keep hoping they will expand this store and make it better, as its the closest one to me. I have tried the newer store on Broadway, but find they do not carry a lot of premium brands, so many items that are my regular purchases are not available there, not to mention, the parking lot is a horror show on Broadway.

I LOVE that this is a smaller store, not one of the oversized, overwhelming megastores. Its also important to me that both the staff and the shoppers are from varied cultural and ethnic backgrounds. Its not all white. Yay. Also, the staff is treated right, with a real stock in the companys success, and theyre always great! I only go to hannafords if theres an item I want but cant find here. Just for cherry pom juice, actually. :P

Wish they had a bakery. The lines are always a long wait. They dont carry the frozen dinners I like. They discontinued my vanilla/caramel ice cream cones from Hood and Friendlys. The employee was very helpful and told me he was ordering them but just wasnt receiving them. I appreciate the help but if I can, I stop at a different location.

Not an enormous store, but a great little neighborhood grocer accessible to thousands by walking. It has everything I need, and I often run into people I know there. Additionally, plow drivers meticulous clear the parking lot and even plow the sidewalks for us..

This market went on strike in 2014 but it is a really good market with lots of food at a good price. You can also buy household essentials and there is a large parking lot.
