The owner doesn’t simply buy used books in bulk, he curates them. He goes through the books people bring him meticulously looking for good books. Whether they are comics, cookbooks, history or fiction, he has developed a standard he judges books by and it creates a very appealing selection. The second thing I noticed was the established order. I have been in used bookstores where stacks of unsorted books teeter as obstacles throughout the space and make it impossible to find anything (I’m not mentioning any names here). The Blue Plate is more like a library. The overall appeal is tough to do justice to, but on my last trip I overheard an exchange that helped put it in perspective. As I sat between the stacks thumbing through a book, I overheard the following conversation at the register. Customer- “I remember when I was a kid I loved comic books, I would read them all the time. Then one day my uncle Earl gave me a real book by Jack London. It was…” Cashier – “White Fang, Call of the Wild?” Customer – “Yes that was it, Call of the Wild. I remember looking at it and opening it and there were no pictures but since my uncle Earl had given it to me, I was going to read it. That was it for me, that’s all it took. I have been a reader ever since.” I chuckled because I have never heard that kind of exchange at other bookstores. It was a spontaneous expression of affection for the special outpost that the Blue Plate has become. It is a haven for readers.

As an avid reader living in Winchester Blue Plate books has been my go to place for literature. This place is a treasure trove of interesting titles, the owner seems to have read and owned all the books on his shelves. I went in looking for a book that fell under the category of Modernism, Women Writers, and preferably short for it was needed for a school project, he immediately pulled the play "A Raisin In the Sun" from a nearby shelf. It was perfect, a great place to find classics and your next favorite book.

Nice store, good selection. The books are in good condition. A sign on the front specifically mentions gentle used books. I was really happy with the condition and the price of the books I bought. The owner was friendly and knew his stock well. I asked if he had Inkheart and he was able to tell me the authors name and the section to look in without checking the computer. Well Organized! This was a major plus, its in alphabetical order by author and the sections are clearly defined, so nice!

I love this store! The books are mostly reasonably priced and the owner knows if he has a certain book or not. Hes friendly and knowledgeable. I have sometimes emailed him to inquire about a title and he always gives quick response. Books are organized; they are not strewn on shelves to where you have to search for something. I like to just stop and browse whats in stock because it is constantly changing. You certainly wont be disappointed.

An excellent bookstore that is worth visiting if youre in Winchester. It has a large variety of books, all in excellent condition. The employees are extremely helpful and friendly. The next time Im in this part of Virginia, Ill certainly make it a point to return.

This is an awesome, well-organized, second-hand bookstore with a large selection of every type of book! They have a great manga and comic book selection as well as a whole room devoted to childrens books. The staff is very knowledgeable and helpful.
