I am more disappointed in the Safeway at Harpers Farm Road in Columbia, Maryland than usual. I have owned two homes in nearby Hobbits Glen and shopped at this store for over 20 years. The state of this location as gone down dramatically over the years despite the good service of many employees. Today, I felt completely profiled by a cashier this your location. Before I even ran my card I was told I needed an ID. I was shopping for two orders, my mothers and my own. Of course I did not have an ID for her card, so I went ahead and put the two separate orders on my card. I was again asked for my ID for my own card which I did not have with me because I had forgotten my wallet but, I knew that I had the debit cards. I always use debit and had not even put my card through before stopped. When the cashier asked for a manager she was told very calmly, that if I was doing debit it was not your policy to ask for ID. (even if you feel suspicious, I assume) I have never seen a cashier ask for ID there before and in fact, since you are usually short staffed, I often use the automated register, which by the way does not check your ID on debit purchases. The cashier was not rude, but also not aware that her actions were demeaning. Even after I checked out she continued to discuss her views with the manager. I have talked with this employee and most of your cashiers frequently, so this incident was shocking! I would blame this incident on a lack of effective training in customer service, policy, and diversity. This situation makes me sad because my 87 year old Mom is most comfortable shopping there and she feels like she knows the staff(they know her by name and I am always with her) and how to find things. WE SPEND AT LEAST $500 A MONTH. I have not enjoyed shopping at Safeway for the past 10 years. Your recent efforts to improve lighting and the overall shopping experience are noticed but, I WILL NOT BE SHOPPING THERE AGAIN given the other nearby choices available, Davids, Whole Foods, Food Lion and Wegmans, where I feel welcomed. In addition to this experience, these are the issues I have with the Safeway at this location: 1. Dirty curbside appearance 2. Long check out lines 3. Broken self serve kiosks 4. Customer fighting 4. High ticket items unavailable on shelves 5. Lack of customer service available on the floor 6. Pharmacy hours I have no problem with being asked for ID as long it is a posted rule and consistent practice. IT IS FEELING PROFILED THAT I OBJECT TO.

For the love of all things holy, avoid this store. Like others have commented, its minutes from my house but I will now go to Giant or Whole Foods instead. If you are unfortunate enough to HAVE to go here, CHECK YOUR EXPIRATION DATES!! So many times Ive gotten home only to realize my hummus was expired 2 months ago!!! And the cheeses... and tortilla wraps... If you pay attention, youll find at least one or two expired things on the shelf. Every visit. And dont think itll help to point it out to an associate. They honestly could care less. Incorrect prices at the register. When I still went here, Id buy several packs of vegetarian hot dogs every visit. They are labeled as $3.99 "Every day low price" on the shelf. When they are rung up on the register, they are $4.99. I have pointed this out 6 VISITS, and no one has changed it. It creates a huge hassle. An associate has to do a price check, holding up the line and wasting everyones time. I point out they need to update their system every time. Once the cashier called for a manager over the phone. Next visit, still wrong, proving THEY ARE AWARE theyre ripping you off, and they arent going to do anything about it. Last straw - Our household saved our Cuisinart stamps for months for their promotion. When it was time to cash them in, we went to the store to pick up the cutting boards. They were out but we were told to check back the next day. We did. And 3 times after that. No cutting boards. The next time, I asked if there was some kind of list I could get my name put on. I waited 15 minutes to not only give my information to the associate by self check out, but also to a woman in customer service who assured me I would get a call. No one called. I stopped in today and the woman in customer service told me they already called all the numbers on their list. I was out of luck. Well, Safeway, you are out a customer. Get your act together.

It suits my very, very basic needs and its around the corner from my house. BUT, there is hardly EVERRRR more than 2 check out lines open and by that I mean, 4 self-serve registers and ONE "full service" lane open, 8/10 times I go. Ive patronized this store for the last 11 years.... Seriously, its like this all - the - time! When I used to buy (refrigerated) Kombucha from there, I once found an entire shelf of expired bottles. They were at least 10 days expired, some up to one month. I would then have to assume that no one even bothered to check them for at least that long and maybe much, much longer. I work at a "neighborhood grocery store" (we wear Hawaiian shirts) and rotation is a daily activity. Every time we stock new perishable items, we HAVE TO read the date on the items on the shelf and make sure nothing gets missed. We even rotate our back stock. The management here at this Safeway is lacking, to say the very very least. Do better. The ENTIRE SAFEWAY CHAIN must do better. Especially with competition just around the corner.

Rotting food sitting in the shelves. October 26, 2016 bought a pack of Lucern sweet cream butter, realized a few days later that it was moldy, checked expiration date: May 2016!!! My mistake for not checking the expiration date, but even if I had checked, that is butter sitting next to and being stored with rotton butter. Salad mix is frequently expired or on its last day, vegetables rot within a day or 2, if they arent growing mold right on the shelf. Have picked up a piece of fruit in the store only to have a bunch of fruit flies fly from under it! Moldy onions, rotten potatoes, slimy black salad mix, undercooked baked goods, lunch meat from the deli that feels and smells rotten the day you bought it, meats that are packaged to hide brown and sometimes green sections, now rotten dairy products. Checking the expiration date is useless if the food is being cross contaminated by rotting food sitting right next to it. Gross. Run.

Store provides the bare minimum of customer service. They often close the customer service window because they are short staffed - or, when it is open - theres no one standing there because theyre trying to run a register at the same time. The number of registers open varies from time to time, but its usually never as many as you would find at Giant or Wegmans. Their stores are also more up-to-date, and cleaner. Refrigerator cases frequently break down, and the register belts are worn, and usually dirty. Theres NEVER any kind of curb-side service - EVER. Unlike Giant and Wegmans that often have people standing out front to help, this store provides nothing unless you ask, and then they have to pull someone from what theyre doing, and it takes forever. All in all, not a good place to shop if you can go to another village center. I suggest Giant at Hickory Ridge. Shop both stores, compare, and youll see what I mean.
