Not only has Lemoi Ace Hardware been here since 1885, it is still run by the same family. They see beyond just another sale and instead build relationships with their customers. I do not go to Lemoi for price, or selection (they are competitive on both) or even because it is conveniently located in Downtown Evanston - I go there because the long term employees (Some as much as 22 years) genuinly give a damn about what I need to fix, not what they need to sell. I go there to seek advice - and parts from Scott, Al, Dale, Rich and the others - all familiar faces from visit to visit - who actually recognize ME as a client - not just a walking wallet. Thanks guys for keeping a rich tradition of service alive.

Tell you what. Ive been to this ACE several times since we moved to Evanston 6 months ago, and they are, hands down, THE nicest, most helpful staff I have ever seen at a hardware store or any other kind of store for that matter. I dont like going to the hardware store, and DIY is not my thing at all, but these guys make it a pleasure to go there. They never make you feel silly for not knowing things and will give you all kinds of great advice. If there were a rating better than "Excellent" I would give it. Thank goodness theres a place like this that gives you great service and saves you from going to Home Depot. Support these guys and keep them in business.

Im here a lot for various odd jobs. Ill come here over Home Depot ANY DAY. Not only is it conveniently located, but they have a better selection per square foot than HD, their prices, for the most part, are just as good and sometimes better (the Ace brand is often made by reputable companies and their products are great), and most importantly, the staff are helpful, knowledgeable, and friendly. I cant count the number of times Ive had to return defective items to HD because they didnt bother to inspect returned purchases and just stick them back on the shelf. Thats never happened to me here. Ace Lemoi is the best example of a neighborhood store!

I have been depending on Lemoi for years, principally for the excellent, knowledgeable, friendly service. The prices are fair enough and the added value more than worth any slight cost disadvantage from the big box "why am I wasting my time searching alone through endless aisles" alternatives. In my experience, even if they dont have a solution for you, they will steer you toward one. They have even steered me away from a purchase and recommended repair instead, when appropriate. This is the kind of neighborhood store that operates on the basis of trust in and from the community... and works hard to earn that trust.

THE best. Knowledgeable staff. Varied inventory. I want the faux wicker rocker. Need some big bags of Scotts mulch (which, the cashier assured me could be loaded into my car for me). No waste wild bird seed. Fannies (of old Evanston fame) Original recipe meat sauce! Cleaning supplies. Coffee filters. Great greeting cards that arent the usual Hallmark or American Greeting card (Koch owned) stuff. How long would it take me to find all that stuff at Home Depot? A LONG time! (secret for dog owners...theyre welcome in the store and theyll get a biscuit!)

If you are one of the people that complain about there no longer being family owned stores then go here. This store is still run by a Lemoi and much of the staff has been there for about 20 years. Yeah, I will be frank not everyone is knowledgeable about everything, but they do try to find out the answer for you when they can. Especially Scott. He has worked there about 22 years and is always willing to help. My ownly bit of advice would be to not go there on a Sunday if you have plumbing questions. Their plumbing expert is not there.

For a place that tries to differentiate from its competition based on customer service, it sure leaves alot to be desired. The staff at the cashiers are always friendly and nice. Its not that the technical staff in the back isnt nice, it just seems that they never go out of their way to be friendly and helpful. They are very gruff and act like they are doing the customer a favor. I keep going back because I like to shop local, but they are testing my patience...

update: 7/2017: still wonderful store and clerks I have been shopping/buying at this wonderful friendly store forever (35 yrs?). Rarely ever have to go elsewhere for some hardware or houseware item. Prices are terrific, convenient location, very friendly knowledgeable staff, plenty of parking and right down the street from Bennisons Bakery where you can reward yourself with something delicious.

Bad customer service; called to see if item was there before I took transit to the location. Was assured item was in stock only to get there and be told that it wasnt in stock. Waste of time; to add insult to injury, unhelpful employee simply shrugged like it was no skin of his nose. Well, I guess it wasnt since he wasnt the one who wasted carfare.

This is an old Evanston business that has served the neighborhood for over 40 years. Great store with a high service level. Lots of knowledgeable people ready to help. I like that I can run in and out quickly. The time saved is worth the quarter needed for the parking meter.

Well stocked neighborhood hardware store. A nice balance of bulk fasteners, plumbing or electrical supplies, tools, gardening supplies and kitchenware supports the small city of Evanston and the students of Northwestern University.

Very sexist. If you are female, this is not The Helpful Place. Go to the Home Depot on Oakton. Ive been there many times. Ive come out with my purchase, possibly some advice and zero attacks to my worth as a human being.
