Today, my son, 8 years old, and I visited the organization hoping to get his front brake on his bike repaired. I learned of the organization through a Google search. The repair service to his bike was excellent. The adult service technician and his understudy student were professional, quick, and knowledgeable. However, several youth workers that were seated outside the facility were very disrespectful and lacked courtesy to customers. While waiting outside in the drive/entry way for my sons bike to be repaired, young women and men were perpetually speaking abusive words towards one another i.e. profanity and racial terms. Their behavior persisted even when gently corrected by their peer and when the abuser apologizing to my son and myself. Although I was disappointed in the youths behavior, I also realize we are all evolving. I commend the community and organization for providing an outlet for the youth to acquire great technical, business and social skills by working/volunteering at a bicycle repair shop.

I live in the neighborhood and have been to Blackstone Bikes several times. They have always been friendly, competent, and extremely reasonable on their prices. They have a dual role, helping to empower neighborhood kids working on their own bikes (always a swarm of highly engaged kids outside in their yard), as well as being a general service public bike shop. The hours displayed for Google are a bit misleading. When I went in at 11 AM Friday they said they did not open to the public until 1PM, and the 10 AM listed on Google was for the neighborhood kids. Still, after I pointed out the hours posted on Google, they took in my bike anyway. They do fine basic repairs. They are a great source of used bikes, and have lots of inexpensive used parts. (The excellent part.) They do not apparently stock a large supply of high-end new parts, but they are happy to order things, so call ahead if you want such things from them.

I came there on Friday to replace my bike breaks. He looked at my bike and told me to come next week because he has a lot of work. The following week I came again and waited 15 min. that he will finish to talk on the phone. Then, he looked at my bike for one sec. and said he cannot do it, without too much explanation. I asked him why he told me to come over after he already looked at my bike before, and he reply that he says a lot of things and he cannot remember..

I WANT to like this place, because its good for the hood and the kids, but it sucks as a bike shop. Ive been there half a dozen times to see a veritable cornicopia of bikes. When asked about one between 49 and 58cm I was turned away. This has happened EVERY time Ive been. This place seems to be helpful ONLY when they arent overwhelmed by the energetic child-staff. Good luck getting something done in a timely fashion, or even AT ALL.

As far as finding the bike i want to get when i go up there usally they dont have it but they will some how some way come with a way to get me what i want. its a no profit so i dont expect them to sell new bikes that have parts thats hard to find they still get vthem for me in a days worth time. the kids are great and the service is even better. i would have to say Blackstone is the best bike shop in the chicago area.

The prices are exceptionally reasonable. They work on your bike on the spot and do a good job in an average time for a low price. Theyre pretty friendly and casual. The service wasnt perfect, unfortunately - I went in for a brake exchange and while they brake just fine, they squeal like all hell. The internet suggests that squealing can be a tricky problem to fix on some bikes, though, so Im not complaining too much.

I went here to get a squeaky brake repaired. They fixed the brake, pumped up the tires, lubricated the chain, and even threw in a bottle of chain lube for a grand total of twelve bucks. It looks a little sketchy on the outside (the main entrance is a nearly unmarked door behind a chain-link fence) but everyone there is really friendly and helpful. Highly recommended.

I went in a few days ago to buy a bike. The staff was very helpful and seemed very knowledgeable. The prices were relatively cheap, and I was able to get exactly what I was looking for. Im very satisfied. Id definitely go there again. The only problem was that the place was a little hard to find, but just use Google Streetview and youll get it.

Blackstone Bikes is wonderful. I feel like Im helping the cause and also promoting local businesses. I needed a full tune up and thankfully, I had someone to help me with all my issues. Theres a constant flow of young kids volunteering at BB and the staff is so kind. The service I got was quick and prompt. I had a great experience here!

This bicycle shop is a magical place. If you blink, you will miss it. I came here looking for a small part and saw bicycle mechanics teaching and helping community children. BTW, they had the part and Chris sold it to me for 50 cents. I plan on trusting this shop with any future bicycle repairs that I might need.

These young men and women have a very special place. I am grateful to have been able to come to know of it existence. They know what there were doing. They worked on my Schwinn, and were skilled at an expert level enough to train others. Thank you Mello and JT, thank you young lady at the register.

Great customer service fast service. Children repairing bikes I think its a wonderful thing. My husband and I took our bikes to get the tire repaired not expensive in my opinion and asked if they would raise my handlebars they did with no charge. Im taking my grandsons bike

Found my perfect bike the minute I got inside the gate. I wanted to take away 1 star since the price of my lock was highway robbery, but my perfect bike was $150 after tax, so it evens out. Also, amazing mission with the kids & community improvement. I loved it! :-)

Super friendly and knowledgeable staff, great deals, and a good community-based cause. If you want a wide selection make sure to get there early on Saturday, as the bikes sell quickly!

Sweet set up for the kids! Unfortunately its unusably slow. The staff is irresponsible and the repairs dont get finished. Dont bring your bike here if you ever want it back.
