My writing group, the Atlanta Speculative Fiction Worldbuilding and Writing Workshop (ASFW3), met here for our first six months, including every Sunday during NaNoWriMo. Considering that we were initially bringing a large amount of business to Java Monkey every first and third Sunday of the month, we thought considerate service from staff would be fair. However, nearly every time we ordered, we were greeted with scowling faces and grumpy attitudes. Other complaints range from incredibly loud music that cant be cancelled safely by headphones (and when we asked to have it turned down, the staff reacted rudely, glared at me, and didnt turn it down), horrendous smells of sewage and soured cloth, dirty tables and furniture, and roaches... Thats right, roaches. In fact, near the electrical outlet, as of today, there have been two dead roaches there for a month and a half. The staff has been notified no less than three times over the course of the last month and a half. That is disgusting and unacceptable from any business, much less a business that serves food.

This was my trip to Java Monkey here in downtown Decatur Square. Today was a "girls day out" with my sister and 2 nieces ages 9 and 4. They are lovers of coffee if you can believe that. The youngest was in a bad mood and feeling blue. Graham, our charming and perceptive barista have Kennedy a small cup of whipped cream to eat. Instantly she was happy and cheerful and said to my sister that videos and whipped cream make everything better! We all laughed but we were so grateful to Graham for being so nice. Catherine was our other barista and she was so nice and welcoming. They had the idea to make the girls Cappuccinos decaf and gave the little one a mini Cap. How cute! Such a lovely and quaint little cafe with plenty of places to sit. There is wine and outdoor seating as well as free wifi. If you dont care for coffee they also offer a nice selection of Ardens Garden juice as well as pastries and cakes. This is a nice place to unwind or catch up with friends. Thanks again to Graham and Catherine for their hospitality. :)

This seems to be a café for locals. That being said, it was a nice place for an outsider to visit. The staff members were friendly and conversational. Just dont come in expecting to strike up a conversation with a stranger. Of course, this was a weekday. It is a multi-level space with optional outdoor seating. This appeared to extend from a room with a bar The atmosphere was quiet in the early afternoon, with the area closer to the door being utilized for conversation and the upper level room with the bar being used for studying, working, and painting. I have no idea whether this is the norm or not. . Based on my one order, they wont skimp when it comes to your drink. It was filled to the brim :). They offer tea, coffee, hot chocolate, baked goods and a short, presumably-operated-at-night, bar. I recommend the visit. There are a number of chic restaurants in the area too.

We used to love this place, but this last time, weve decided were not coming back. The food is great, the espresso is eh, but the music is generally terrible. Tonight especially, was terrible. Whenever the two guys work together, one always wearing a cap and the other with glasses, the music is terrible and loud, and just too jarring. I understand that a lot of shops will play what they want and thats fine, but when youre trying to run a good coffee place, where a lot of people will go to study and have a good cool down from their day, I highly doubt playing Skinny Puppy and other less enjoyable bands will keep the people rolling in. I honestly dont think well be coming back anymore because it was just too much, these guys always kill the vibe. Sorry.

Love this place!!! Especially Friday nights the barista that works there is awesome ( I forgot her name ). There service is fast and efficient. They get you exactly what you need and arent picky about how long youre there for. Everyone does there own thing and I love the punk rock they have playing sometimes. A few glasses of Protocolo or Tempranillo gets you in the mood for Egyptian lover. Although Im sad they changed up some of the wine choices because there was this one I really liked and I forgot its name but remember it buy the way the bottle looks. Other then wine the smoothies and the chai tea is delicious. I love it during the fall and winter time the most. Its just perfect!

The Java Monkey is a cute little coffee shop in a cute little area of Atlanta. I visited here 3 times during a 3 day stay in Decatur over Fourth of July weekend. The interior is quite cozy, the staff friendly, and they even have a lovely outdoor patio. All the coffee appears to be ethically traded, which is certainly a plus. Also, I found their banana walnut bread to be quite delicious indeed. Therefore, let it be known that when next I need a caffeine infusion and am in the Decatur area, I shall be calling on a Monkey of the Java variety.

Excellent drip coffee and lattes. Im not a fan of the live music in the evening, but Im glad someone still offers the once ubiquitous coffee house venue. During the day however the music played is simply the best selection of punk / industrial / reggaeton 2.0 and alternative classics from the 80s and 90s. All public music can get annoying but compared to other shops around town, this place has the best balance conducive for focusing on work. The breakfast sandwiches are great. I usually get the h&f croissant with egg cheese veggie sausage and

Im in town after moving away 4 years ago. Staying in a motel down the street and was excited to walk to Java Monkey get my morning fix and support a local business as opposed to the Starbucks a few blocks away. The coffee is pretty good, a tad bitter, as usual the shop itself has great ambience, but the people working here were unfriendly; the guy/gal in the pretty dress seemed put out that I asked to see the ingredients of the dark chocolate (I have food allergies-sorry). Anyways, at least Ive got my caffeine.

The BEST latte. Its been my preference since 2005. The famous franchise a block away cant hold a candle to Java Monkeys latte and pour coffee. Their house made banana bread is the tastiest!!!! Breakfast biscuit with your choice of meat, cheese, egg is wonderful. Lunch soups and sandwiches will leave you satisfied. Hours will suit every schedule. Indoor and outdoor seating plus music and/or poetry some evenings. An asset to Downtown Decatur. I dont know what the negative reviews are talking about.

When is this place going to fix the wifi? Its been terrible for years, and the one time I approached the owner about it she expressed ambivalence. ATM is always busted, but you have to buy at least $5 to use a debit card to pay. This is why I usually go to Joes East Atlanta. Also the art is just terrible. Im sitting here right now remembering why I dont ever come here. And hoping this review will actually get posted and not time out on this terrible wifi.

So, I decided to go outside of my normal routine and try a local coffee shop-and I was quite pleased. Java Monkey has an old coffee house feel, very reminiscent of my college years in the late 90s. I ordered a Hazelnut Macchiatto and its pretty tasty. I like my lattes pretty strong-so Ill have to ask for a double or triple shot of espresso next time..But I will definitely be back. OH and they have a wine bar too! Coffee, wine and art-what a perfect combination!!
