Beware buying prescription drugs here if your insurance is Medicare Part D. Colonial Pharmacy in Westport has been listed as a preferred pharmacy on my Aetna Medicare Part D Plan for both 2015 and 2016, and Ive been getting my prescriptions filled there since the beginning of last year. Starting a few months ago, theyve been charging me more than what my insurance indicated should be my co-pay on certain (but not all) drugs. Theyve said this was necessary to "cover their costs". Until my experience a couple of days ago, this additional charge was at most $10 for a prescription, annoying but not enough to make me want to switch pharmacies. Two days ago, however, I submitted a prescription for a cortisone ointment for a skin condition. I knew from checking my Aetna Part D coverage online that my cost should be around $3. Colonial called me to say they were going to charge me over $80 for this because they couldnt otherwise cover their costs. I went in and asked them to give me back the prescription. I then took it to Walgreens (where I had an account from years prior to 2015 that was still valid) and got the prescription filled for $3. I have raised this issue with a Choices Counsellor who works with seniors to make choices on their Medicare Part D coverage She advised me that when the pharmacy contracts with the Pharmacy Benefit Manager (Aetna) it agrees to accept the contracted rate. What Colonial is doing is essentially balance billing which violates the contractual agreement. I do intend to bring this to Aetnas attention.

The prices at Colonial are on par with national chain pharmacies, and they offer a wide range of specialty items in the store. The problem is the counter staff at this pharmacy. If a doctor calls in a prescription, they refuse to check if its been received. You cannot deal with them over the phone, so it always requires a trip to the store, just to get someone to look on your behalf, and then be told its not been received. The pharmacists themselves are the most helpful and knowledgeable individuals, but they cannot make up for the lack of service by the staff. We want to support local, but we are switching our business to other local pharmacies just so we can have timely access to our medications.

I had an excellent experience renting a nebulizer for my toddler. The one thing that was a bit annoying was that the doctor had called the prescription in hours prior to me attempting to pick it up and it had not been filled so I had to wait for 30 minutes before actually being able to take it. This was a small thing, and I would certainly use them again!

Great, knowledgable staff. Highly recommend. Not your typical chain pharmacy. Awesome with surgical needs.
