I bought 3 lbs. of ground round this morning, 9/26/10, at the Grist Mill Country Market. When I opened the package , I found out that about 1/4 of the meat was about 3-4 days old. It was very dark brown and smelled bad. The rest of the meat was bright red and fresh. I brought it back to the store and the young girl who waited on me apologized, She went in the back and a man who looked middle eastern (I think hes either the manager or the butcher) came out and I told him that I wanted all fresh meat. The meat was in a plastic bag. He said that only a portion of the meat was bad - he wanted to just take off the brown part and replace that! I told him that the brown part smelled really bad and I didnt know if the whole bag had gotten contaminated. He looked very angry that I wanted the whole 3 lbs. of meat replaced. And heres the worst part - just after the young girl had gotten me the fresh meat, the guy broke off the brown part of the returned meat and put the rest of it back into the display case! Just so you all know, I owned a restaurant on the shoreline for over 10 years and was a certified food handler so I know what youre supposed to do and not supposed to do with food. Our motto was always "When in doubt, throw it out". Obviously the Grist Mill hasnt heard of that saying and would rather make their customers ill. Yes, its nice to have another market in Higganum center but I wont be buying any meats there after today. Hope no one got sick after eating the ground round from Grist Mill today.

This market is now called the Village Market, having changed hands around June 2013. Because it is now under different management, any review appearing below that predates June 2013. whether good or bad, is no longer relevant. It is a local market (not to be compared to Stop & Shop) and those of us who live in the area find it very, very convenient to have this market and are happy to use it. Price-wise it cannot compete with Stop & Shop un Middletown, but it carries lines of food not available elsewhere and its existence is important to our community, including the other shops that surround it. Furthermore, the time and gas money saved from not having to go all the way to Middletown does make a difference.

This is the best thing to happen to downtown Higganum in a very long time. It is so convenient and really quite reasonably priced for the quality products they sell. It is similar to having a Whole Foods right in town. If you are looking for gluten free food you will find an alternative to almost any product. I hope this market stays around for a long time.

STAY AWAY! -- 7/9/17 Unless you like poor quality meats, near rotten overpriced produce, and at best indifferent but mostly nasty customer service...I kept trying to find some reason to support this local business but have consistently found the above to be the normal...Dont do these people any favors take you money somewhere else.

They have an interesting selection. They dont have that many name brands you would find in larger grocery stores, but have many small name products which are usually only found online.
