The store is great if you wnat to be able to try some dresses on that actually fit you, but Id go elsewhere for alterations. I had a very similar experience to the previous bride on here who spoke about alterations. Gabriela is nice, and I could tell she wanted to try to make me happy, but we just could never get on the same page. I wanted to add custom bolero lace style straps to the dress, so Gabriela told me to go out and look for fabric and she would do that for $120. I didnt end up finding lace but I ended up finding beading with a tulle backing that better matched the style of the dress. The beading needed a backing to give it more structure so it would lay nicely as a strap. I wanted the backing to be sewn in the shape of beading - Gabriela told me $80 for that. I tried multiple times to explain what I wanted but eventually had to give up. My wedding in less than 3 weeks away and I hope that I can find someone to help fix it. Its all hand sewing that I may be able to do myself but I really was hoping to be able to pay to have it done. Fitting 1: (11 weeks before wedding) Dropped off the dress, pinned up all the changes that need to be made to the bodice. Told to go look for fabric for the straps. Fitting 2: (9 weeks before wedding) Dropped off the strap fabric. Tried the dress on again with all the pins still in it - no alterations had been made yet. I figured it was still early so I figured that was no big deal. Fitting 3: (5 weeks before wedding) I thought all the alterations were going to be complete but the straps werent even connected to the dress. Sides were taken in. Fitting 4: (3.5 weeks before wedding) Beaded straps were just sewn onto the dress with no lining at all. I tried to explain myself again and thought we were on the same page. I also wondered why she thought I would be ok with paying $80 for that amount of work. Dress seemed too tight this time. I am a size 2-4 so I dont have a lot of extra fat, but my skin was bulging on the sides above the bodice. I had to insist that that it probably shouldnt be like that. Fitting 5: (3 weeks before wedding) Straps were sewn onto a ribbon of fabric that wasnt even as wide as the beading. The straps werent sewn symmetrically onto the dress and there were some sections were it looked like she just forgot to finish stitching so it didnt lay very well against me. Again, just not at all what I asked for. I understand that what I want requires some more delicate hand sewing, but I was willing to pay for that - if she had wanted more money to do what I was asking, she just had to ask. Instead it felt like she just didnt listen or if she had listened, just didnt feel like doing what I was hoping for. I dont think she really takes any notes to help her remember. She ended up only charging for the taking in of the bodice which I appreciated. At the end I just figured I had better go somewhere else while there was a chance I could find another place to help fix it. I hate writing negative reviews, but hopefully it helps prevent someone elses frustration.

The Altar in Lakewood is pretty freakin awesome. If youre on a budget and looking to spend less than a thousand bucks on a gown, this is one place you MUST check out. I was a little hesitant to go here because some reviews said the dresses were dirty, but I have no idea where people got that because all the dresses I tried on were like new and perfectly clean. All but the $199 and under dresses and new arrivals are kept in plastic garment bags. Going to The Altar is not at all like shopping at a regular consignment store — no musty smell and everything is nearly new. I was eavesdropping on the girls who work there, and apparently they price dresses three years old or newer at half of what they originally retailed for (except in the case of heavily marked down Davids Bridal gowns). My dress needed no alterations except a bustle, but their seamstresss prices were very reasonable. The girls working there were helpful and sweet but not overbearing AT ALL. You can put the dress on yourself, but they will help you zip it up. Even the other customers were super nice and told me how beautiful I looked. All in all, I found that I enjoyed the consignment store experience WAY more than the other "regular" bridal stores I shopped at because I had so many more options — including more high-end dresses at 1/2 price. I ended up finding two awesome gowns and finally decided on one that made me feel AWESOME. It turned out to be a brand-new dress from the manufacturer, and I got out of there for under $500. Does it get any better than that? Cant wait to wear it on my wedding day! If you havent tried The Altar yet, you must.

I had some pretty horrible experiences up until I walked into this shop. I had honestly thought the dress really only needed to be done about 3 months prior to the wedding date. We have a July wedding, and most of the stores werent trying to help me in any way... and tried to sell me clearanced dresses that needed a LOT of work. One $100 was going to be over $500 from just a little bit of tailoring, not to mention they were trying to sqeeze me into crap I couldnt fit into. There were about 5 dresses I found here to try on. I put a A&T Lotus dress on, and cried. It fit PERFECT! Better than any pair of gloves I had ever had. Because most of the tailoring was done, I am short so I just need a minor hem alteration, I know I saved over $1000 on this dress. After my alteration it wont be over $500... and is MUCH better than anything I had ever hoped to be able to afford. I definately reccomend this shop. They have a reasonably priced tailor they work directly with, and you can probably find something that is almost perfect fit just like me! 2 of the 5 dresses fit almost the same... I just chose my favorite. I am glad to know there is a store like this out there. Best of all, when I am done... I can bring it back and re-consign it and maybe sell it for 1/2 my money back! That is cheaper than trying to rent an over-sized bridal gown! Good luck ladies!

I had really given up on the idea of being able to have a real wedding gown for my very small non traditional wedding. I feel that I should not spend as much money on a dress as I spending on the whole wedding. That being said I want more than anything to be a "real bride" on our wedding day even if we are not having a big event. All of the real wedding gowns I loved are all $2000 and up, so it seemed that I would have to settle for not feeling like a real bride on my wedding day. However, I drive by the alter all the time and this last weekend I figured Id stop in and see what was there. The staff (Victoria and Tiffany in particular) was so friendly and welcoming... I went by myself but I felt immediately like I had supportive friends with me! Victoria was very patient and helped me get in and out of dresses... and within 40 mins I had found a gown that I never even imagined... it was unlike anything I had considered yet it was everything I wanted. Victoria set me up on the pedestal and took photos for me and I felt like I princess! My dress originally retailed at $2000 I paid only $599! Plus I can sell it back to them for half that price! This was the best possible experience I could have imagined! I cant wait to show off pictures wearing it when my day (April 29th!) comes! I have already recommended the alter to everyone who will listen!
