I live in Manitou Springs and for us, Safeway is the cloest grocery store. The first time I went inside the Colorado Avenue Safeway was about a year ago and I walked out empty handed. I thought the place was creepy and overpriced. Its dimly lit like a basement and just being in there feels like Im shopping in somebodys house. The prices are truly mind blowing, even with their card holder savings options. Anyways, my brakes went out on my car over this past weekend, and I didnt feel like taking the bus all the way to King Soopers so I decided to give Safeway another go... I dont know why I dont listen to my gut. It was such a waste of time. Even knowing I had 45 minutes until my bus returned, I STILL walked out empty handed. I had been in the store for nearly 10 minutes and the only thing I had in my cart was a bag of potatos and some tortillas...once I realized I had made my rounds through the entire store and only found two afdordable items I simply walked away from my cart, and got the hell out of there. Yesterday, I took the bus to King Soopers had a BRIGHT and wonderful shopping experience (they truly are WholeFoods without the prices!!) left with 4 bags of groceries and only spent $27!!!! Now. Ive asked and Ive asked....... How do they do it!? How does Safeway stay in business with places like King Soopers only a couple miles down the road? People tell me Safeway is for rich people.....but since when do rich people shop in places like that? I would assume they would just go to Whole Foods if theyre paying those prices anyways. Safeway is seriously THE WORST! I have never felt hate like this for a grocery store.......but they seriously suck. The store is small. The prices are high. The employees only acknowledge you if theyre dropping boxes of food all over the floor where youre trying to walk. Their kids Lunchables are more than twice as much as anywhere else in the springs; just to give you a example of their pricing.

Safeway (West Colo)the employees have always given us excellent service with rare exception. We like going there. And I definitely like being able to get some organic foods including the produce.I feel the produce department is trying real hard to provide this side of town with quality products. Especially, the service Ive had from the regular Pharmacy personnel has been extremely helpful to me during my on going illness. The only reason I put 4 instead 5 was last year and new guy who I didnt know and didnt know me slammed metal gate down as I was holding back as is the custom at all pharmacies while he finished with the customer he was waiting on. I said "Hey wait a minute Ive been standing here waiting a flu shot with paper filled out"! His response was "Too bad come back tomorrow" Im handicap and thats not so easy for me. I can usually find everything I need in way groceries at Safeway with rarely having to go get something not carried. I dont do price shopping because its not carried. The few dollars saved since Im not that mobile isnt worth it. Im doing this review because I looked up delivery which I now need becease of the treatment Im getting AGAIN, can be in around a lot people fot awhile. And I saw the rating on the store and I thought I needed say something really good about the Safeway we really like shopping at and employees that being taking good care of us.

It was 3 hours before close and I had a large basket to purchase and waited behind 3 other people. When it was my turn I noticed my tortillas rang up much higher than the sign said. (They were on sale for 3packs for $5.00) They rang up at 4.29 each. I told the cashier and he said he would get someone. No one ever came. I told the cashier (after I paid of course) Id leave my basket with him and go check the price myself. So turns out I was correct, they were on sale 3 for 5. I returned to the cashier and told him I was correct but he had 4 or 5 full baskets in line already so I chose to take my 2 items and go to the only other register that was open, the express lane. So, she rang up the person in front of me, switched off her light, told me she was closed and went out the front door and lit a cigarette. Leaving me to get back in the line behind 4 or 5 full baskets with only 2 packs of tortillas. That was totally unacceptable. Very rude. I will be contacting the management about this today. I will not be spending any more money there for awhile.

I have been meaning to write this for sometime. My experience at the story has been similar every time I go, but today... well it was bad. In general the staff at the store in old Colorado City are the most unmotivated set of union workers I have ever met. I usually go to Wal-Mart on 8th street, and we all know Wal-Mart staff (when is my break???) But the Safeway staff are rude, unkempt and have no customer service skills what so ever. Example: today- I was in the self check out lanes, the gal working the counter left, there were four customers ,,each had an issue, when she returned we all look at her and she shakes her head and said to the first person ":whats the problem" ... The 2nd "what do you need" She didnt even say hello to me, she acted as if I was a pain and stupid.. If you dont mind paying more and getting treated poorly then please shop there...

Im voting this as the W sides worst! Worst store manager, and security is a joke, with the guy following you like the CIA through the store. Pitiful, Im actually more embarrassed for them than anything. So many people on the W side are forced to go to that location, and unfortunately there are a lot of homeless people, so they are just rude to everyone! I got a $25 gift card from a manager on the lower end of the totem pole because he didnt want to confront his store manager, which is who my complaint was about. Too scared to do the right thing..... wow.... not to mention its YOUR JOB! More than one bad experience at this store, Ill just stick with King Soopers, and yes, even WalMart, to avoid this Safeway location. I dont know if they just assume that everyone in there has bad intentions, not sure whatsup with the rude and disrespectful behavior.... really though.

While I find expectations of many people in this area unrealistic and I often find reviews of area consumer establishments either suffering from the halo effect or just downright nasty and cruel, I will say I am a reviewer who is generally realistic, positive, and optimistic. That said, today I found the employees at the checkout, aisle stockers, and pharmacists chock full of humor, sincerity, helpfulness, and all-around exemplary customer service. I appreciate it. And I can dream of a world where reviewers and shoppers pause for a moment to check if their words, attitudes, expectations, and behaviors are adding to an issue or creating an issue that didnt exist previously.
