Back in the 1970s-1980s, Santa Rosa had lovely fabric stores like New York Fabrics and House of Fabrics. The stores were beautifully clean, organized and well-staffed by pleasant, skilled sewers. They had a good selection of a variety of fabrics including bridal, every-day textiles and notions. One by one, these treasured stores disappeared from our town, leaving us with only one choice - the JoAnns national chain of stores. When I need fabric, its the only local place to go, and both my mother and I always come away wishing we could go back in time so that shopping for fabrics would be a pleasurable experience again. JoAnns is a poorly organized, poorly-laid out store with inadequate lighting and a lack of staff. Lines at the cutting table and counters are always so long, simply because there are not enough staff on hand to handle the huge amount of business that goes through this store every day. The inventory is tipped too far in the balance toward novelty and quilting items (fleece, calico, etc.) and the huge section of craft/gift/home decor items takes up half the store. Santa Rosa has quilting stores and crafting stores, but only one fabric store. If JoAnn would devote that whole home decor section to fabrics, they could really improve the variety in their inventory so that sewers could find things like bastiste, muslin, leno, voile, lawn, poplin, linen, etc. in a rainbow of color choices and prints rather than a meager 1 or 2 bolts of fabric (if were lucky!). Why not have a whole rack of 40 different corduroys rather than 6 of them, or velvets in ALL colors instead of 5 jewel tones? Our choices are so limited because JoAnns devotes so much space to quilting and crafting instead of actual fashion sewing. My mother sewed bridal wear professionally for years, and she had to go to Britex in San Francisco for fabrics because JoAnns simply didnt have the fine fabrics she needed. So much could be done to upgrade this store into a beautiful place for sewers to shop. JoAnns should stop cutting corners with the dim lights and lack of service people. The store should look beautiful and clean...not like a heap of rubble reminiscent of Ross in Santa Rosa. You walk out feeling depressed and headache-y instead of thrilled and happy about your sewing project. In my book, thats a poor experience. If a small business fabric store would open in Sonoma County that truly took care of its customers by offering them fashion fabrics (not craft supplies) in a pleasant environment, Id pay higher prices to shop there. Not that JoAnns is a bargain store, despite its bargain store atmosphere. Their prices are not cheap, but, at present, theyre the only choice we have. Anyone who loves to sew deserves better! Dont you think?

not real sure this post will help...because the same problem i have with the santa rosa store seem to go back to at least 2009.....my last four visits (no other fabric stores in my area to choose from) have been bad....bad customer service..the young employes spend more talking to each other then helping customers...you have 5 or 6 customers in line to check out with one maybe two cashiers...you have to search out an employee if you need help....asked where the velcro was located...the girl pointed...my daughter in law who doesnt sew asked an employee what hook and loop tape was...she was shown hook and eye bra extensions....that same visit i asked the cashier how long the 99 cent patterns were on sale....she said she wasnt sure and directed me to the flyers at the end of the counter...really....on one occasion the customer in front of me turned and said...i hate coming here...i wouldnt if i didnt have to....that may not hurt your $$...but it does hurt your reputation.....a couple more examples....two girls working the cutting table spent several minutes talking to each other...while customers were waiting for their number to be called...one to the other....have you put any of those bolts away today...the other laughed....and said nope....the stack wasat least four tiers high....while looking thru the yarn aisle an employee came out of the back...offices i expect.... she ran across another employee near the door....they spent at least 5 minutes talking $#%@** about another employee....i was not 3 feet from their conversation....not right.....i have never done this before....reviewed a retail company...but i feel i needed to get this off my mind......just because you have no competition in a city of 150k you should want to give us the service we deserve.....clean up the store...pay attention to your employees behavior....and care

Been here three times now, and each experience was awful. Rude, unknowledgeable staff, extremely slow, and not one employee gives any indication they care one bit about providing decent customer service. They couldnt answer one single question I asked, and instead of doing a lookup or flagging down a coworker, theyd just shrug and walk away. Stay away. Their limited selection of fabrics isnt worth the headache.

Despite the fact that I found what I was looking for, this was the absolute worse JoAnns Ive ever been in, including the old one in Tucson. Add to that, no bags with the new CA law. As a newcomer, I was not prepared for a law covering retail as well as grocery bagging. The store was dim and dirty; the carts were designed by Satan so I used my arms. I could have bought more with a functioning cart.

I met a great employee named Monica yesterday . She was simply amazing! Trotted me around the store to help me find a variety of things I needed, since Ive recently moved up here, needed to decorate for Christmas without breaking the bank - especially since not yet totally unpacked. Im sooo happy I shopped there!

In here pretty often for crafts and yarn, and really good selection. The staff is limited, so if it’s busy it can be hard to talk to someone. Really liked the email list because I get coupons emailed to me and that’s saved me some money, so sign up for it. Otherwise, pretty good store.

Great selection, lower prices than Michaels for sure, far better customer service & located around other shops that may have accessories to crafts that it doesnt carry.

They have a low variety of items and they advertise falsely like claiming products that are real are really just synthetic, there just not the real deal.
