Bookstores need as much curation as a museum: the choosing and display of quality books, sane and fair pricing, the sense that discoveries can be made as well as the expected collections and topics. However the atmosphere should be inviting enough that book browsers feel to chat. A fine bookstore is a place to make new friends. It is the source of connection with authors and artists and, maybe, like Century, musicians. In my youth that bookstore was the Gotham Bookmart on 47th street in Manhattan. it too was small and had mostly used books but it was a refuge for true readers. The owners add another dimension of friendship and familiarity. We have reading apps and downloads but the soul of a place still counts. It allows us to feel that reading and thinking matter.

Probably one of the best used book store in Pasadena. Feels like youre walking into a bookstore from the early 1900s. Has a great selection of rare, vintage books. The owners are very welcoming. They go out of their way to make sure youre comfortable and have a great shopping experience. Prices are fair. Of course rare books are going to be a bit more costly but definitely worth the price. Something interesting about the building is that according to the owners Einstein visited the building when he was staying in Pasadena. Also, if youre into jazz they host live jazz bands on some Saturdays. Just make sure to ask ahead of time. Overall a great store with history and music. Highly recommended.

Fabulous used and rare book store. Owners Judy and Steve are the best. Small art gallery upstairs and live music Saturday evenings. Great prices, nice assortment of all kids of books. Great people, a very international group of people- go on a Saturday night, listen to some music, buy some books and enjoy interesting and stimulating conversation. They also have lectures on a variety of topics from science to Shakespeare. Check out their Facebook page for events. *please note there is a comment about cat hair in the bookstore, but there is no cat there, nor have I ever noticed cat hair there.

Century Books and I dig it. Its basically floor mini library, with used books from floor to ceiling (well almost). I say floors because theres a tree house like half level in between the ground and top floor. Their books are divided by subject and theres so many of them, that youll need to use the map by the stairway to navigate your way around.

Its a great place for low prices on great books, but what really sold me on this place were the awesome store owners who were one of the friendliest couple I have ever met. Their passion for books is really nice.
